Pemex to replace pumps

IN BRIEF

El Universal
September 19, 2006

State oil company Pemex and state development bank Nafin signed an agreement Monday to facilitate loans for service station operators to renew their equipment.
The program, for which Nafin will provide loan guarantees, is aimed at solving the widespread problem of motorists being given less fuel than they pay for. There have also been problems of gas stations selling stolen or adulterated fuel.

The US$160 million program aims to finance the replacement of 60 percent of the 34,000 fuel pumps in the country, which cost around US$8,000 each, within two years, according to an announcement by Petroleos Mexicanos, or Pemex.

Mexico has around 7,200 service stations, all of which are Pemex franchises.

The station owners are the ones that are forced to pay, not Pemex! Hope they have a second business like Baja Cactus to help, otherwise some new way will be figured to make the books balance, you think?
