While the trip report was posted last June, all the attached photos are (temp.) gone because Doug had to change servers... That inspired me to make a new web page for the trip photos, and includes more than was posted on Nomad.

So here is Baja Angel and my weekend (June 18th, 2006) on Shell Island, eating at the two restaurants in Ejido Delicias, and a trip up Arroyo Matomi:

It is an interesting question why I enjoy (need to) share my love of Baja... In a way, all us Nomads do when we post here... I actually had two very slow days, work wise, so it was something to do!

Baja is my hobby (obsession?) and if it wasn't for the Internet to release my energy, I would need to be writing books and articles, again.

That still is a desire: a new Baja California Guidebook... compile all my trip notes and photos into something one can grab and go... The great places in Baja that are examples of cool geology and history!

Until then, Baja Nomad will do just fine! I still need a publisher for Choral Pepper's final Baja book 'BAJA: Mysteries, Missions, Myths'. Here's the web page I made to show some of the photos Choral gave me: http://choralpepper.com

Wow, not much water over the falls at Matomi... and the pool is so shallow from what I remember when Georock took the plunge. Where is Ejido Delicias? In other words, how do you find those two resturants? How was the food? I see Fanta and CocaCola. Where was the beer? lol

Yah, that was fun (for Georock)!

Yes, the waterfall was a trickle... the least I had ever seen, in fact. The pool was still very deep... Angel and I went for a swim and when I stood on the bottom, the surface was still a foot or two above me.

Ejido Delicias (or Poblado Delicias) is the little town at Km. 35, (1.8 miles south of the turnoff to Nuevo Mazatlan). It has a fire dept., police station, doctor's office (next door to Chelo's) and the two restaurants plus at least one other frequented by the new gringo population in the 'South Campos' (Bahia Santa Maria to Coloradito, etc.).

Poblado Delicias is in the middle of Ejido Delicias half way to Puertecitos, and about 25 miles South of San Felipe.

There are only 2 restaurants now -- Chelo's and Marino's (Chelo's former cook). They are both open Fridays and Saturdays for brealfast. lunch and dinner, and Sundays for breakfast, although Chelo's is the busiest for great, big Sunday breakfasts. Marino's (Marina is her name) is also open Wed. nights - Mexican nights.

Food is excellent - Mexican and American menus. Steak, Shrimp, Mexican food, etc. If you don't see it on the menu, ask, they'll make it for you, if they have the ingredients. More English spoken at Chelo's, which is on the Highway. Marino's is down the same street on the right.

Neither has liquor -- but no objections if you want to bring your own wine, c-cktails or beer -- just buy your soft drinks there, of course.

There's a small Mini Market, which serves food out front, as well as a trailer serving Mariscos out front, just a little South of Chelo's. There's a larger Market which sells beer, abut 2 blocks from the highway on the right -- look for the large Tecate sign.

We met Baja Nomad 'El Vergel' over New Years (guess where he has a place? LOL).

I noticed that a sign for 'Marino's' was at the street... but the big sign above the restaurant said Marina's!?! Kind of like Santa Ynez & Santa Ines... it really doesn't matter that much to them!

Is there a Marino and a Marina (husband and wife) at the same place?:wow:

Has Isabela's Restaurant closed? It is just north of the Professor's mini mart.

"Marino's" is owned solely by "Marina". There never was a "Marino", just a helpful Gringo who had signs made for her, but may have provided incorrect info to the sign painter. It does matter to her, but no one has ever changed them to this point, probably because of cost.

We're in Campo Cielito Lindo, KM40 -- drive to San Felipe daily -- retirees who un-retired!!!

While Isabela's sign is still up, it is my understanding they were only going to run the Mini Mart this year, but am not positive. We'll know for sure when restaurants open on the 6th. I believe she is still teaching in San Felipe and I'm sure it's difficult to make the drive every day and try and run a restaurant on weekends. Check it out next week!

It would appear it was changed before June 18th, but you can make out the o to a alteration!...

They changed the one on the restaurant, but the one on the road still has the "O" -- but we all know who "she" is.
