I'm happy to announce that that rather washboardy 40 km into Bahia Asuncion has JUST been graded yesterday. So it's a great time to visit and not trash your vehicle. Weather is superb and the water is balmy, calm and very clear...perfect for diving or fishing...sucks for surfers this week though. Lots of lobster around and everybody is in a good mood cause lobster season started so pesos will be flowing again. Hasta pronto amigos...
In case you are wondering, this is the mystery sign that announces Bahia Asuncion...no wonder nobody ever finds us!

Shari. Thanks for the update on your sign. Where exactly is it located. On Hwy 1???? Or approaching 'town'? By the time we get to your place, the road will probably be ready for another "scrape" I'm sure. We should be arriving sometime around the 22nd or 23rd of October. I've got to check out your "mystery cave"!!!!!!!!! I"ve hunted all over the world wide internet, and find nada regarding the railroad tracks running out of "your cave"??????

Yes, the mystery cave is indeed a mystery. There used to be a guano industry there and my husbands grandfather was the caretaker of the island. He said nobody knew when or why they were laid and they go real deep!!! We look forward to seeing you Phil on the 22nd or 23rd...will you be camping?You are right about the road...it's really good for about 5 days and after a week or 10 days, it's rough again then declined rapidly after that. But it sure is awesome the few days after it's graded!!

The mystery sign is after you turn off the paved road from Vizcaino, it's hilarious and unreadable...thought you nomads might like it. I should have done one of those "Where is this" contests...

For Captain Mike...as far as I know the pista is in great shape as always..we were out there a few days ago and heard a plane today too so I assume it's fine...don't know when the medicos are coming again...they only come once or twice a year...wish they'd bring a vet to fix some of the critters here.

So, nasty depends on what you think is nasty and what you are driving. You can air down to 25, which is what we drive it at and then drive about 50 mph to float over the rough washboard spots...there aren't any big holes or anything to worry about but every once in awhile there will be a big surprise on the road, like a big rock someone left behind (which is why there are big signs saying DON'T LEAVE ROCKS ON THE ROAD) or maybe some bricks or wood that fell off someones pick up, or a cow etc. But it's quite good except for the washboardy spots which make it miserable for trailers and big campers...slow seems to shake the living sh't out of ya...fast and furious is mo better and more fun...there are only a few curves and dips which is fun to get air on and float around. It's not as bad as other roads but worse than some....so ya just have to do it and decide. But letting the air out of your tires is the KEY which most gringos just won't do..I can't figure out why when we always tell them it is the best...they just don't listne and end up blowing out those nice expensive new tires...we have crappy used tires and rarely get a flat!! Sometimes just after grading you can get a flat as the machine flips up some real sharp rocks. So although a little rough, most people don't mind when they see the gold at the end of the roadbow...

We are doing a little planning for our departure in early January and hoped you could answer a few questions. We will be driving an F350 4x4 and towing a 22' high-clearance camp trailer. Looks like we'll get to you around Jan. 12 or 13.

1. About how long to drive from the highway to you ?
2. About how long to drive from the highway to Abreojos ?
3. Could I make the drive through Hippolito from you to Abreojos with
this rig and if so, how long a drive.
4. What's available for camper parking in either location ? No services needed; just a beach.
5. Diesel availability in both towns ?
6. How much to hire your wonderful daughter for horseback riding lessons with my 11 year old and anything she can think of with my 5 year old ?? :lol:

Maybe a surfing session with my wife ?
7. Your little perro's wont beat up on my two 90-100 lb yellow labs, will they ? :lol:

8. I'll try to reactivate the telcel phone. Do you guys have service out there ? If so, u2 me phone number and we'll check in from GN to see if you need anything.

10. Any place to launch the 14' boat off the car topper ?

Shari, If the Medico team had room, and could pick up two vets in TJ, we can get them there. Would take some planning and so on. I think we could work this on out. I and another vet can leave early and bring down the tables and all we need for supplys and so on. A few of these Vets do quick spay and do so many dogs and cats in a day, its just fantastic. Lets see if we can work this out, to help the Critters in your area. Cindi

Hey diver , don't want to rain on the Asuncion parade here but I think you need to hear the other side of the coin a little.
That road can be a mother . I literally destroyed a trailer (24')towing it out there a few years back. It was set up with good suspension , the right tires and aired down and when all was said and done it was basically a throw away .

Plan on taking a more than average time to get there and you hopefully will fair better than me. If your rig is older and you don't care, air down and go for it and don't look back . If its newer , especially with a tandem axle, be prepared to spend the extra time driving slow ( like creeping over the washboard) in order to preserve it.

Also , looks like you are most likely already set up for the Northwest so I'll assume you have a good thick wetsuit. You'll probably need it as the water temps in Asuncion can be miserably cold at times even in the summer. ( I haven't been there in January) Take warm clothes an jackets , youll need them too.

Hey Bajalero, go ahead and rain on our parade, we could use the precipitation! I guess alot depends on what you think is cold...some don't want to go in the water unless it's over 80. Most summers the water is over 70 degrees which is lovely and refreshing, this summer it was 75 degrees and still over 70. The road is much better now than it was "a few years ago" and much depends on when it was graded...you get lots of different opinions. There are some rough spots but most of it is fine. It's true, hauling a big trailer is not for the faint of heart(which is why there aren't many gringos here or RV"S) but some folks do it and make it fine. We get LOTS of truck campers in and they always come back!
Now to answer some questions...there is usually deisel here but it can run out so best to fill up in Vizcaino. More deisel available during yachting season Nov.-June. There are lots of places to camp for free.
Your kids and dogs will love the beaches, animals, tide pools etc....you can camp here at the blowhole and use our bathroom and shower or at the beach in San Roque and use our outhouse which has a tiolet in it!! Lots of friends stay here a couple days and then go to San roque too. It is cool in January at night so bring fleecies. There are several places to launch your boat no problem.
The road has been paved from the highway into Abreojos but the dirt road from there to here along the coast can be nasty...more washboard and longer than if you come in from Vizcaino. I only take that Abreojos-Asuncion coast road if it has been graded recently. The road from Vizcaino is paved up to the Asuncion cut off so only about 40 km of dirt and only some rough washboard spots...in a truck you can drive it in a half hour...at a crawl with a trailer and bad conditions it'll take you a couple hours. So make sure you have some beer and crank up the tunes and maybe watch a movie!
Our phone # is 160-0289 and we stand by on channel 16 on the VHF, it's good to call us from Vizcaino, the store across the street from the gas station has a little phone booth in it and it's a local call so we can come and help you if you get stuck(there are a couple sandy spots you have to keep your speed up in) or something breaks. Ya gotta love those baja adventures.
Another option is coming in with your car to check it out first and staying at the beach house and leave your rig in Vizcaino at the trailer park.
Anyway, just to make sure we're clear....the road isn't pleasant for trailers, lots of rattling.... but it is do-able.
WE love to trade for horse riding etc. and have a little
need" list like, dog & cat food, olive oil, soy sauce, sushi rice, wasabi, etc.
Let us know what you decide...best case scenario is coming in when the road gets graded they it's a piece of cake. I will be posting every time that happens to let folks know.

Cristobal....my husband is also an Arce and knows Chamala but he isn't 70 years old??? We'll tell him you said hola. Oh and lobsters can't be sold on the beach here...very big no no..but you can buy them at the co-op for about $10 lobster....already cooked and frozen.

SEMANA SANTA one year I made the mistake of asking him why the name on the side of his truck was different than SANTIAGO and LUPE and TOMAS ans MARIA and ANDREA and PINA and ANTONIO and ... :wow:

I embarassed him because their mother is FRANCISCO'S wife MARUCA ... of some ... 70 years ...
MARUCA summed things up when she said ...

Relief came over his face when she said that ...

ahemmmmm...hey it's me again and to your Q' i can think of tons of things to do with both your kids and i can take them riding and all that...surfing would be great!!! and about the rates...i'll have to see the kids first...hehe...i have handled some monsters and i'm pretty sure your kids are adorable and sweet...i hope...jokin'!!!!!
there are also lots of little kids in asuncion that love to play basketball and other sports or what ever your daughter likes to do we can find it!!! just let me know when you are coming to make sure not to make plans for the weekend!!
