How many surfers on this board?

Lee - 10-6-2006 at 04:20 PM

I don't think disclosing breaks is a big deal here since they're all known.

I can see La Pastora from my land and with binocs, the surfers. Guess that'll be my home break. First time I surfed there, I came away thinking I was going to buy a helmet. (Pastora is an expert break and injuries will happen if you don't know what you're doing!)

Otherwise, San Pedrito is fun and I've had some gnarly hold down's there. Then there's the rip....

Even love Old Man's (Aquapulquitos). And enjoy the crowds. I know that's weird.

:lol::O

Bajamatic - 10-6-2006 at 04:34 PM

uh oh. this is sure to be the hang out for all the Stoners and, as Berndog so eloquently put it,

Surfers on the board (no pun intended!)...

Cameron - 10-6-2006 at 04:57 PM

There's lots of us here! I spent all of 2004 living @ San Pedrito myself, and I love Pastora, but it's hard to justify driving all the way up to town and through the Otro Ladro to get there when I could surf right in front of the house.
Are you Lee the Author? No last names needed, just curious!
Cameron

Pastora!

bigzaggin - 10-6-2006 at 05:10 PM

such a fun wave! I led a group of guys down there last year - 6 of my close friends from Brasil - we had so much fun! It was head high to a few feet overhead, fun, clean barrels, and the locals were some of the nicest, most considerate, welcoming people I have ever met in Baja. Even the older guys. Seriously, it was almost EERIE how nice they were (and some say the local ex-pats are nasty...I didn't see it). I have a few secrets down that way (don't we all!) but I'm always quick to point travellers towards Pastora for a clean tube and a big smile.

Say hi to the place for me! I'll be back in Jan (my wife teaches ESL in Japan and we are bringing down 10 kids from the beaches outside Tokyo).

The name is not Berndog. You are great at the selective quotes--is that a ******* problem with you or can it be corrected?

Cameron-- always has been a lot of surfers in Baja and on this board. That is one of the reasons we invited Mike Parise to our last two Baja Authors book signing at the Pyrimad Resort.
Not being a surfer that is where I first heard about udder balm.

Yo, Bro --

Sure I've seen you in the lineup. Stayed at Cyril's in Pescadero Winter of '04-'05. Not sure what author you mean. I am an unpublished author working on a book.

Where do you stay Cameron? Do you know Bob Costa? Tomas? Gary? The Crew?

Saturday a.m., everyone out, sunny, friendly, warm, big.

See you in the water.

Oh yeah Pastora

Yeah I've seen nasty or uptight ex-pats but think they're more territorial than the locals. Just know the Rules and it helps to know how to surf. Like I said, Pastora is NOT for beginners. I've seen it gnarly there.

My experience of surfing down that way is that it's mellow and everyone is happy and stoked.

See you in January. I'll be there. Look for Colorado license plates.

Did you happen to know a guy named JR he lived there and surfed in front of his home as well as along the entire coast.

Apodo. Mine is related, at least phonetically, to my real name, but I've certainly been called worse, and there have been some I didn't appreciate.

Bernie,
I really don't think "the new kid" meant disrespect, but it's your call as to how you wish to be addressed. At least away from off-topic.

cat127 - 10-6-2006 at 07:11 PM

You guys know dumptruck Jim from the Big Island who surfs scorpian bay (among other places?)

Not as much as I used to

bajadogs - 10-6-2006 at 07:31 PM

In my younger years (I'm 39) I never thought about it as excercise and my buddies and I would spend all day around K38. Now, on my longboard when there's a swell, my arms turn in to limp noodles just getting past the breakers. I still love the ocean and my daughter (9) digs surfing. We're close to the beach in Carlsbad. We spend more time underwater on the Cortez side of the penninsula on our Baja trips.

Al G - 10-6-2006 at 07:47 PM

I agree. but....The young will alway find something to waste their time on. I think surfing is a better way to waste time.
At least compared to Video games. I did waste many years racing nascar. I think surfing is better exercise, But fishing is the Bomb......

Yes! Udder balm

Baja Bernie - 10-6-2006 at 08:19 PM

Originally con-c-cked for the cows so their udders would not crack and bleed--made them soft and supple--or that is what I have been told by some old surfers.

JESSE - 10-7-2006 at 08:32 AM

Been doing it since i was 13th, but i havent surfed in a little over a year, i do miss it.

Bringing 10 of your friends???

Not cool. Sorry. Cameron

Hey Lee! RE: San P.

Cameron - 10-7-2006 at 11:45 AM

"..Where do you stay Cameron? Do you know Bob Costa? Tomas? Gary? The Crew?.."

I lived about 100 meters from where you were, at "Casa Loco"/the Cabo Extreme house with Jimmy & Adam. I'm pretty sure we've met a few times. I've got a buzz cut/shaved head and goatee, drive the big white '77 F250, and my dog Nemo comes over to Cyril's all the time. Of course I know Bob & his family, Tomas, Gary, and all the other neighbors as well. See you this winter!

Now I remember. You're one of the crazies

Only kidding. Sorta. Nothing wrong with Casa Loco. Didn't sleep the last Raegae Night at SP. Think the Extreme crowd kept it going till 6am? (I wandered down the road in my underwear and saw the bonfire going at your place.....)

What a group! Glad you're around, Bro.

See ya in the water.

Gadget - 10-7-2006 at 09:08 PM

My wife and I spent a month on our honey moon camping on the beach at Costa Azul and Los Cerritos in 1980. Too many Baja adventures and miss- adventures to remember. Over 150 waypoints on my GPS, maybe a 1/3 of them tracks to the surf. Would like to retire in Todos Santos. Wife is a Baja veteran but I have a whole different perspective on taking a good woman to live out of country and have it all blown away, after a trip down to help out in Mulege. We met some wives down there that looked like they wanted to pack it in. We think Baja has the greatest surf in the world, at any spot we're at, regardless of conditions. It's Baja and everywhere else isn't. Best barrel in Baja...Three Prongs on a 5 to 7 ft 180 degree south. Best hotdog wave anytime...Bus Stops

Started surfing in 1960

Sonora Wind - 10-16-2006 at 04:09 PM

Part of the Ray Bay scene at Seal Beach. On to Bosa Chica and then the Pier at Huntington Beach. When we could drive, Cardiff Reef and Becons was the place. First trip to Baja was 1966. Spent a week and made it as far as La Fondas. Stopped surfing in 1970 when I moved to Vegas and became a Bombaro. Started again in 1985. Goofy foots rule.

those are strong roots SP

Do any of you Seal Beach area dinosaurs remember a guy named Rory Hammer ?

The Sculpin - 10-17-2006 at 10:52 AM

There can not possibly be this many surfers on this board. True surfers never admit they're surfers, nor do they talk about surfing or surf spots. True surfers huddle away from others at the Pemex station for fear someone might follow them to their spot. True surfers lurk in the corner of the loncheria and speak in hushed tones lest someone be evesdropping. True surfers alter the direction signs at turnoffs. True surfers never admit to understanding GPS. True surfers brush away their tire tracks on dirt roads. And inspite of all these efforts, if by chance you ever stumble onto a true surfers secret spot and ask him how it's been, he'll tell you....

You should have been here yesterday!!!!!!!

Summanus - 10-17-2006 at 11:15 AM

Another name recall?

We remember meeting a surfer chap at Posada Concepcion just south of Mulege many years ago. He had a place there...then mostly trailers and palapa roofs. We had met him on the road coming south. His name was Micky something. We recall he was supposed to be some sort of a famous surfer...or was in a surfing business maybe. We know nothing about the sport..except that he gave us a list of his Baja surfing beaches which we have somewhere. We have never heard of most of this beaches and we have visited of Baja much over the years. Maybe someone else can recall this person and his history in surfing?

p.s. a slight clearing fog in the memory banks....his last name may have been Doyle or Boyle.

[Edited on 10-17-2006 by Summanus]

Micky Dora

Sonora Wind - 10-17-2006 at 12:35 PM

The Cat. The good die young. He passed many years ago.

Summanus - 10-17-2006 at 12:47 PM

Thank you, Sonora Wind. Micky Dora. We regret to hear of his passing. May his spirit ride on a .... hang-five?

The Sculpin - 10-17-2006 at 12:57 PM

Sonora Wind knows not of what he speaks....his words are like the wind...fleeting, ephemeral, and difficult to grasp....alas, for it was not Dora. Dora hung out in Europe and Africa..never baja. It was Doyle, grasshopper. He is a long time baja resident, and his aunt used to live out on the point on Concepcion before she, well, that's another story.....

Summanus - 10-17-2006 at 01:08 PM

Ah-so, Sculpin, you master, us grasshopper..you have been kind to clear this up. At about that time in our Baja travels, we also met a solo gringa who lived at Conception Point on a ranchero. Perhaps she was Mr. Doyle's aunt, but I doubt she was a surfer, though. She loved horses, I believe, and horsemen.

The Sculpin - 10-17-2006 at 01:13 PM

Well, if she were a lover of horsemen, am I to assume that you are a horseman, and perhaps the object of her desire?

Sorry

Sonora Wind - 10-17-2006 at 07:45 PM

I was thinking of Micky Dora, Not Mike Doyle. Different dudes:cool: Note to self: The first FU you've made today Sonora Wind. Micky still died to young. Thanks for the correct info Sculpin.

Not at all short lived:cool:

Scuplin two questions

Sonora Wind - 10-18-2006 at 06:43 PM

1. Did I get the name Mike Doyle correct. Or was his name Micky Doyle? Many years have fogged the few cells left in the recall part of my menory.

2. Would you expound on the horse lady. Sounds like a wonderful story.

[Edited on 10-19-2006 by Sonora Wind]

The Sculpin - 10-19-2006 at 08:46 AM

1. Yes see : http://www.legendarysurfers.com/surf/legends/lsc220_doyle.ht...

2. No

Thanks for the come back

Sonora Wind - 10-19-2006 at 05:14 PM

But the horse Lady sounds more intreging. When both Doyle and Dora were at their zenth, I was far from the coast and not very connected to the sport. I'm back in So Cal and surf every chance possiable. Again thanks for the correct info. A beer or several in the cooler has you name on it, should we ever meet.

If I may....

Since you posted here and named your home break on your profile, I guess you've broken 2 of your own rules. Talking in hushed tones and brushing away tire tracks. Come on bro, you've watched too many spy movies.
