BOLA camping options?

Janice - 10-10-2006 at 12:39 PM

We are planning our annual trip to Baja around Thanksgiving. We have always enjoyed staying at Gecko, but now that it's no longer an option, we are wondering if anyone has suggestions. We have recently acquired a 2 wheel drive pick up truck and are shopping for an older cab-over camper, preferably self-contained. If we don't end up with one, we will likely be taking our trusty 4 wheel drive toyota van.

So.... where would be a good option for us? We may have all the facilities we need, we may not, but in either case, we will likely have another vehicle or two traveling with us that will not have showers etc...so would like a place with those comforts nearby for those folks. Showers are not absolutely neccesary.

Any and all suggestions appreciated!

I'm not sure I should give away our secret spot or not but it's sooo nice there and sounds perfect for you. We always camp out at the end of the spit in the dunes area...past Gecko and kind of bear left and drive past a bunch of houses out to where there is a small inlet. It's great to pitch a tent out of the wind there and nice kayaking...hung out with a juvenile sperm whale there once in front of our campsite and is nice to paddle over to that village on the other side there. It's kinda far from town so you need to stock up on beer. Also be careful of the manta ray there while swimming, I suggest swimming out in deep water and not touching bottom!

Thanks for the hot tip Shari! I seem to remember seeing some people camped in the dunes just south of Gecko. How far from Gecko would it be? Is there anyone else in the area to rent kayaks from now that Doc is no longer in business?

Thanks Von! Daggetts sounds like a possibility too. We are at a loss without Gecko, it's the only place we ever stayed.

Our campsite was about 3 miles from Ghecko and the little town across the way is El Rincon.

I second the choice for Dagget's. It's about a mile in on the road to La Gringas. Haven't been in a couple of years but I hear the road is now paved up to it.

Decent (Baja stds) restrooms and showers, 3-sided palapas to protect from wind, on the water.

What about Archelon? Next to the turtle place?
