Once a month, a group of volunteers from San Diego travels south of the border. Members of the Give Some Life Foundation have donated countless hours to help control Baja’s pet population by spaying and neutering dogs and cats, at no cost to the pet’s owner.

Mary Savoia and Barb Dunsmore volunteer with a grass roots organization that spays and neuters dogs and cats south of the border.

The two women have a lot in common – they love their dogs, which they both rescued. In fact, they met when they were animal rescue volunteers after Hurricane Katrina. They discovered they lived just blocks away from each other in Pacific Beach.

Their dedication to saving animals brought them together again, this time as volunteers with the Give Some Life Foundation.

“People don't realize we have a Katrina situation in our own backyard in Tijuana. There are animals everywhere, not always healthy or well cared for,” Dunsmore said.

On a recent weekend, more than 100 dogs and cats were spayed or neutered – all breeds and all sizes – no animal was turned away.

“The whole purpose is to decrease the homeless pet population,” Dunsmore said. “We go down, it's just a long day once a month.”

South of the border, stray dogs and cats are a big problem, but Baja California doesn’t have a comprehensive sterilization program, and spaying and neutering animals isn’t a priority. But Dunsmore is passionate about the procedure to reduce the pet population.

“It's a huge problem, it's a huge problem everywhere, but it's the only answer. The animals are being executed and gassed,” she said.

That’s why groups like Give Some Life Foundation and others go south of the border to save animals. In the past five years, Give Some Life has spayed or neutered 3,500 animals in Baja California.

Volunteers come to Tijuana the first Sunday of each month.
