Cielito Lindo

Janice - 10-10-2006 at 08:37 PM

Does anyone have anything to report about the conditions here, have they improved since last year? We were down last year and the facillities were in disrepair...no hot water, unkempt, etc.
The margaritas and jaiba were still good though!

Been there... I was looking for current, first-hand reports on camping and motel conditons.

David K - 10-10-2006 at 08:52 PM

Drive 30 miles further and stay at Baja Cactus, in El Rosario!

If you are hanging out in San Quintin and want to be on/ near the water, then the Old Mill on the bay (Molino Viejo) always gets good reviews... Even the pricy La Pinta, next door to Cielito Lindo get good marks compared to Cielito Lindo motel... a FIFTY'S motel for the 00'S!

Stayed there last in 2002... dirty floor, ant trail in bathroom, yech!

Janice - 10-10-2006 at 09:05 PM

Just looking for a first nights stay...and this is about as far as we usually go the first night. We have eaten at the Old Mill, but never stayed there. El Rosario could be an option if we can make the extra mileage before dark.

Word!
And most gracious, David
It' the Cactus for me!

marv sherrill - 10-10-2006 at 10:08 PM

forget cielito lindo- I agree with David - stay at the old mill or brave the extra 40 miles to baja cactus - far better accomodations and resturant facilities

capt. mike - 10-11-2006 at 05:12 AM

CL is a dump......... LP is a twilight zone episode mixed with The Shining..........
never stayed at baja Cactus, its probably good but el rosario is a somewhat gloomy place as far as i am concerned, weather there sucks, cloudy etc. stay there a nite and BE GONE!

aha baja - 10-11-2006 at 05:28 AM

Baja Cactus is new, very clean and LESS $ than CL. CL has a more partyISH cantina mode but run down,in need of serious maintenace it's like out of the '50s:.... for my family and I would push to El Rosario the extra 30 min. get some breakfast @ Mamas then roll on to Bahia and parts beyond:yes:

It is a rare day to not have the sun shining Mike... The 5,000' concrete runway on the mesa (Diamante del Mar) should also please you! Being 4 linear miles from the ocean does keep it out of the coast hugging gloom that San Quintin gets.

In the past 24 months, I have stayed in El Rosario close to 15 times throughout the year, so I base my weather (wx) observations on that.

Speaking of weird places to stay... out of Alfred Hitchc-ck, how about the Old Pier (Muelle Viejo) Motel on the bay... near the cemetery???

PS: lots of good eating places... not just Mama Espinoza's, to choose from!

dean miller - 10-11-2006 at 07:37 AM

Ceilito Linda:

It has been on a downward slope for a number of years.
The crab claws; best menu item, but they also need attention
The bar is very LOUD and crowded
Dogs are always in the bar & eating area---fleas! and more fleas!
Last ( and I do mean last) No electricy, no hot water, camp area dirty
The road to CL has inproved

Beach Camping (different owner):

Sandy but has showers & flushers that work
Can be cold windy & sandy
Same price as CL (10.00 US???)

The Wet Buzzard bar:

Laura prepares a great Breakfast burrito-$1.00-any "flavor"
Great view
Local coffee hang out--good gossip! (who, what ,when were, & how??)
She has a new nino--bring a toy for him.

El Papellon:
Beach camping
Has a very fine clinging type sand beach
Can be aproblem with blowing sand
NOT CROWDED--except on long holidays-Urg! ATV & bikes!
Cleanest best and warmest showers in Baja.
( the owner welcomes receiving American baseball caps!)
Bonus--enjoy the surf launching of the pangas
Our favorite

La Pinta Hotel
Great view
Great beach
Fair food & beverage
Cars park in front--poor security
Reasonable price

Baja Cactus;

Never over nighted there-viewed from Highway
If you can see it from highway it will probably be subject to noise
Unnown quality, quanity & Price

Generally Santa Maria area terminal destination for winter months.
...28 miles possibly in the dark...No way!
Enjoy and post a report on your return,

dm

Janice - 10-11-2006 at 08:07 AM

David, Chino, Marv, Capt. Mike, Aha, Dean: Thanks for your replies and for confirming what we have suspected to be true. Too bad... it was a fun place to stay years ago. I have heard there are new owners now; this would explain the "downward slope".

I do agree that Gypsy's is the place to go for breakfast. Laura is a most gracious hostess and makes the best burritos. We even went there for fish tacos one night. Fresh as can be, made to order. Yum!

Soulpatch, thanks for reminding us of El Pabellon. We stayed there once and remember it to be a little windy, but the showers were great! Since it's only one night, we may stay there, if not on the way down, possibly for the return trip.

Thanks again everyone for your valuable input.

wilderone - 10-11-2006 at 08:15 AM

El Paballon is just 3 miles further - only $5. Cielito Lindo wants $10 now. Great beach frontage with privacy foliage. You'll pass a restaurant en route - don't know how it is, but would be convenient if you want to dine out. They have hot saltwater showers.

vandenberg - 10-11-2006 at 08:16 AM

Press on to El Rosario and you won't be disappointed. Great rooms, better then most good american motels for a third of the price.
Viva BAJA CACTUS, best value on the peninsula.:yes::yes:

capt. mike - 10-11-2006 at 09:25 AM

ok, i'll take a diff note on the WX at el rosario, but to be honest the place just does nada for me, i'd only pass thru, it seems like a trucker town to me.

the strip on the bluff is private and the snooty developers do not like company w/o prior permission - far too many places to go that are pilot friendly and you don't have to walk far. i'll pass - give me the SOC side anyway, anytime.

to be fair, i only drove it once and have no intention of driving again. unless i am on a bike. but hey, everyone does what they like, freedom of choice rules. i have time to spare ................so i go by air!

Baja&Back - 10-11-2006 at 09:41 AM

If you're in an RV and want to camp on the beach at El Pabellon, try the site several blocks farther south, Palapas Alvinos. They are just at the end of the Santa Marta school compound & have a beeeg sign. Flat camping area with a view, FRESH water showers, water taps & a domp. Fidel is one of the nicest, friendliest guys in Baja!

Al G - 10-11-2006 at 10:16 AM

I want to stay at El Papellon. Do they have a dump station or is there one in the area. I will stop at Baja Cactus, in El Rosario for 90 gal. of fuel. Is there a dump there?
I will not drive much over 200 miles a day so I need another stop around Rosarito, before going to Bahia Asunci'on.
How is the Pemex in Vizcano?

osoflojo - 10-11-2006 at 11:47 AM

Al, the Pemex in Vizcaino is good but almost always crowded. The new ones in GN by the aguila or Jesus Maria may be options if wait time is an issue.

Martyman - 10-11-2006 at 01:44 PM

Cielito Lindo is awesome! Fleas, dirty floors, good margaritas and greasy crab! That is what I come to Mexico for. Have we all turned into a bunch of namby-bamby goody two-shoes? C'mon folks, since when do I have to start smelling good in Baja? Wow! I thought you people were my brothers and sisters but all these replies reflectl a bunch of snivelling babies!!

Thanks osoflojo...Wait time is less of an issue then Pump accuracy. At 70 to 90 of fuel at a time could hurt a lot.

El Rosario area has so much to offer... Go to my web sites and see for yourselves It isn't just for a quick stop... it is a destination. Baja Angel and I like it so much, we want to be there all the time... We love four wheeling, exploring, beaches, great food, fossil hunting, fishing, photograhing the desert... all things El Rosario has to offer!

Capt. Mike, anytime you want to land at Diamante del Mar, I can connect you with the people to okay that. Flying Sams use it...

capt. mike - 10-11-2006 at 04:51 PM

Martyman...........frankly there is a lot of merit in what you say! CL is a tired dump and i wouldn't go there now 'cause the new strip and development of Larry's is close by the old mill. google Lorenzo, i forgot his website, oh- wait, its campolorenzo.com i theeeeeenk.

but i kill to go to PSFO and it is as primitive as you can get!

when Dave and Juanita ran CL it was more fun tho.

Oso - 10-11-2006 at 06:18 PM

What, no CL defenders? A few years ago I was practically skinned alive for calling it Cielito Feo. Friends of the former owners came out of the woodwork in their defense, berating me for a negative review and touting their crab legs and margaritas and what wonderful people they were (although no one said much about the rooms). I never met the former owners but I'll concede that they may be very nice people. I wish I could still eat crab, loved it when I was younger but sadly I'm allergic now so I can't comment. I've heard the margs described as "killer" by some, perhaps in reference to strength and size, but low in brand quality by others. Again, I'll concede because although I'm a gringo, I tend to adopt the Mexican Male's preference for straight tequila and relegation of margaritas to women and well... Also, I remember conceding that the camping fee ($5 back then) seemed quite reasonable. But, as I said then and see no contradiction now, the rooms were Skid Row Flophouse quality at a Holiday Inn price. Musty, grungy and furnished with pieces rejected by Goodwill Industries. This is not due to a change in ownership, the long slide into dilapidation began long ago. I can only guess that no one had the capital to make improvements. I've slept on sidewalks and grew up with outhouses. I'm no snob, and I could have just made do at $20, but $45 was a rip then and apparently a rip now. It's really a pity that no one has stepped in and invested what it would take to make pleasant accomodations. It is a good location if you like a Pismo like beach, clams, cool fog etc.

I would appreciate it if you would spread this around.

Very, VERY well.

El Rosario used to be a stop for gas for me and onward - one way or the other.

I have an overdue trip report from a Labor Day trip. I didn't want to post anything around the Mulege disaster - and haven't gotten back around to it.

We ventured out to Punta Baja one day, and up to Cielito Lindo another for some crab. It is only about 28 miles or so as previously noted.

I found it to be a great getaway south of Ensenada for an extended weekend.

And the coast along here at places is outstanding.

Oh... look for the trip report... new lobster restaurant along the coast is set to open.... and I don't know how they'll make it... but you'll want to go, if only for the view.

Paula - 10-11-2006 at 09:09 PM

If you have to stay in San Quintin the Old Mill is just fine, reasonably priced (400 pesos?) and Jardines restaurant nearby is good. Baja Cactus is a better motel if you can drive the extra miles. Mama Espinosa's is good.
Cielito Lindo is pretty awful. We've stayed there several times, and I just can't make myself like it-- the rooms are gross. The cracked crab dinner there is OK, and if you end up there on rodeo weekend there the norteno dancing in the bar is truly amazing:tumble:

well hell Dave, if i'da known you had a lot

capt. mike - 10-12-2006 at 04:13 AM

there i'd stopped by. What happened to the pista that we discussed U2U? hope it's on wherever.:bounce:

july 4th weekend i tried the made up by locals "approach" to El Socorrito but waived myself off when i lost viz in the haze on about a one mile final:?:, we were at 300' and as i hit a thick cloud bank we decided to head north where i could see a better hole - and my esposa was about to kill me:mad:, if i didn't kill us 1st, for such running of the scud:no:......,my buddy in his 210 had flown the same "approach" just 5 minutes earlier and got in ok, but he used to have a home there and knew the area intimately - anyway we headed to CL and it was clear so i landed and we taxied over to the bar and had a few (she vodka, me pepsi!) :biggrin:with Dave who stopped by after recognizing my plane and voice on the radio.

less than an hour later we went on over to El Socorrito.

great place that is.

BajaWarrior - 10-12-2006 at 03:29 PM

Posted in the bar was story, maybe a newspaper article of how Juanita bought the whole property from someone (don't know who, whole point of this) and how Cielito Lindo was built as a hideaway for movie stars back in the 40's. Back then the paved road ended in Colonet, thus making it difficult for the media to get through to pester the Hollywood Elite.

Anyone else read that paper on the right side of the bar?

Does Juanita still have it?

Does anyone have any history on CL?

Haven't been there in a long time...

Don Alley - 10-12-2006 at 06:54 PM

I like Celito Lindo.

Yeah, it is kind of a dump, nowhere near as nice as Baja Cactus. But I don't have to drive to Baja for a nice motel; there may be one or two in Idaho.

There is a wonderful stretch of beach at CL, one that I still have to fish for the big surf perch there. It's a nice, quiet place in contrast with the territory around the highway there.

Oso - 10-12-2006 at 07:03 PM

To be clear about this, I might yet consider camping there again in my own rig. I just will not rent a room until someone invests the capital to make the accomodations acceptable.

Al G - 10-12-2006 at 07:09 PM

Sounds like a happening place..Ran by real party-ers. May not stay or eat there(if the rooms are a mess I can only imagine what the kitchen is like.) Sometime you just need a place to party-hearty.:light::cool:

Baja Cactus is the place...

Mexray - 10-12-2006 at 08:28 PM

...if you want, new, clean, comfortable rooms, been there done that several times....it's the greatest!

However, my only problem has been with the lighting in those dark rooms...BEWARE, if you check into your room after dark your 1st time, take a flashlight with you, the decor is so dark, and the lighting minimal, that you might miss the step-down into the room from the entry!

Sorry, Antonio, that design with the entry that steps DOWN with the dark tile floors of the same color, could be cause for a nasty fall - I almost busted my butt the 2nd time we visited, in the dark, I forgot about the step down, and landed on my back-side! Maybe I'm the only one, but please careful out there...

The 'Cactus' is still the best around!

Juanita and Dave ('Porky Pig' on Nomad) sold the motel/bar/restaurant in 2001 to retire from that business, but own the surrounding land of Rancho Cielito Lindo. They built Gypsy's/ Wet Buzzard then handed operations over to Laura.

Cielito Lindo is not the place of the 40's... The Hamilton Ranch near Mision Santo Domingo (behind Colonia Guerrero) was the place movie stars went to in the old days... then the Santa Maria Sky Ranch was built east of where the La Pinta Hotel is.

Cielito Lindo was Rancho la Maņana in the 60's... the motel Cielito Lindo came after that... I first saw it in 1974.

Fang - 10-13-2006 at 10:11 AM

Stay at the Old Mill Hotel. Very clean, good prices & Jim & Nancy keep it in tip top shape.

NEVER eat at the Cannery Restaurant next door to the Old Mill, it is an overpriced hole!

The Old Mill Hotel & Cannery Rest. are in no way connected. Each is a completly different owership & operation. They just happen to be next door to each other.

Good food can be had at Don Eddies Rest. on the other side of the old mill. Just a few steps away from the old mill. You can also drive a short distance to Jardin's Rest. that also has great food.

David K - 10-13-2006 at 05:26 PM

Great to see you here Fang!

Jardines IS a good restaurant! See the review posted elsewhere here on Nomad...

Bajagato - 10-14-2006 at 01:09 PM

Everyone always has a lot to say when Cielito Lindo comes up. And I have to chime in too. First visit was at a BBBB party in 2001 ( right before it was sold I beleive) and we liked it alot. Although the rooms were not that great for the $. The atmosphere was great though and always enjoyed those margies. When we stayed there over New Years, I think it was 2004/05, the rooms were so nasty with mold that I was sure I would be ill, and if it wasn't for the fact we had drove from BOLA that day, I would have voted to high tail it home. San Quintin is a wonderful spot to visit, and we have stayed at the Old Mill and Don Eddies (twice) since. I would recommend either. And of course the food at Jardines...wonderful! We will have to try BajaCactus sometime, we've heard so much about it!

Forget CL

BajaRob - 10-17-2006 at 06:30 AM

Gene and Laura arranged for us to stay free there during the last Baja Bash held @ the Buzzard in 2004. We were over charged. We take a large group to the Old Mill from the South Campos each year and Nancy is the perfect hostess, read extremely tolerant. The rooms in the newer building are large and very comfortable.

David,
I agree! 100%--been there - done that .

But there is more than the desert enviroment--there is ---Underwater!

My group of SoCal diving associates and I discovered that the side wheeler/steam powered "Sacramento" struck and sunk on the Sacramento reef on its way back from the gold fields of California in the late 1800s. Many lives were lost as was most of the gold the passengers were carring.

In the very late 1950s and very early 1960s our OC diving group made a number of trips to E/R and on to Punta Baja in 4X4 WW11, surplus Dodge ambulances, the choice of our group, to dive the Sacramento via boats from the beach.

It was VERY very rough and always cold--and no gold was ever discovered on these trips. Why? the passenger were carring Gold Dust!

About 1961-2 Bob Ruetherford promoted a dive boat trip on the "Double Eagle" out of Newport Beach, to the Sacramento, to make an extensive search for treasure. Nothing of value was found except for one huge brass hatch cover and some very large lobsters .

My last Punta Baja trip was a 5 day trip during Thanksgiving in 1963 (?.) I have never been so cold in my life as I was during this trip! So I generally zoom past ER, but on the next trip will stop at Baja Cactus for a intro-visit .

Thanks for the very informative reply and great pictures. I and all on this board appreciate your expertise and efforts which are many..

The pleasure is mine Dean... thank you for joining Baja Nomad and sharing your great personal history and exploration on the peninsula!

I would like to meet you... if it is possible... to exchange memories of the magic peninsula and how it has touched the lives of so many in such a profound way!

David K,

It would be my honor and pleasure to meet you and the bride. It is always entertaining and certainly educational to have multigenerational conversations. I know it would certainly be for me; you have documented via pictures, GPS positioning and darn good stories on the forum.

As contrasted to my activies; we didn't take pictures, had a compass, and I still have a few good stories in me. When we frist began in Baja we were sort of like ole Cris Columbus, when we departed we didn't know where we were going, when we arrived we didn know where we were, and when we returned we didn't know where we had been. But it was always an high adventure.

If you are able to join us on Nov. 4th, it would be a treat for everyone... People make Baja special because we all have different aspects of what makes Baja so special to us.
Whenever we meet, it will be a good day sir!

Actually, the rooms are usually quite clean, but the lack of hot water just sucks.

The Baja Cactus Motel is the place to stay in El Rosario!

I stayed there on my way to Mulege and again on my return trip last week. You saw David's photos; the place is beautiful. The staff is first rate and very helpful.

I had the misfortune of getting food poisoning from eating crab burritos at Mama Espinosa's. (I am positive as to the source. The word is that I am not the only recent case.) The staff of The Baja Cactus were very concerned. The owner, Antonio also happened to be there. The staff offered to take me to the hospital (actually La Clinica), but I decided to tough it out in my room. (A wonderful place to rough it). The staff told Antonio of my plight and he came to see me. He didn't even know that I was a Nomad until I told him. Antonio drove me to get some sports drinks with electrolytes and some Lomotil. He also invited me to wake him up anytime during the night if I needed anything. I had to extend my stay there for two days. I spent the whole time sleeping, and I even passed out on the second day. I remember looking up and seeing the air conditioner. I said to myself, "I don't remember the air conditioner being in the bathroom." Actually, it wasn't....it was in the main room where the bed is. I thought I was still around the toilet, which by that time had become an old friend. But this is way-y-y too much information. The main point is, The Baja Cactus is a place of caring people in time of need.

I finally made it to San Diego where my brother lives. Once there I slept another five hours. His wife made chicken broth with noodles for me for the next two days. I am now home in Nevada City and am fully recovered.

Antonio is THE man...

Baja Cactus is THE place...

El Rosario has much more meaning with Antonio running the family motel and Pemex station. There are many more places to eat than at Mama Espinoza's if toneart's report scares any of you! In fact, we rarely eat there...

I want you all to know that it will be as much fun for him as it will be for you who join us on Nov. 4th for the VIVA BAJA CACTUS fiesta... Do join us!
