Young vs Old

 Pages:  1

Baja Bernie - 10-12-2006 at 07:20 PM

I just can't seem to remember any time in my 45 years of kicking around this Little Bit of Paradise called Baja that any of us have had problems with getting along with all age groups.

I have never experienced it on the old Amigo board and up until only a few weeks ago there didn't seem to be a devide between the young and the old here on the Nomad board.

I just do not understand what happened to the idea of Baja being a place where People really helped and cared for other People.

What really confuses this old fool is when a few of the young fools attack someone and then fall back on--I was just joking--

Here is an idea! Why don't we all just agree that we may want different things in Baja and then just get along with each other and forget our differences and laugh together when we can find common ground.

Just a thought.

BajaWarrior - 10-12-2006 at 07:25 PM

How old is old?

Frank - 10-12-2006 at 07:30 PM

Oh Bernie , its the internet thats all. On the net, that awkward age where you think you know it all and the age where you know you dont know it all just shows up better. Face to face Im sure there would be more respect given.

roundtuit - 10-12-2006 at 07:37 PM

Just remember that your kids were smarter than you before they were 21 and after 25 you were suddenly smarter than they were

Frank - 10-12-2006 at 07:38 PM

:lol:Mine still havent reached 25 yet Im still stupid

Two of mine are both in their 40's-----

Barry A. - 10-12-2006 at 07:43 PM

----but still have grave doubts about me, but are expert at humoring me--------

Thank Gawd that the other two, still in their 30's, think that I might have some useful ideas.

Got into a dispute with an old guy over something or another once. He got mad and accused me of being "disrespectful to my elders" and left in a huff. :?: An older lady who witnessed the dispute commented "He's just as dumb now as when he was 15 years old.:light: Stupid is a permanent condition.:O

Bruce R Leech - 10-13-2006 at 06:04 AM

oh Cypress now you have ruined my day, if Stupid is a permanent condition then there is no hope for my recovery that I have been waiting for.:o

Very Good Post Bernie!
I too have noticed a chage in the Board as well as a change in myself.

Words are not Actions.

All these years I learned to make Judgements of People by their Actions ,Not their Words; I sometimes wonder if those that will not reveal their Age, Experiences have something to Hide?

I am finding out that I much prefer the Company of Mexicanos to Americanos.
We see the everyday Actions of the Past Generarations and Naturally want to try to prevent them from making the same Mistakes that we as Youngsters Made.
I have come to the Conclusion that they lack many skills of life, the most being their Lack of Responsibility to their Fellow man, Their lack of Control of Their Basic Desires, Their inability to function with Out a Cell Phone or TV.
Their total dependance on the Media and accepting the Media as Factual And Last, the Most important Their LACK OF COMPASSION!!

An Ole Timer who Learned many Lessons by the Hard Knocks in Life, The most important" Not to Lie, Cheatt, nor Steal.

becoming a human being

capitolkat - 10-13-2006 at 06:25 AM

My children - ages 22- 28- have had their various stages of development and each of them has at one point had the light come on and become what I describe as a human being. My youngest had it happen this year- up until then I was a barrier to what she wanted, my vision wasn't her vision, the path to success doesn't have to be this hard, there has to be an easier way etc. Axioms that are the daily bread of the sucessful fell on deaf ears- "Oh dad that's so old school"- now know that I want to facilitate my children's dreams but I know there are no shortcuts to a degree or a job in the chosen field-whtever it may be.

Now that I'm talking to a human being the goal setting and planning for the future is easier and we share our thoughts more easily without the recriminations of the past as you can't really impose your will on others but only hope to influence them by positive contributions. I've always known that I had to step back and let them take their lumps when their choices were less than ideal and no I told you so's are permitted.

Now, that having been said I can only imagine the type of communications perfect strangers might have received from those who have not had the light go on. the internet is a shield to hide behind and throw out a lot of energy and see where it lands. Not every person has a light come on but most do- at least that's my theory and hope as I believe what Winston Churchill said- "I believe in positive thinking as there's no future in anything else."

a new best selling book- " The Power of Nice" really did wonders for me as it was a reflection of what I believe and somebody came along and put it to words and examples. Quick read for those who need inspiration ---Norm

Bruce R Leech - 10-13-2006 at 06:30 AM

I'm going to stay out of this one. I really don't know if I am young or old. I guess I am in the middle but I think that is what every one thinks about them selves.

I think some of you are taking this way to seriously, we need to keep our sense of humor or we are all going to age fast.

Diver - 10-13-2006 at 06:38 AM

Bruce, you're middle age and holding !! Don't get older !!!

AARP is trying to tell me I'm old with their recent barrage of mailings.
I ain't buying it !!

Over 50 with kids 5 and 11, I have many years before I can get old and thin-skinned.

vandenberg - 10-13-2006 at 07:00 AM

At 70, I consider myself at the high end of middle age.:biggrin::biggrin::biggrin:

A good thought!!That I agree absolutely with, it's the diversity that enriches LIFE.
Who ever bothers about anybodys age or other personal BIO datas - ask by U2U or better e mail - some have done so far with me! And I have found NEW great friends through it.
The NET is too dangerous a place,to leave too many personal information ready for abuse!
Some reach maturity earlier, some never - so age can't tell about somebodys status.
Some youngsters I met I could learn from, some Oldies I met keep repeating old mistakes. Stuck in the middle - I learn from both. Respect from me - to all.

"Bernie, you need more a a life. This type of worthless post shows your thin-skin and lack of anything else to do. It could only have backfired on you. Sorry"

You repeat yourself again! Thank you, I truly appreciate your concern.

At least I have tried to bring folks together rather than driving them apart.

Bruce R Leech - 10-13-2006 at 07:43 AM

I think we are middle aged until we die then we are old

Diver - 10-13-2006 at 07:52 AM

Oh my gosh !
No one is trying to drive anyone apart.
Some people are just kinda thin-skinned at times.
Can't I like you and respect your work but still give you a little grief for your faults, as a friend ?

Personally, I am quite used to receiving grief about my many faults from many sources ! (Especially my wife and kids !)

At a jobsite the other day when I got a little too serious, one of the workers says to me "Boy, it must be nice to be so important."
I (almost) immediately sported a wide smile as he was sooo right to give me grief. I had a much better day !
.

David K - 10-13-2006 at 07:55 AM

Good for you Bernie...

I see Baja Nomad as the following:

A) Baja Nomad can be like a toy for some... Play with it a little, cause some reaction with people you probably will never meet personally so it is safe to be nasty on. Or, to express their beliefs... not neccessarily to upsaet anybody, but it still happens!

B) For others, it is a tool... a source of information to aid in a future trip down the magic peninsula. A school of Baja knowledge or beliefs.

C) For most of the regular contributors, it is a place to share, to give, to help.... Also, to make new friends who share a fascination with the California peninsula or gulf.

D) Perhaps it is a combination of all of the above!?!

I just thank Doug Means ('Baja Nomad') for doing the hard thing almost daily... and that is keeping this site on the Internet and moderating it so it doesn't go too haywire when we act inmature here!

[Edited on 10-13-2006 by David K]

Diver - 10-13-2006 at 08:14 AM

Thank you for your synopsis David, all true.

Personally, I would chose D and would think that the majority of long-time Nomads feel the same.
We are all humans and we all enjoy Baja and most of us travel there or live there and we appreciate Nomads as a bit more than an information source.
Many of us have met/made friends through common interests expressed on this board.
We have shared knowledge on many other subjects as well.
Many have grown through the other humans on this board.
Many have gained and given help through this board.
We have braved and survived hurricanes and tragedies via this board.
Some have died and been mourned on this board.
I could go on.

And yes, thank you very much Doug Meands.
And thank you all.

Great thread! Tomorrow I leave for Baja with my 23 yr old son and a couple of his friends. My husband and I have been blessed with 2 kids that have often been more
leveled headed than us!! (don't get me wrong ....we have had our challenges as well!)
I am excited and feel blessed that our kids share our love and respect for Baja and it's
people. They teach me everyday and I am certain this trip will be no exception!!:tumble::yes:

Being on the receiving end of one such post recently I really appreciate your statements Bernie.

One of my favorite quotes I read somewhere that is supposed to be Mark Twain's (and I liked it even when I was young).

"At fifteen I started to think of my old man as an old fool. A few years later, at 25, we met up again and I was suprised to find out how much the old man had learned during those 10 years."

It still brings a smile to my face.

Nomad is not a "Chat Room"

thebajarunner - 10-13-2006 at 10:27 AM

I did this theme on another thread, but in deference to my great friend and colleague Bernie I will chime in briefly here as well.

I came to Nomad for information on Baja, for trip reports, for road reports, for new places to explore, for great food and lodging spots, etc. etc.

I did not come for a chat room,

Yes, I have found new friends here, but we "chat" by email, not on Nomad,

If Nomad continues to drift toward chat room status, then I, for one, am OUTTA HERE!

'Nuff sed.... I enjoy what we have had, don't make it something that suits just a few...

And I too thank Doug (with our without the "d") for his noble efforts.

Al G - 10-13-2006 at 10:49 AM

Bajarunner...I agree with your assessment to a degree. You must understand, things of a high level of interest, pertaining to Baja will be discussed. It is human nature. Drifting over the line will occur and usually someone will call attention to it unless it is of wide interest. MHO
EDIT
I do not see this a bad thing. Infact the last short while has been very enjoyable.

As an addition I would like to say I have been able to get to know many of the new Nomads and I am very glad they are here. May have ruffled a few of their feathers, but I am sure they understand and will be great Nomads.

Other than those that posted pics on that one thread a while back. I'm assuming you were refering to actual age, not "Nomad Years". I obviously missed some posts recently, but do you honestly feel it's an old/young age thing? I know I can make some assumptions when people make reference to their 2 & 4-year olds versus their 25-40 y/o kids! Thanks for the compliment anyway.

Never mind, your too hard to classify

Ken Cooke - 10-14-2006 at 11:51 AM

I turned 38 in July, so not exactly "Young", but young at heart I guess...

My age has come up a few times in a negative way here on Nomad, but like David and others have mentioned, ppl tend to say things on the internet they normally don't say in person.

I hope to spend at least 38 more years traveling south of the border.:light:

Ken

Baja Bernie - 10-14-2006 at 12:15 PM

Why only 38 more? Do you plan on wasting the rest of your life?:lol::lol::lol::lol:

Al G - 10-14-2006 at 12:24 PM

Ken...This started way back in another thread when a couple 30 somethings stated people over 50 (elderly) were more dangerous when driving. and then morphed into this one.
Both threads little, if anything to do with age, but all to do with respect you give and receive. It does seem, at least to me, the older you get the more you understand what respect is.

FARASHA - 10-14-2006 at 01:52 PM

I had to fight with AGE till I was a youngster, always been a PETIT, looking way younger as I really was. People tended to treat me different as when the knew my REAL age.
I was so annoyed at times that I got very sensitive about this issue. And after hitting the 40ties I just gave up. SO WHAT - if they think I'm younger - I just give them a BIG smile. And I feel great the last **years -( now go and figure it  )

Bruce R Leech - 10-14-2006 at 04:17 PM

Skeet/Loreto - 10-14-2006 at 04:37 PM

Young vs. Old:

Food for thought or anyway you take it!

Here in the Great State of Texas, the Rivalry between my old Hi School and Tascosa Hi School has gotten out of Hand, whereby the Hazing incidents are getting downright Nasty, Property Damaging with Paint Guns etc.

I am suggesting to the Amarillo School district that they go back to Hi School Intermural Boxing- The Cowards and Wimps who sneek up and Paint Ball a House or Car or Residence could get a Go in a Boxing Ring woth each other the Night before the "Big Game". Would proably have a Big Draw!

In addiation to that it just Might teach those Youngsters the Manly Art of Fighting. If an intruder with a Gun came into the School to Kill Students as has happened lately, there would be someone in the room who could Fight, instead of running and Hiding , as being taught in the Schools Today.
Just think of the Lives that could be saved by one "Fighting Student" who would Choose to Fight instead of Hiding and be Gunned Down at will while Hiding under a Desk!

Fear is a Dreadful thing, look at the reactions of the Nomads when the Killings were going in Northern Baja recently.

Look at the responders who seemed to be afraid to Post their Age and Experiences on this Board. Why? Is it Fear??

Might it be that they are being Taught Fear by the Schools and their Parents?

Anon The Preacher

Man, did I ever come in on the tail end of this one. Thanks Al G. I was wondering where this thread came from, love the way these trails sometimes take the most interesting trails. If you jump in half way, you can wind up standing in the middle of the trail scratching your head lost, wondering where did this come from and how did they get here anyway.

O.k., so now I get it. Anyway, I am over 50 and I don't even want to drive anything more than my old bike anymore, but sometimes I have to. jejeje................

bajalera - 10-16-2006 at 11:51 AM

As the Oldest Living Nomad, one of the last things I would ever do is try to keep younger people from repeating my past mistakes. Mistakes can be fun to look back on--and they definitely make for more interesting conversations than perfection ever does

And I hope those serious types who object to our occasional silliness will close the door behind them when they leave--and maybe take along with them the folks who periodically complain about bad spelling.

The Nomad board can be a source of information when info is needed, but there's no rule that says we always have to be in dead earnest or use spell-checkers.

Cypress - 10-16-2006 at 12:15 PM

What's a spell-checker?:o:O

FARASHA! Thanks! Been feeling a little wierd for the past couple of days. Can you recommend a spell-checker?:) What do they charge for checking spells?:?::o

Who started this thread??

Baja Bernie - 10-16-2006 at 12:32 PM

I've been gone for a few days looking for a life.

When I returned I looked at the end of this thing and had to fast backward to the start to see that I had really started it with the title, Young vs Old ( I really did have an idea that that is where it started, but was really was not sure because of where I found it.)

I for one will go the beginning in the future before I chime in on a thread when I really don't know what it is about--been guilty of that myself--Heck sometimes the missed trail is more fun that the one that we started on.

Anyway, I do believe that it should end somewhere along this dusty trail.

FARASHA - 10-16-2006 at 12:57 PM

I plead guilty for deviating from the subject - BUT I just could not resist. It popped up my mind - that spell thing. And then it just happened, out of my hands this habit, to see the funny part of something. Got me into troubles all my Life. :( So sorry -Bernie. No excuse that I'm too young, or that I'm already old and senile.

FOR CYPRESS: how to get rid of a SPELL!
Had a dream and a SKINWALKER appeared, walking backwards and smiling at me.
That means, you have to do EVERYTHING backwards to backtrack the spell, backwards writing, talking.walking, I really mean EVERYTHING........that should lift the spell.
NOW try to have your breakfast backwards - please let us now how it works!!!If you stumble over something, or else -THAT was then THE SPELL.

Cypress: Might be!
Met my wife when she was 24 and I 48! That was 1979- Still going Strong!
Hope you are as Lucky.

Bajamatic - 10-18-2006 at 11:04 AM

A 70 year old man was having his annual checkup and the doctor asked him how he was feeling. "I've never been better!" he boasted. "I've got an eighteen year old bride who's pregnant and having my child! What do you think about that?"

The doctor considered this for a moment, then said, "Let me tell you a story. I knew a guy who was an avid hunter. He never missed a season. But one day went out in a bit of a hurry and he accidentally grabbed his umbrella instead of his gun."

The doctor continued, "So he was in the woods and suddenly a grizzly bear appeared in front of him! He raised up his umbrella, pointed it at the bear and squeezed the handle." "And do you know what happened?" the doctor queried.

Dumbfounded, the old man replied "No".

The doctor continued, "The bear dropped dead in front of him!"

"That's impossible!" exclaimed the old man.

"Someone else must have shot that bear."

"That's kind of what I'm getting at..." replied the doctor.

THANK you AlG- I'm in your category of the YOUNG then!!

Been away for somedays - jeeze, what happened to this thread??
Odd - most guys dreaming for younger females, except for one who cheerishes the Old Woman.

EVER thought that YOUNG females want this too?? HM would I fancy a 18 year old guy!? :?:
Nahh, energy and timewaste, to teach them all that matters.
It's like with good WINE. Gets taste with age.
The younger wine just gives me diarrhea.

Here is an idea! Why don't we all just agree that we may want different things in Baja and then just get along with each other and forget our differences and laugh together when we can find common ground.

Just a thought.

Good word, there are alot of things to agree on, I have found that sharing cold beer and fresh fish, with almost anyone, is a good way toward common ground.

You got that right--but a warm beer is good for me.

Your right Skeets... I believe it was Martinez, CA..
I don't want to make issue about this guy. I think his issues were deeper then just being young and dumb. On the outside he appeared to be intelligent. His cause may have been from lack of knowledge and understanding of main stream issues, but his attempt to get attention for them was a problem rooted deeper then that issue. Reminds me of suicide bombers except few if any of those bombers have knowledge of the outside world concepts. I just wondering how long before they run out this level of ignorant people.

If there is something here of credit, I take none. Guys making comments of 18 year olds has been happening all of our lives. No big deal. Just something that has been done since we were 18 ourselves. Lately though when I think of 18-25 year old people, I seem to think of them more as I once thought of 6-15 year old.So hence my response. Today I am more inclined to want to be close to people that have settled on their issues. Damn...I thing that is the same thing you said............

FARASHA - 10-24-2006 at 06:21 AM

OKAY AlG, hope it's not too painful to find that out!

AND I need to ADD: I came latly to the conclusion that sometimes the old Wine turnes into vinegar :P
OR the flashy bottle (or brand name) doesn't keep the promises as well.
So I switched to beer instead. NO headache next day!

Crusoe - 10-24-2006 at 06:58 PM

Skeet/Loreto - 10-25-2006 at 03:11 PM

This is Old!

True Story: The other day while checking out at the Local Wal-Mart, there was a very nice looking Lady going through the usual routine of taking her time, writing a check, posting the Check, talking up a Storm as the line grew longer..

The Pretty Lady took her time, and as I only had one small item{being a Senior Citizen, with limited funds, I followed her through the Garden Area, where she had stopped to arrange her Purse in an orderely manner.

I spoke, she replied and a conversation began. Talking got around to where she lived and if she had gone to Amarillo Hi School. She replied in the
Affimative that she had done so in 1948.{Same as me}.
I Told her my name and immeidately she "Threw.
her Arms around me and Shouted "Skeeter", You were the first Boy to ever Kiss me!! and it was at 15th and Washington near the Park, One Night, and I was only Fourteen Years Old!!!!

I was stunned!,Not from the Warm Embrace, but from the Fact that I did not know who was pressing that "Young feeling body aganist me"..I did not remember!!!!!!!!!!!

As she slowly released her embrace, she told me her Name, and I being a Gentleman of Renown exclaimed that I too remembered.

She gave me her Phone number and the fact that she was alone and we parted, promising to stay in touch{by Phone}.

The next day I drove by 15th and Washington and did in Fact remember, jogged my feeble old brain, back to 1947.

They are all Beautifull Ladies-Young or Old and all in Between.

Remember Lera- We are all Sinners!

And Skeet

Baja Bernie - 10-25-2006 at 06:18 PM

will we get a follow up to this post or are you still a true Baja Gentleman?

PS I agree with Jesse that the Mexicans in Baja are not like their brothers on the mainland. That is why, it seems to me, that so few of them join the march across the border.

An old guy in camp had this posted on the back of his truck-- I really think he needs some professional help, "Old Guys Rule" Nutty because even when I was young, I seem to remember, it was the softer gender that grasped the reins.:biggrin:. What am I laughing about?
