The Cruise ship was crowded with people, off for three days of pleasure.
Ahead of me in the passageway walked a tiny woman in brown slacks, her shoulders hunched, her white hair cut in a bob.
From the shup"s intercom came a familiar tune "Begin The Beguine." Suddenly a wonderful thing happened. The woman, unaware anyone was behind her, did
a quidk and graceful dance step:shuffle, slide.
As she reached the door to the dinning salon, she ressembled her dignity and stepped soberly through.
Younger people often think folks our age are beyond romance, dancing our dreams. They see us as age has shaped us; camoulaged by wrinkles, thick
waists and gray hair. They don't see the people inside. To them we are the wise old codgers, the dignified matrons.
No one would ever know that we are still the shinny kid who grew up in Amarillo, Texas. Inside, we still think of ourselves as the youngest child in a
vivacious family. And we are still the romantic teeager who longed for love, the young adult who aspired to siocial respectability; but whom shall we
tell?
We are like the woman in the ship's passageway, in whom the music still echoes. We are the sum of all the lives we once lived. we show the grown-up
part, but inside we are still the laughing children, the shy teens, the dream-filled youths.
There still exists, most real, the matrix or all we were or ever yearned to be.
In our hearts we still hear "Begin the Beguine"
Think about it!

thanks for sharing that Skeetshari - 10-21-2006 at 12:32 PM
Gosh Skeet, I'm busted, I opened this thread thinking OK, I'm young (at heart) and then you had to go and mention Begin the Begine...which was a tune
I danced our families signature choreography to many many times and remember so cleary my feet start tapping away....thanks for the memories and
reminding me of my age....drat!
I THOUGHT I WAS THE ONLY ONE...
M - 10-21-2006 at 12:52 PM
Who felt that way! My husband, not to be fooled though, still calls me 'little girl' or most often, 'BRAT'. God knows how childish I can be sometimes.
Thanks for that Skeet, I loved your story and insight.
Hugs,
MDon Alley - 10-21-2006 at 01:10 PM
Well, not "Begin the Beguine."
Maybe "Chinacat Sunflower."BajaNomad - 10-21-2006 at 01:29 PM
Maybe our "young" nomad needs background on what exactly "Begin the Beguine" is (and possibly who Artie Shaw is):
Up until about a decade ago, when I'd be doing something stupid and potentially deadly, and fun, in the back of my mind a little imaginary newspaper
would have a story with my name in it and a line that said: A Mt. Shasta youth was tragically killed on Wednesday when.......
I was already old enough THEN for an AARP discount!
I hope it never changes.
Thanks Skeetjimgrms - 10-21-2006 at 03:37 PM
There is another song that brings back memories , tequilla makes her clothes fall off

Nice Skeet, I have been re-thinking my view of older folks, and this helps. There was a time when I was younger when I hardley gave older folks a
thought, but guess what happened, I got older!Al G - 10-21-2006 at 07:02 PM
A persons age has four categories:
1) How old you are.
2) How old you feel.
3) How old you act.
4) How well you treat your body.
There is a fifth that only applies to online...........
5) How well you slap down 30 somethings for being disrespectful. especially if they troll...all in fun....
I love this forum.Al G - 10-21-2006 at 07:06 PM
There is a sixth........
How well you remember...
I will not delete, but this last post was meant for Bernie's post....longlegsinlapaz - 10-21-2006 at 07:21 PM
Excellent post Skeet! I must be at that difficult age!! I recognize "Begin the Beguine" when I hear it, but I gotta admit that it takes something
more along the lines of "Louie Louie" or "Heard it Through the Grapevine" for me to feel the beat! vgabndo - 10-21-2006 at 09:51 PM
Yeah Longlegz:
I was kinda thinkin' Booker T and the MG's and Green Onions.

That tune and the flip side were the only two "round-eye" songs on the juke box at the Ace of Clubs in Henoko Kushisan, Okinawa when I was a teen-aged
jar head.
If you found someone who REALLY knew "tha haps", they might mention some band called the Beatles. I didn't hear them for another year. I know

PFUI - makes me feel quite sentimental and OLD.bajalera - 10-24-2006 at 02:47 PM
Skeet, I'm shocked--shocked! That Golden Oldie is about FOOLING AROUND: "And we suddenly know . . . the sweetness of sin . . . when they begin . . .
the beguine."
Must be a couple of those irresponsible pot-smoking lazy young people you periodically complain about. And God only knows what a beguine is!
But you know how to spell it, and that's impressive.bufeo - 10-24-2006 at 02:52 PM

A dance originating in the Caribbean, similar to the rumba.

Gee thanks, Bajaguy!! I just moved into a rental while I build my LAST (so help me!) casa! All my books are packed & will remain packed until my
final move. So I can't get to my yearbooks. The name doesn't SOUND familiar, what'd he teach....I think I can safely say I didn't have him for any
classes, but it's still be interesting to see if I recognize him....if he was there '61-'65.
