May is usually just a little bit early. I have fished there Memorial weekend the last couple of years. The Yellowtail are just starting to arrive

Remember this might be an El Nino year. That could bring the yellowfin Tuna. It may also change the water temps earlier, etc, etc.
Re lures, while I don't fish much anymore, I don't think things have changed:
Blue/white salas 6X for jigging
Green/yellow salas 6X for jigging
Feathers for Dodo trolling
6x1 quick retrieve reel
6' to 6.5' pole
15 - 30 lb test line

wait about three weeks if you can, the winds calm down a bit and the yellows come in. good choice of boats, had one for years till i sold it this

I have had my best luck at that time of year casting to boils. When you head out in the morning you will likely see several pangueros just hanging
out in an area. Join them and just wait. Suddenly the water erupts about 300' across. Join in the sprint to get to it with every one else then
sling a jig into it. Give it a 10-20 count then start cranking as fast as you can. When it gets slammed don't swing on it. Just keep cranking til
it starts pulling drag then set your hook firmly.
Typical YT jigs have been all been effective. B/W, scrambled egg, etc. These are typically morning bites. Once the bite shuts down I like to troll
CD-14's. Everything eats them. YT, Cabrilla, and anything else in the area.
For camping with your own boat I like Daggetts. He has 3-sided palapas in case the wind picks up but he is still close enough to Guillermos ramp.
You can't go wrong if you hire a guide for your first day just to get a read on current conditions and effective methods.

Can't say I'm a recent BOLA expert cuz have not fished there for 18 years. I plan on changing that next year with a 2-week trip there in 3/07. But
back then I'd fish BOLA 4-5 times a year during all the seasons cuz the fishing was always great for bottom fishing. Gold spot bass (cabilla),
spotted bass, mexican lingcod (best eating fish there), big triggerfish, sheephead, many other different species that escape me now. You never knew
what you'd be bringing up next. Even caught a few sea snakes. Oh yes even halibut. Our best luck fishing was off the eastside of Smith. I
personally do not care much for the taste of YT. It fights ok but so does bonita. Back then I had a 18' Bayrunner and will be towing down a Cabo 216
this time.
Tried many different baits and setups but the most suggessful for this type of fishing was 30# surf leader with 2/0 snelled hooks, 4oz torpedo sinker
on the bottom and squid for bait. Very inexpensive setup. Caught most of the fish between 90-250 ft of water (except triggers).
Perhaps the fishing has changed since then, but plan on bringing 20 lbs of frozen squid on dry ice with some frozen sardines and anchovies leftover
from my twice weekly offshore fishing trips here in San Diego. I'm retiring soon and am seriously going to look into spending time again in BOLA now
that the kids do not need dad much anymore except for $.

I concur with 4baja, it could be windy season still. Glad we did our trip in mid-June, 2006....no winds, flat calm waters, great tail bitings.
This year, we'll be going to La Paz in the last week of Sept., putting a 10 boat caravan event, and welcome any other boaters to join us, departing
from Sandie Eggo for 9 days.

pierguy, i may be up fpr that trip. keep me posted as thats a great time of year for that area. have new boat and can run.
