Women in Cantinas...not

shari - 10-26-2006 at 10:46 AM

When I first came to Baja, my lanchero amigos took me to a Cantina in guerreo negro. I couldnt understand why I was the only woman in there. Yes there were women looking fellows...transvestites...that often fooled the tourist men much to their dismay! I later found out that it is illegal for women to enter Cantinas...unless you have an ID card...once in Constitucion I was looking for a cold Tecate and walked into a bar where I was asked for my ID...I was flattered but he didn't mean my age ID....he wanted my Prostitute ID...a card which they carry proving a clean bill of health from the clinic. OOOPS....so ladies...just to let ya know...sometimes nobody will say anything cause they like to have chicks in the cantina but it is illegal. Also I went to a Ladies Bar thinking, OK, this one I can get into...but Ladies Bar means "ladies available"!!! So guys, when you see those gals in the cantina...beware...they aren't!

Hook - 10-26-2006 at 10:56 AM

This is incredible! But it must also be ignored in many destinations. My wife and I have been in many cantinas together.

Is it possible that escorted women are exempt?

Paula - 10-26-2006 at 11:31 AM

Why, it's certainly to protect the virtue and safety of our fair and delicate sex, Kate.:bounce::lol::bounce::lol:

Just like a birka...

No !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

motoged - 10-26-2006 at 12:51 PM

What, that wasn't a woman?????????????????:barf::lol::o:barf:

DENNIS - 10-26-2006 at 01:18 PM

I can remember many years ago in Ensenada, bars that were, only by tradition I believe, for men. There were no bar stools but at the base of the bar on the customer side was a trough, about a foot wide, with slow running water draining to one end. The bar had no restroom. Well, not a restroom of the civilized style. Maybe thats why ladies wouldn't go in there. No TP on the bar.

JZ - 10-26-2006 at 01:28 PM

Lots of Catinas allow women, you are just hanging out at the wrong places!

Iflyfish - 10-26-2006 at 04:47 PM

My brother tells the story of being picked up by the cops one evening for asking this rather discheveled woman if fish net stockings where he might find a hilado stand. She told him and then the cops came and tried to arrest him. He offered the usual mordida and then was told "no" by the cop. His protests and queries pried from the cop the reason, "sir, that was no lady", "you have offended public decency!". He finally paid the required ten bucks and was on his way. Ne Modo No?

Oso - 10-26-2006 at 05:36 PM

I've told the old story about the two gringo couples in Guaymas more than once so I don't want to be accused of having Alzheimer's by repeating it again. "Ladies Bar" has come to have a completely different meaning in Baja than its origins in the D.F. On the mainland, traditional cantinas would by law have a small metal sign over the door prohibiting the entrance of women, minors and soldiers in uniform. Many often had a "Depto. de Mujeres" around the corner which was a very small room, standing room only, with a pass-through to the bar where a "decent" lady could purchase a discreet shot without attracting attention. Women within the cantina itself were assumed to be prostitutes and required to have health cards. Due to the influence of tourism, the phenomenum of more modern lounges catering to couples, foreigners and more "enlightened" upper class Mexicans arose and were distinguished by the term, in English, of "Ladies Bar" to distinguish them from traditional cantinas and were not subject to the same law. Somehow the term became used in Baja to signify the availability of companions to whom the applicability of the term "Lady" could be debated.

shari - 10-27-2006 at 08:57 AM

I asked the local police about Cantinas to check out for myself and yep they said it's illegal for the owners to allow women, escorted or solas, but there are new bars where women can go...just not the old cantinas, which do not have womens bathrooms either. Some people call bars, cantinas etc...but there is a difference...los hombres don't want their wives waltzing into the cantina while they are dancing with the "lady" with the adams apple! Uh uh...so ni modo muchachas

spike - 10-27-2006 at 12:33 PM

Did the police tell you how you can tell which bars are "legal" for women?

Australian bars

Skipjack Joe - 10-27-2006 at 02:47 PM

It must have been 1955 when we arrived in Australia. I was 8 at the time. I remember my parents going to to have a beer at an establishment with a 'Hotel' sign over the front door on Puckle Street, Melbourne. We no sooner stepped in than we knew something was wrong. A couple of the men were winking at mom and making suggestive noises. Her face grew red and she became real agitated. We left real fast outta there. On the way home they talked about it and figured things out.

It takes time to understand the ways of people. European women often don't know that they're expected to shave their underarms in this country. Another source of embarassment.

:?: from where did you gather this Information?? Sounds an very OLD source of embarassment. Depends which COUNTRY witin Europe you refere to!!
I'm European (Austrian) - and we do shave - not only underarms!!

DENNIS - 10-28-2006 at 08:15 AM

So, lets see, where has this thread taken us?
If you meet a woman in a cantina who hasn't shaved, she may not be a woman?
Could it be the goatee that would give away the secret?

I'm sorry for taking so long Farasha. I tried to get in touch with Schwarzenegger's office to confirm your statements.

As stated above, those are memories from the 50's. They were mostly Italians.

A prior search of the internet showed that male-only bars are also a part of the past in Australia and you won't find them these days, either. The women's movement changed that years ago.

BTW, the governor's reponse:
"In Kahleefohneea only girlie-boys shave their underarms" :tumble:

bajaguy - 10-29-2006 at 09:23 AM

Somebody bashing Italians?????.........gee, hope not....whatsa matta for you, anyway????

I have enough trouble shaving my face

FARASHA - 10-29-2006 at 10:56 AM

OMG you are funny GUYS - really. Well I will certainly NOT go into details.:biggrin::biggrin:
BUT it is quite common (females AND males) to have a good waxing job or a shave on hairy parts - especially Gay and Transvestites are extremely into it.
We used to have special establishment for them - but nowadays - all mixed up, no one cares. Go wherever you want and do what ever pleases you, as long as you stay within the law ( no sexual harassements, no kids molesting, etc.)
YOU can be dead sure that there is in Austria absolut no place a woman can't go. Equal rights for all. We have our own Ministry for it.

and then there is 'sport shaving'...

AND don't bother to ask ARNIE - he is too OLD to know whats going on here now.
When he left Austria he was on Steroids - something that inflicts memory and cognitive abilities - in exchange for build up muscles!!:saint:

Certain women in 'Ladies Bars' might be suspect...as shari mentioned.

Summanus - 10-29-2006 at 11:04 AM

It might pay to wear your glasses.

Skeet/Loreto - 10-29-2006 at 12:40 PM

Guyumas--Many Years ago.- Early 70's

Posado Hotle near San Carlos- Went in and sst down to have a Drink after a long Flight from Fresno Calif.. Found one of the most interesting Carved Scenes on a Large Wall of the Bar.
As we looked around observed a Couple setting a few feet away. Did a Double take and sure enough it was a Lady!!
The Lady was none other than the Great Lisa Minelli--In a Bar??

She told us that she was there to make a Film about the Rum Runners during the years of Probitation days in San Diego where Boats where used to Run Boose from Baja to San Diego.
There did not seem to be any thing Illegal about that Beautifull Lady in a Bar.

In La Paz many years ago, you could go into a number of Places on the Malacon, near the Public Market, Dance with many young Ladies, make arrangements for other Activities.
The Ladies would be delivered to your Hotel, picked up the following Morning.

It was very similar to the "B Girl " activities in the States.

Skeet

women in cantinas, bars. night clubs...and shaving habits

Summanus - 10-29-2006 at 01:06 PM

You can always meet many, many exceptional females (tourists mainly, but not always) in Baja Norte and Sur cantinas and bars. I have danced with quite a few from the seventies until just last month. These popular places are legendary. I could never imagine these clubs in Baja ever turning away single gals wanting to see some local color and adventure. It just has not happened that way wherever we have been. I think perhaps the old country cantinas are somewhat different in thier approach, as the ones we have visited were almost exclusively male places...except for those of us with our wives. When in Rome, you know.

Few weeks back there was a cute fella having a facial threading at the Indian place down the street from me. I just had to ask.:biggrin:
He said it lasted much longer than "common" waxing.

Summanus - 10-29-2006 at 01:33 PM

We have a waxer at home. It produces quite a few screams from time to time. Luckily we live in the country.

jorgie - 10-30-2006 at 07:56 AM

Shari, ya gotta save some for yer book.......I been leaving this alone but now I gotta ask.......what is "threading" ??????

FARASHA - 10-30-2006 at 08:26 AM

THREADING: done with 2 threads of yarn, which are in a certain way twisted, to get rid of unwanted hairs in face or elsewhere.
Basically the fine hairs are ripped out of their roots!!:P a painfull procedere, but common in the orient.

jorgie - 10-31-2006 at 06:19 AM

OUCH !!!!!!!

FARASHA - 10-31-2006 at 12:29 PM

Jorgie - imagine now, most of the male population in the near and middle east have this threading done every 1 to 2 weeks or so, in his face, to remove the fine hairs around the eyes, temples, earlobes, it's included in the shaving service that most men have at barber shops done !!!!
I filmed it while my darling sat there for a shave, I captured every single tear he shed!! And he told me afterwards - NEVER EVER AGAIN!!

This I have never understood: why the aversion against body hair?

Out of curiosity, I tried shaving my armpits one time. It was terrible: the skin chafed to rawness for weeks until the hair grew back in to buffer it. The problem wasn't the bristle, but the lack of separation/lubrication between the skin surfaces. With that experience I came to the conclusion that underarm and crotch hair has a real purpose...

--Larry

OK Larry give us the rest of the story:lol:

DENNIS - 10-31-2006 at 02:53 PM

NO, nasal hairs are not done with threading, its done with a fine scissor.
