Don, I assume the photo was taken in the Cactus Sanctuary just north of El Triunfo as you posted before. We have spent several trips there with Demitrio as a guide. He is also a great guide to other spots in the area as this area was one of the original areas settled by Manual Ocio in mission times and a big gold/silver mining area. Just east of the sanctuary is a nice lake with some good bird-watching. I certainly would recommend the cactus sanctuary as a wonderful place to visit. Thanks for posting.

Jack - That lake... would it be Lago del Oro?

Girlfriend and I took a back road from a ways north of San Bartolo, and after a long time on the scenic route we ended up at the Cactus Sanctuary. Never did find that lake, but JR said we had to have practically run over it. Has a little white cement bridge nearby. Looks real sweet in photos.

Yes, that's from the cactus sanctuary. So is the pic of the centipede. I'm posting another cactus pic if/when I have the time.

Natalie Ann: the lake is within 3 miles of El Rosario (the one N of El Triunfo). It has an ancient dam on it and is actually between El Oro and El Rosario (Las Gallinas). So, it could be lago del oro. El Oro was the location of Manual Ocio's hacienda. Lots of history there!

This is so interesting, I think we'll have to make another trip there when we have more time to explore. Is El Rosario a town or a rancho? And who is Manuel Ocio? Is the lake on the same road or a side road?

David, I don't know how you do it! I use Picasa for all my photos, but couldn't find Ocio's hacienda or the lake photos. Thanks. There is much more about Ocio in Crosby's "Antigua California". Lots of history in this area. Still some mining going on too. Got a new 4Runner for this year and it has no brush striping on the sides. Gotta get out there and put some on so it looks like its been offroad.
