Try disconnecting the Battery for about a half hour, sometimes this will reset.

If you do that it will lose the code and you will never now what turned it on.

try putting the gas cap on tighter....

the light will come on if the cap is off or loose

sometimes it's as simple as that....

Did you have any hot Scantily-Clad Babes in the car ? That might have done it.

Have 2 here in La Paz,. one for sale $65.00

bancoduo - 11-5-2006 at 11:17 AM

It could be a bad tank of gas.

comitan - 11-5-2006 at 11:19 AM

It could be 1 of a 1000 things, Bob is right about the gas cap most often.

Taco de Baja - 11-5-2006 at 12:07 PM

Could be 100's of things.
You can usually buy one for $50-100 on ebay.....and then charge $5-$10 to read codes as a service to the people of Loretto ;)

Read the code(s), write it (them) down and then go to OBD-Codes.com

This will have a number of solutions on how to fix the reason the code(s) came on in the first place.

If you simply disconnect the battery to clear the code you are like an ostrich sticking your head in the sand. The light came on for a reason....Might be a lose gas cap but could also be a bad O2 sensor or a dirty MAF, a misfire in cylinder #2, a bad Catalytic converter.....

How many miles are on the odometer? I bought a used Toyota, had it for a week, and going down the freeway the check engine light came on. I pulled over and started reading the owners manual, cars buzzing by, and found the damned light came on at 60000 miles to warm me of a service interval!

I remember that happening to me on a Isuzu. I think there is a reset button under the dash. It will tell you in the manual.

The oxygen sensor light came on in my VW Vanagon while on a recent trip to Colorado. I stopped at NAPA Auto Parts and they told me it wouldn't hurt my engine to drive it home. When I got home I looked up a Vanagon Forum and found that there is a little box on the speedometer cable that triggers the light every 30,000 miles. I reset the button and it works fine. I had just replaced the oxy sensor about 15,000 miles ago. Maybe Toyota has something like that.
