Loreto waterfall

A waterfall near Loreto. Ths is the lowest of a series of three dams a few miles west of town, on a tributary of the arroyo that runs through Loreto.

There is no pool above this. It is filled with rock, sand and gravel. Last year there was a pool behind the next dam, 50 yards or so upstream. That dam since blew out and no longer holds water. A third dam farther up is only 3-4 feet high and is silted in so it too has no pool.

I'm told these dams were originally for a commercial crayfish operation. They may have failed, but it's a popular picnic spot. It's not too difficult a climb up this waterfall to the upper dams.

The stream joins the main arroyo a stone's throw down from the falls, and the water goes underground a mile or so downstream. The Baja 1000 runs up the arroyo in this area; a few racers on practice or exploratory runs blew by us.

Do you have GPS coordinates to this? I would like to visit on my trip down there next week.

I don't have GPS coordinates.

Turn south from Lorerto. Where the divided highway merges back to two lane there is a turnoff to the west. I believe it is now signed "San Javier," as is the main San Javier road farther on. Take this road.

The road goes down to the arroyo, then up it. The waterfall is in a small tributary to the right, a short distance (maybe 100 feet?) up. It's not the first right turn, but I don't remember it it's the second. You'll find it. If you climb out of the arryo you've gone too far.

The Baja 1000 races up the arroyo, so don't get stuck up there at race time,:o:lol:
