I'm assuming that Corky is up to his you-name-it in Mulege mud, but he's been missing from the board for over a month and I was wondering if anyone knew how he was doing.

I too was wondering. He was to be there around the middle of October. I had never met him but I contributed to his fund. We exchanged emails and upon his request I gave him a report on damage to his house. His was one of the hardest hit in The Orchard, being right next door to the yellow house now famous in the flood photos; the one where only fragmented yellow pillars were left standing. I couldn't enter his house because the entrances were blocked with furniture, mattresses and debris.

I'm sure that if he is there (I am not), he is up to his elbows in the difficult work. If Bruce reaches him, I think he (sharks) will go to an internet cafe in town and check in with us. I do think his house is salvageable but it will take a lot of work and money. At the time I left in mid-October, the roads, water and electric at his end were not yet repaired. Cleaning up The Orchard is becoming an unhappy issue with the residents because Roberto has done very little.

Corky, come on man....Nomads want to know you are OK.

Flattered but shook up a bit

Just returned today as I was stuck in a near-blizzard on my way home last night in the Siskyous Mountains.

I have much to report. I'll say this much now. Mulege is beat up pretty good. Most folks are resuming their daily routine but to say normal would not be correct. The flood took possessions and peoples homes away. More than that though it did something very strange indeed to the normally passive resident peon. Reminisent of New Orleans the desparate folks grabbed the oppotunity to salvage or rather "steal" stuff from others affected by the flood.
Countess stories I have heard of how entire famlies would descend upon victims homes and pillage and plunder their remaning stuff.
Totally disgraceful and bad for the town it's visitors and the people who love and support it.
The thread about violence in Mulege underscores the problem(s) alive and kicking there. I truly believe the town has serious disipline problems regarding it's local trouble-makers. The police know who they are, the just fail to reign them in. Let's face it, people everywhere, in every town and neighborhood in every part of the world have dishonest people living near them. They rear their ugly heads in these times of crisis. THe plague of society, these opportunists emerge to do their dirty work, then retreat until the time is right. My point being, In Mulege these slime-balls are still at it. As soon as the Army left they came out of their holes again.
I have some strong words to say about the protection the police are supposed enforce. I think it's time they made a few arrests or perhaps a few dismissals in their force.

Fear is normal reaction. Stand firm, things will change.



AS far as our house goes.....well it stands proud again. But needs some serious work.
