My friend wants me to drive his car down to La Paz, Baja California.
can he take an insurance that covers me while i'm travelling with his car by myself ? which additional paper should i have with me ? is a written permission to drive his car enough ?

best check with the insurance company.

You need to insure your drivers liscense, at least, to drive in Mexico. That gives you basic coverage. Full coverage is something else. Im sure it would be wise to have some kind of written permission to be driving his car. Regardless of what any law says, and who would know that, driving another persons car could cause you problems. After all, Baja is not only the land of enchantment, it is also the land of stolen cars and that's how you might be treated if you cant prove you belong in that car.
Do what bajabound suggests, check with the insurance people and dont trust anybody who says you have nothing to be concerned about.
And, empty the ash trays and throw out all the empty beer cans before you leave home.
And check the oil.

Arsene,

Get a notarized letter from your friend that states you have permission to drive the vehicle in Mexico. Depending on the age and value of the vehicle, you can get a daily insurance policy that will insure his vehicle with you as the driver, and it will provide coverage for physical damage/theft as well as any liability exposure as a result of an accident. You can also list your friend as the lienholder on the policy.....so the notarized letter, insurance policy and registration all tie together nicely in the event the authorities have questions.

Hope this helps....

my full coverage mexican insurance insures any driver as long as you have a drivers license. It's the car that's insured.
