Life sometimes throws us a curve ball that forever changes us.

A little over 13 years ago... Driving home to Coeur d'Alene, from a week out sailing on "my" beautiful Priest Lake.

I slipped into my marina a few hours before sunset... I'd planned to leave early the next morning to tend to some personal biz. that seemed stressful to me at the time.

I finished the chores early enough that the sun had not quite set - and I decided to head home.

15 miles south of Priest Lake....

I "woke up" much later.... in and out of semi consciousness. I knew that something horrible was happenning to me, and I was more aware of my mortality really, than pain... but I could not find much to hold onto... at least initially. I couldn't see, I couldn't speak, and I could only hear undistinguishable sounds.... It was difficult to think.

I spent the next 6 months of my life in recovery. Surgical proceedures to replace and repair the damage to my head.... rebuilding my left eye socket, nose, and left cheek with many titanium parts and pieces. Maxilla and mandible (mouth) wired closed for 4 months to allow the repairs, and unrepairable fractures to heal. Regaining use of my previously partially paralyzed left arm and leg, then the therapy.... physical therapy, speech therapy, therapy therapy...

The simple thought that kept me grasping to.... my own life, was the basic desire to simply HAVE - and live, my life. To feel the cool breeze on my face again, to live more simply, directly, and thankfully.

Months later, I learned that my brother, Bruce, actually arrived at the hospital before the helicopter... I began to remember... he stayed by my side day and night, day and night... And he coached me, gave me simple positive images to try to focus on... Helped me want to live....

It forever changed me.

My mantra became....

The shortest path to happiness is to simply appreciate what and who I have in my life. The shortest path to misery is to want what I do not, or can not have.

From one of my life's most difficult challenges came my most valuable lesson.... and so, I truly am THANKFUL this Thanksgiving day.... and every other day of my life.

I hope that the 1300 pound moose that died on Hwy 57 that night 13 years ago did not suffer, and forgives me.... (I don't mind your laughing at my sentimentallity.... I laugh at myself too.... it is healthy....)

Happy Thanksgiving everybody!:yes: Baja isn't the only place driving at night is dangerous. Never drive at night in North Idaho. too many critters. Glad you pulled through djh.:D

Im giving thanks that I just found Noche Buena Cerveza at the New Ensenada WalMart. Just under 100 Ps for a box of 12.
Life is good and on days like this, it only gets better.
