Nomads and the San Diego Chargers!

Bob H - 12-20-2006 at 10:13 AM

How many Nomads are San Diego Charger fans? This team is just fantastic, to say the least. Super Bowl potential is there, for sure (to take it ALL).

12-2 is very good!!!

Love to see them finally return to the Super Bowl!

elgatoloco - 12-20-2006 at 10:35 AM

I have adopted them as my own. As a life long LA boy I am almost over the trauma of having my Rams (I was a season ticket holder for years) moved by the :dudette: who had her husband murdered so she could fire his genius son and then move in with her washed up opera singer boy toy and ..............I digress.

GO CHARGERS!

Over the years, I have had the priviledge of working for Alex Spanos, owner of the Chargers. Some years have been lean, some have been much better and all have been exciting in one way or the other. The Chargers seem to be in position to go all the way this year.

GO CHARGERS:bounce::bounce:

DianaT - 12-20-2006 at 12:20 PM

Is there another team other than the Chargers?:spingrin:

I also used to live in LA and will never get used to the idea of the St. Louis Rams---:fire: --- Oh well, I also remember when the Dodgers played on the other coast----gees, I'm old.

Will the Chargers hold it together for the Super Bowl?? Nine players made it to the pro-bowl---not bad.

As a decades old 49er fan, haven't have much to root for in the last few years. Having watched a few Charger games in the last few weeks, they seem like ,by far, the best west coast team to root for. They're playing good, exciting football. So, goooo... Chargers !!!

Cincodemayo - 12-20-2006 at 02:10 PM

The last few Seattle games make me wonder if they could even beat the local high school team....Grew up in So Cal and was a Rams fan till GF absconded the team to St. Louis. Damn I remember when Roman Gabriel was QB...Best times were at Chavez Ravine watching Sandy Koufax and Don Drysdale leave batters at home plate wondering what the heck just happened.

Dave, Martyball is history. Cam Cameron, their offensive coordinator, is now calling all the plays. Marty rarely interferes with his game plan, thus one of the main reasons for their success this year. We are calling it "Camball" now!

Although I was born in San Diego and have lived here most of my life my favorite team is the Redskins....with the Chargers a close second. My third favorite team is anyone else that is playing against the Cowboys...for obvious rivalry reasons. I am just thankful that the Chargers are doing so well....since the 'Skins have been pretty miserable........

 Not much this year. Their offense has been very offensive.

I like the Chargers. I saw them play early in the year and they looked so sharp and they executed their plays like they were a machine. They have a great team this year.

It's sad to see the current state of my beloved Raiders. My grandparents were the 25th season ticket holders ever of the Oakland Raiders. This was the first year in my families history that we did not get season tickets. (with the exception of the LA years) I guess we picked a good year to stop going.

I really think they should let us play the Lions next year for Thanksgiving. It's the only hope for Lions fans. We are the new Lions it seems.

Just for all you Raider haters. Here is a picture of some of the evil fans around my old seats. Last row at the 50 yrd line baby!

Why the Raiders are losers and I won't pay to see and NFL game ever again.

JESSE - 12-20-2006 at 11:43 PM

After putting up with years of miserable results, and "stars" like Ryan Leaf, and others, its great to finally have a winning team.

Now, tell the truth!

...Sorry, you should know that the 'real' name of the team is:

The Stockton Chargers....

A.G. (Alex) Spanos, the owner lives up here in mid-town Stockton and flys his big aircraft out of the Stockton Airport to the games each week - he brings VIP's along for the ride!

He has a nice, but unpretentious, home in a nice part of the city, and has hosted many Republican Political big wigs over the years, as they swing through Northern California. He's also a big contributor to The College of the Pacific, and many other local community projects.

I guess my point is, that he's an all-around good guy, and it's good to see 'his' Chargers playing so well this NFL Season!

Merry Christmas to all you 'Nomads' out there...and I'm going to sit back and enjoy the next couple week's worth of non-stop football games till my eye's bug out!!!!:O

I lived in San Diego during much of the '90s. I used to watch the Chargers games just so I could get reports from the 49er's game.
The Chargers actually went to the Super Bowl one year but were quickly and decisively crushed.

Have to admit, LT looks like the greatest running back since "Sweetness", Walter Peyton and Gale Sayers before him. Look out San Diego.....The Chicago Bears are coming again!

Walter Peyton was a joy to watch. One of the greatest ever.

I loved the 85 Bears... but I'm going to have to root for the AFC West since that is where the best teams play. ;)

That would be a great Super Bowl... but think about this. The Bears will most likely meet up in the NFC playoff schedule with the Saints. If the Saints win the NFC, well, then you have the Saints with Drew Brees -vs- the Chargers with Philip Rivers. Now, wouldn't THAT be sweet!

SoCalAl - 12-22-2006 at 11:21 AM

Well Charger fans,
i did expect the Chargers to make it to the playoffs this year. Especially with all those close losses last year. I mean we played most of the best teams and lost by less than three points to most of them. We also caught them or better said they caught us coming of their by-week. I think like six games were against teams that made the play-offs and or were division apponents and they were coming off by-weeks.
This year however it was a little softer schedule. Still we play some pretty good teams. Put any AFC West team in the NFC or even any other AFC division and they probobly make the play-offs most years. I mean the Chiefs did not make it last year at 10-6 and the Chargers were 9-7 out of the play-offs. The NFC will more than likely have a 8-8 team make the play-offs this year.
Unlike some of you I do not want to see a Saints vs Chargers Super Bowl. I want to see the Cowboys in their. You know Parcels vs Marty, T.O vs McCardel and Gates, Romo vs Rivers, Team America vs Team Chargers..
Chicago well I think they are a little overrated and are on the berge of a spanking. Don't believe me ask the Saints about the Redskins.
Philip River? No Ahh, just hand it off Baby and your time will come. There is just to much depth on this team for one guy to blow it. River will be a great quarterback in the NFL. Wait till next year for this guy.. For now we may get lucky enough with the depth on the team and the team unity to make it to the Super. Either way it has already been a great year. I thought they would go 10 - 6 but their commitment to win is relentless.
Come on Raven in the Championship, that would be my super Bowl....

GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO CHARGERSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!:bounce::bounce::bounce::bounce:

One other thing regarding the Chargers:

Earlier this season, I was in San Diego (Encinitas), where my brother lives.
We gave his wife fair warning that we wanted to watch the football game. She reluctantly went shopping, but before she left, she gave my brother a rather detailed Honeydo list.

My brother and I had a bet on; the loser does the chores on the list while the other pops a beer and points.

Of all the ignoble means of humiliation I've ever had to suffer, I watched the Chargers trounce my 49ers. To add insult to injury, when his wife came home and saw me doing the work and my brother pounding beer and laughing, she was not pleased.

I know....you guys aren't done with me here. I'll probably have to endure the Charger fans piling on and running up the score.

God! It isn't easy being a man.:(

oxxo - 12-22-2006 at 12:36 PM

Drew and Brittney Brees are friends of mine. I know them because I built a nice swimming pool for them. It is unfortunate that they cannot be part of the Chargers success this season, they loved their life in San Diego and still maintain a home there. They are both very nice and humble people. Drew insists on calling me "Sir." But it appears to be a "win-win" situation for the Chargers and the Saints. Drew is again having one of those pro bowl seasons. I hope to see one of those teams in the Super Bowl.....maybe in person!

SoCalAl - 12-22-2006 at 02:16 PM

Oxxo,
Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against Drew, in fact I was exicted whe we picked him in the 2nd round after LT..
Reason I would not want to see him in the Super Bowl against San Diego is I do not feel any type of rivalry towards him. The worst tthing to see is your team getting beat by someone you like. It's like when you follow two young boxers and root for both and sooner or later they meet, then you don't know who to cheer for. It happend to me with Oscar De La Hoya and Fernando Vargas...
If Chargers don't make I would definately support Brees... I still wonder why he did not take the money he was offered in SD... ??
When is enough, enough as far as paying these guys. I think if you developed good business skills you can always make more millions that way.. Oh well...

Bob H - 12-22-2006 at 02:59 PM

SoCalAl... I was very happy for Drew when he decided to take the QB job in New Orleans. How exciting, finally, for something like this to happen in that devestated area. What a plus for those fans to have Drew at the helm. My wife and I have been rooting for him all season. But, I still would like to see a game between the Chargers and the Saints. I think I would be happy with whoever won in the end.

The way it was reported to me is that there were some other contingencies that were not acceptable. The Chargers felt that the injury to his shoulder might be the end of his career and they wanted to add a lot of conditions. Sadly for the Chargers, that has proven not to be the case. The thing that strikes me about Drew Brees is that he is not a big guy. He is about my size, 6 ft and around 210. He definitely does not physically stand out in a crowd. Fortunately he has been blessed with a pretty good offensive line during his career. He is not the fastest quarterback afoot but he is quite agile because he is not real big.

Here's a little insider information....this did NOT come from Drew Brees. The L.A. Colosium Commission has talked to the Saints about moving the franchise to L.A. in a new stadium yet to be built. Evidently, the L.A. people are salivating about the prospect of bringing Brees, who is popular in SoCal, and Reggie Bush back to L.A. They feel the stadium would be sold out in advance for the next 10 years or more. Of course the Saints ownership is playing it coy. We shall see.

Bears are 13 and 3 and the Chargers are 14 and 2, with the best record in the NFL. Now we'll see what happens with the playoffs ahead. The Chargers can rest for two weeks. Wow, what a season.

Chargers were in the lead most of the game and only a mistake by the Charger allowed the Pats to get ahead... They were very well matched. If the mistakes were not made, the Chargers would have won.

How to get better for next year

Skipjack Joe - 1-15-2007 at 10:46 AM

1. Get rid of that Parker guy. Or at least give him a minor role on the team. Missed crucial 3rd down catches. Fumbled a kickoff return and made little effort to recover it. Lacks speed and is always completely covered. He seems to be a go to guy for the chargers and that's too bad.

2. Get a kicker than has accuracy AND distance. The chargers lost 6 points yesterday on kicks not attempted or missed.

3. Marty Schottenheimer? I don't know. He says in the post game interview "we just ran out of time". Well .... The clock management was really poor. He lost a timeout on that review that camera reruns clearly showed he had no chance of overturning. Another timeout was burned for no apparent reason, just to regroup the players. Those timeouts were crucial in that final drive. I don't think Marty made sound decisions.

Yes, I know - Monday morning quarterback and all that.

Minnow - 1-15-2007 at 11:31 AM

Jim Rome says Marty doesn't play to win, he plays not to lose. He called the outcome of the game. Marty is only going to get you guys so far, just like in KC, then his glaring weaknesses will show. It's too bad, it would have been nice to have a winner in SD again.

SoCalAl - 1-15-2007 at 01:58 PM

Come On... The Chargers had a great year despite the foul up at the end there... It is not about a coach or about one player, it is about a team effort. Everyone on the same page executing. Honestly there were not many players on the team with play-off experience except for LT, Gates, MaCardell and Edwards besides that Castillo (no), Merriman (no), Williams (no), Jackson (no), Parker (no), Rivers (no) the whole O-Line and the D-line. Come on people these kids were pick pocketed. If you watched the game the Patriots were playing dirty but on low pro, just enough to get a rookie upset and that cost us the game.
The true mistake came because they did not use the older players. :fire: When they used LT, he produced and scored, Turner produced and scored, Gates produced as far as Edwards, he was all over the place making exceptional plays. But the rest of the guys really blew it. I think these veterans as well as the coaches should have put the ball in the ands of the veterans and the game would be a different story. They did not throw to McCardell, come on, he is a sure hands receiver. The pats could really do nothing against Gates yet he got very limited action. Then what about LT and Turner duo the Pats looked confused trying to stop the run. Marty, Ilove the guy but he made the biggest blunder of his life when he let Cameron call 90% of the game. He did not even have the head set for 3 and 1/2 quarters, that was dome. I could see LT from the 2nd quarter where he knew the game calling was not right. These guys need to step up and say something. Philip was trying to repeat the Seattle fiasco with Jackson, if only he could hang on to the freaken ball. You cannot afford to drop the ball in the play-offs and for sure when you intercept fall the darn leather. All those are rookie mistakes, yes rookie mistakes but I'll be darned if they don't kick ass next year and then I want to see the Patriots with their poor excuse of a classy team come into our house... Believe me it won't happen again. Chargers will win play-off games for years to come. I just hope they give the coaching staff a chance to redeem themselves because they sure deserve a kick in the ass for this one but so do all the players. Marty is the number one coach for teaching basics, the players and coaches got away from that and it cost them the game. Naturally someone has to pay and it seems to me it will be Marty, hope not. :(

Alex L

Yes, Marty made mistakes. Add to the choices of bad ideas. With 11 seconds left 50 yard FG attempt or try to get 8-10 yards on a sideline passing play? Nothing open? Throw it OB. Duh! Marty chooses to watch the FG drop five yards short and to the right. Final result: 3 seconds left on clock. Hello!!!!!!!!

I am not advocating to do to Marty what happened to Saddam's cohorts, but...he should be released.

More monday quarterbacking

Skipjack Joe - 1-15-2007 at 06:45 PM

The local papers have all dissected this game to pieces and there is very little to add except for one thing.

I keep reading about how new england somehow stole the game. I guess you can see it that way because of the mistakes that the chargers made.

But the way those patriots marched down that field. They looked like an efficient, well-oiled machine. Unemotional, Brady just methodically completed those passes. In that way he reminded me of Joe Montana in the old days. When it came to crunch time there was no wasted effort. They made it look effortless. They're just a well coached team of veterans. The chargers on the other hand looked high strung, emotional, and inefficient. Relying on athleticism to compensate for the lack of confidence that a seasoned team has.

It's fun to compare Brady to Peyton Manning. Peyton knows how to score but not how to win. That was always the difference between Montana and Elway. Elway was the better passer by far.

I hope not

The Chargers will get to the playoffs again next year. Marty being gone would ruin another prime betting opportunity.

New England +5 was a gift. ;)

Martyball forever!

Firing Mrty would be a serious mistake.....
Dave: I'll give you what ever the point spread is the next time we see the Patriots:biggrin:

SkipJack Joe: I agree with you as far as the Pats keeping their composure through-out the game. Honestly I could see Brady never really thought he could win this game. He looked scared, the coaches as well as the players all played like rookies, except for the veteran players. Keeping the ball away from them was a serious blunder. Manning will win though and he is a better passer as you suggested. Patriots have won SuperBowls and teams that win SuperBowles arn't neceraily the best team that year, luck has a lot to do with it.
It's like horseracing, you can handicap the best horse each time but sh*% happens accounts for about 25% of the race and the there the favorite loses often. Like Chris Berman says, 'thats why we play the game" San Diego came up on the short end of the stick.
At the beggining of the year the same sports casters and odds makers did not give the Chargers even a shot at the play-offs. Heck early in the season they gave the Raiders a better shot. I knew better and truly I did not give the Chargers a shot at the SuperBowl but I did think they would go 10-6 or 11-5 with a shot in the play-offs. Given the Chargers was full of inexperienced play-off rookies and given the fact 90% of the team is coming back and we will strengthen the wide reciever spot and maybe strengthen the O-Line with depth, we should see a win in the play-offs next year, with or without Marty....
When the Spanos brought Marty in as coach, all they wanted was a winning team, a team that would win games and make the play-offs. Heck I say they got a hell of a deal with Marty at 3 million a year or less, he has done better or as well as holmgren (6 million a year) has done with the sea hawks and the Charger are well known and respected again. If only A.J. and Marty could just get along..
GO Chargers;D
