Otay Mesa to free road by Fox Studios

bigboy - 12-22-2006 at 08:02 PM

I'm crossing into Mexico at the Otay Mesa boarder crossing and would like to know how to take the new road to the toll road by the fox studio complex? As I understand, the new road intersects the free road.

Yeah, it does ---
When you hit the free road,[ you cant go any farther without going into a field] go right if you want to go north towards Rosarito or turn left for Ensenada. Get on the toll road at the first opportunity and have a safe trip.

When you cross @ Otay, take or follow the signs to Tecate Cuota or toll road (remember you want to go East), just before you reach the toll gate, to the right is the new Blvd 2000 that takes you all the way to Popotla or in other words to Fox Studios or Foxploration. You mention the toll road, if you want that, you have to make a right or north to Rosarito once you reach Popotla to take the toll road south(that makes no sense) or go left on the free road and access the toll road at Raul's just past Cantiles Dorados (before Puerto Nuevo). If you miss that, you can enter the toll road @ Cantamar or if you miss that, you can enter at Medio Camino or if you miss that you can enter @ La Mision. Now if you miss that, you will notice that there is no coast but you are going inland up a hill and by beautifull landscapes, if this happenes, just keep going and you'll discover a beatifull, no traffic, less travelled, road from days gone by, you will have saved a few bucks and enjoyed your"i'm sure safe trip.

Bruce is right about Mexican directions. Just keep in mind that if you keep going right, pretty soon you're going left.

Thanks for the information. One more question for the Otay crossing..................How do I find the entrance to the Otay sentri lanes. I was there last Sunday but because of the traffic (three hours) I couldn't afford to get out of line and look for the lane!

New Road Pros and Cons

Okay, just did the road from Popotla to Otay.
35 minutes from the sea to the border line.
That's about 10 minutes longer than Popotla to the San Ysidro border line.
BUT you save five bucks in tolls, remove yourself from the TJ shakedown gauntlet, and avoid the (usually) more chaotic scene of that crossing.

Impressions?
Getting to see all of that empty ranch land was great, and traffic was non-existent (70 the whole way). The only caveat is to make sure you exit towards Tijuana (it's signed) just before you hit the Tecate Cuota toll booth. Smooth sailing after that. Stay in the right lane, and you'll see the Garita de Otay sign.
ALSO, be prepared to see some gnarly housing projects that go on for miles. If you had a breakdown there you could be made to feel...unwelcome.

The SENTRI line is accessed by the second road to the east of the bridge that the regular line goes over. Coming from Blvd 2000 turn right at the Gigante store and go 6 or 8 blocks to the next major intersection, it has a light. Turn left and go a few blocks, you can see the bridge. Turn right just before the bridge, the street just before the entry at the bridge, this is just past a stop light.

Thanks for all of the information. Last weekend we took the Blvd 2000 to the free road and found it to be a great alternative to the SY road. On the way back we crossed at the SY Sentri but will try the Otay Sentri crossing next week!
