Major walkout at US Customs

fdt - 12-28-2006 at 02:45 PM

Just heard this on the local radio and I'm on my way to confirm, aparently the CBP officers walked out from their jobs at both San Ysidro and Otay border crossings, looks like they are asking for a pay increase and did not get it. Here is the best part, the gates are open at both border crossings and litteraly hundreds are just waltzing across like nothing, entire families in cars and on foot. The border is wide open and no one watching. Tooned into a local San Diego radio station and reporter said that aparently the only ones that walked out were the San Ysidro and Otay officers, Tecate, Mexicali and others are still manned, they are thinking of sending Border patrol there but then who will be watching the fence?

Cypress - 12-28-2006 at 02:50 PM

Those CPB officers might as well keep on walking. There are lots of folks ready to take their easy-ass jobs.:D

fdt - 12-28-2006 at 02:50 PM

All Tijuana buses and taxis are taking people to the border, there are no cabs in town. Tijuana police say that they cant do anything about it but keep order as hundreds go across freely.

BornFisher - 12-28-2006 at 02:51 PM

Hummmmmmm...... ;)

DENNIS - 12-28-2006 at 03:11 PM

Maybe the Minutemen will take it over.

DENNIS - 12-28-2006 at 03:15 PM

Yeah -----
These border rumors are worse than the army.

bancoduo - 12-28-2006 at 03:23 PM

The border cams show a normal backup. It looks like business as usual.

Plus no news anywhere of a cbp strike, or of people streaming across the border....

Homeland security would never allow this. they would send over the guard immediately if this happened.
i call bull sh*t.

villadelfin - 12-28-2006 at 03:42 PM

You got it Villadelphin, everyone fell for it ,good on you fdt now they know what today is.:lol::lol::lol::lol:

cabobaja - 12-28-2006 at 03:55 PM

Si, debe de ser dia de los inocentes. porque es dificil de creer que el gobierno de Estados Unidos puede hacer algo como eso.

Translation: Dia de los innocentes is the same as "April Fool's Day" in US. You think the US government is going to allow free flow thru the border?

thebajarunner - 12-28-2006 at 06:40 PM

Next time why don't you post this kind of stuff on the "Teen Perspective" section,
that is the age we were when we did this sort of thing.

David K - 12-28-2006 at 07:29 PM

In Mexico: Dec. 28 = April Fool's Day in U.S.

Ferna, it's only funny with a disclaimer under the original post...

Bob and Susan - 12-28-2006 at 08:15 PM

i thought it was very funny...

doradodan - 12-28-2006 at 08:32 PM

Baja Bernie - 12-28-2006 at 08:41 PM

Clever, witty, and a different sort of trip into never-never land.

How many posts?—in three only hours.

bajabound2005 - 12-28-2006 at 08:47 PM

The back up at SY today when we crossed southbound appeared to be pretty close to infinite. That was at approx 2:45 PM. Some lanes northbound were closed. Truth or not about the walk out. Personally, we think it would be great to open up the border!

Good One

DianaT - 12-28-2006 at 09:14 PM

Sure caught me offguard. Loved it!:lol::yes::yes:

SDRonni - 12-28-2006 at 10:20 PM

Well, I don't know what was going on, but we took that new road from Fox Studios to the Otay Crossing. The new road was fabulous, but very desolate! But we sat at Otay for about 90 minutes! I thought this was crazy........I have the SENTRI pass, but passengers didn't......The SENTRI lane seemed to be going slowly, too.....

thebajarunner - 12-28-2006 at 10:24 PM

Yesterday at 3 p.m. at Tecate....
XM said 1 hr. 10 min.
it took 52 minutes on the nose.
in occasional rain bursts, to boot.

JZ - 12-29-2006 at 02:46 AM

It was very clever and well written.

bajadave1 - 12-29-2006 at 05:45 AM

I have a Mexican friend that takes care of my fidi, FM 3, & property taxes. After telling her my DOB was the 28th, she told me my FM 3 Had been revoked. After the heart palpitations stopped, she told me what the 28th was.

Wait until April first............

Great One! Boy, Baja Runner sure is grouchy. Its all about staying young and flexible.

David K - 12-29-2006 at 04:44 PM

Yes, it was funny... but since this is an English/ U.S. forum, knowing the date meant 'April Fools' it would have not caused any anguish...:light:

I guess everyone who reads this will now remember to not believe anything outrageous a Mexican posts on Dec. 28th... any more than to believe anything an American posts on April 1st...

Bob and Susan - 12-29-2006 at 05:45 PM

this is a world-wide forum:saint:

yeah, I can be grouchy

especially when misinformation passes for real stuff!
I read this for info,
I read "pocho" for humor.
if someone asks for gas prices and the answer if 50cents a gallon is that funny- I think not!
even one day per year.
oh well, I am the guy that cancelled my Sports Illustrated subscription after they ran several articles on Sidd Fynch, the pitcher that had a 135 mph fastball... told it as truth,
weeks later said, "HaHa- big joke"
I told them that Mad Magazine was a good spot for that kind of factual story.

US forum? Should I or other mexican loged on posters not post something so mexican wich is Dia de los Inocentes? All I did was respond to someones "A newby as you would call" question

Any of you veteran nomads aware of today's Mexican holiday, "Dia de Los Innocentes"? From my brief searches, it has become Mexican version of April Fools. Hoping to hear of local pranksters, above/beyond the usual entertaining & fun posts throughout Baja Nomad.

Thanks for the forum, the information and all of my new neighbors!

The major thing I see here is who posted something outrageous was not mexican, it was FDT a US citizen :lol:
Come on just admit that you want a basket of candy Inocentre palomita.:lol:

Ferna, what I was saying is this forum is in English created by an American and read mostly by Americans so for you to not be surprised when you get negative comments about your fictional news post... BECAUSE WE (mostly) DIDN'T KNOW about Dec. 28 being 'April Fool's Day!

Now, go have a happy New Year!

Crusoe - 12-30-2006 at 09:38 AM

Just stop and think about it! Its not that far off from bieng a realistic scenerio.Good on ya --FDT.;)

burro bob - 12-30-2006 at 10:05 AM

I was taken in at first because I didn't read the thread until the 29th and hadn't noticed when it was posted.
I knew that the 28th was Dia de los Innocentes because I read the posts on this US based site. I think it was in the thread about Shari and her dancing house.
I thought it was a good joke. It was a lot like the plastic bait I see fishermen using, just believable enough to get you hooked but not very tasty once its in your mouth.

juanroberts - 2-19-2007 at 02:17 AM

I think the way it works in Mexico is that when the shop says it will be ready "manana," it does not mean tomorrow, rather, "not today."

In terms of "Dia de los Inocentes," there is a bit of story, and "La Ley de Herodes" or Catch 22, if you will, so I just quickly learned to just chill and take it in as a great way to learn about Mexican humor. Its a day where bosses and subordinates alike fool each other.

December 28 is a great day to buy the Mexican paper.
