Hello everybody, We're in Mulege and camping at playa Las Perlas. We are have a great time; it's just beautiful. When I get back, you'll wish I had made my vow permament! Just kidding. I'm too busy right now dealing with swimming and stuff like that to think about politics or other small matters. Take care everybody, Pack and Jimmy. :)

Ah yes! John Prine.... (my illegal smile.....it don't cost very much, but it lasts a long time)

Here's one for ol' Skeet. Now every time I listen to "Grandpa was a Carpenter" I think of you.

He was level on the level
shaved even every door
And voted for Eisenhower
'Cause Lincoln won the war.

Mulege Mission

Sr. Elefante. If you have the time and inclination, I would appreciate your taking a couple of pictures of the mission at Mulege. Thanks.

The Tongue of the Wise treats Knowledge Correctly but the mouth of the Fool spouts out Folly. Proverbs 15:2

Packoderm - 1-13-2004 at 02:08 PM

Sorry Sr. Academic, but I didnt read your message in time. We are now in BdLA.

burritomama - 1-13-2004 at 03:27 PM

Grandpa wore his suit to dinner
nearly every day
no particular reason
he just dressed that way...

Dave - 1-13-2004 at 04:01 PM

Well, he'd drive to church on Sunday
And take me with him too!
Stained glass in every window
Hearing aids in every pew.

I might be slow to warm up, but fans of John Prine are friends of mine!

Stephanie Jackter - 1-13-2004 at 08:08 PM

He used to sing me "Blood on the Saddle"
and rock me on his kneeeee
let me listen to the radio
'fore we got TV.

Dear Abby, Dear Abby...
My fountain pen leaks
My wife hollers at me and my kids are all freaks
Every side I get up on is the wrong side of bed
If it weren't so expensive I'd wish I were dead
Signed Unhappy

Bajabus - 1-13-2004 at 08:40 PM

yer flag decal wont get you into heaven anymore

an theres a hole in daddies arm where all the money goes

possibly one of the best songwriters out there

Stephanie Jackter - 1-13-2004 at 08:43 PM

Sam Stone came home
To the wife and family
after serving in the conflict over seas

And the time that he served
had shattered all his nerves
and left a little shrapnel in his knees.

But the morphine eased the pain
as the grass grew round his brain
and gave him all the confidence he lacked

With a purple heart and a monkey on his back.

There's a hole in Daddy's arm where all the money goes
And Jesus Christ died fer nuthin' I suppose
Little pichers have big ears
Don't stop and count the years
And sweet songs never last too long on broken radios.

I can't help myself.....

Stephanie Jackter - 1-13-2004 at 09:17 PM

Woke up this morning
put on my slippers
walked in the kitchen and died

And oh what a feelin'
When my soul went through the ceilin'
and on up into heaven I did rise.

When I got there it did say
John, it happened this a way
you slipped upon the floor and hit your head
And all the angels say,
just before you passed away
These were the very last words that you said.

Oh, please don't bury me
down in that cold cold ground.
I'd rather have 'em chop me up
and pass me all around.
Throw my brain in a hurricane
and the blind can have my eyes
And the deaf can take both of my ears
if they don't mind the size.

Give my stomach to milwaukee
if they run out of beer
Put my socks in a cedar box
Just getem outa here!
Venus de Milo can have Mars
look out! I've got your nose
Sell my soul to the junk man
And give my heart to Rose.

My Mexican Home

burritomama - 1-13-2004 at 09:57 PM

Mama dear
your boy is here
far across the sea
waiting for that sacred core
that burns inside of me
and I feel a storm
all wet and warm
not ten miles away
approaching
my Mexican home

Maybe not quite correct,

Chris Holmstead - 1-13-2004 at 10:07 PM

I am an old woman, named after my my other, my husband is another child that's grown old.

Just give me something that I can hold on to, a picture of an old rodeo...any one remember the rest or better than me?

Stephanie Jackter - 1-13-2004 at 10:52 PM

I am an old woman named after my mother
My old man is another child that's grown old.
If dreams were lightening
and thunder were desire
this old house would've burned down
a long time ago.

Make me an angel that flies from Montgomery
Make me a poster of an old rodeo
just give me somethin'
that I can hold onto
To believe in this livin' is just a hard way to go

When I was a young girl
I had me a cowboy
Weren't much to look at
Just a free ramblin' man

But that was a long time
and no matter how I try
the years seem to roll by
like a broken down damn.

Make me an angel........

There's flys in the kitchen
I can hear em there a buzzin
and I ain't done nothin'
since I woke up today

How the Hell can a person
go to work in the mornin'
and come home in the evenin'
and have nothin' to say.

Make me an angel that flies from Montgomery.......

You are good

Chris Holmstead - 1-13-2004 at 11:06 PM

You got the book or what? Check out Matraca Berg's rendition. I lost the Cd to vandals a year ago, but really good. I need to replace it, JP's and J. Buffet's greatest hits before I cross the border, OH! and Bonnie's double live Road Tested. Don't leave home without them.

Yeah. I do kinda got the book.

Stephanie Jackter - 1-14-2004 at 12:27 AM

I have most of his albums, now on CDs. I just about idolized the guy when I was 16 to 18 years old. I think he made me political more than any other influence. It was a pretty big bummer when I finally got concert tickets and he came out so drunk he could barely perform. I heard he kicked the habit later, but I always seem to have bad luck with concerts.

Many of the songs, I can still sing, front to back, even without the cheat-sheet, though. I've got a feeling that when I'm an old lady with Alzheimers, whose forgotten my kids' names and their kids' names, they'll walk in the room and still here me croaking out the John Prine tunes from my adolescence. I sing just like him, by the way!

I've got plenty of Buffet and Rait in the collection too. I'll have to check out Matraca Berg. Never heard of her. But most people still haven't heard of John Prine either, so she's in good company. - Stephanie
