Ok I have moved from So. Cal. to Arizona and have always gone into Baja through TJ and then down Mex.1 to Where ever. We will be going down to
Guerrero Negro and Abreojos so what would be the best route from Phoenix to get me over to the Pacific side around Ensenada I would love to avoid TJ

I think Tecate would be the best, quickest way.
No toll roads, no gridlock getting through Tecate, nice wine country road, then you are in Ensenada.

I think that Mexicali - San Felipe - Coco's - Hghy 1 is quite a few miles shorter, probably takes about the same time but is much more scenic. Also
depends on what you're driving.

Make the loop!
Go down thru San Felipe and Coco's (assuming that your are not driving a brand new luxury Detroit sled)
Come back thru Ensenada, Guadalupe, Tecate, then on over the Rumirosa to Mexicali, and then onward from there...
I personally like the road from Mexicali on to San Luis, then cross over to Yuma, etc.
Give it a whirl, you will like it!

Been down through San felipe & Gonzaga & Coco's corner before both directions not the way I want to go this trip. I am driving a Toyota Tacoma
4x4 so road condition is not the factor im worried about. I would rather stay on toll roads as much as possible It will be a long drive from Prescott
Az. and the drive from San Felipe south to Mex 1 can be vary grueling. I plan on driving straight through to San Quintin from Prescott.
I want to get over to the Pacific side as easy as possible and stop in San Quintin for the night.
Was wondering where to cross the border comming from AZ. and then what roads to take to get to Ensenada the easiest. Anyone from the Phoenix area What
route do you take.

I still think your best bet to get to the Pacific in Ensenada while avoiding TJ would be the 8 west to 94 west to Tecate, straight through the small
town as you make your way down to Ensenada. The roads are all fast and easy, with no big town traffic. I hope this helps. Have a great trip.

I have gone through Tecate on my way home once after looking at a map It looks like I would do better to go that way

Just a heads up...
Going south through Tecate is a breeze. But, a few weeks ago we came back from Ensenada and waited 3 (THREE) hours in line at Tecate to get back to CA
so don't expect it to be an easy northbound crossing.
Northbound, you're on your own!

that truck was stripped and burried in the sand at San Quintin just a mile or so up the beach from Gypsy's heading towards the point it was in the
tide zone. 2 mounths later when we were there again it was burried completly or gone.

Another option:
South on Mex. 5 to Mex. 3... go east to Valle de Trinidad leave pavement for the short cut west to Mex. 1 near San Vicente... The most direct route
south other than the using the road south of Puertecitos.... with the least amount of dirt road.
If no dirt road at all desired, and you are coming from Yuma on I-8, then go to Tecate and south to Ensenada from there... Unless, coming from Phoenix
you use I-10 to I-15 south into San Diego... then it is Tijuana, as before!

From Tucson we cross at Tecate. Although there are no toll roads this direction, I think you will find it much faster than going all the way to TJ.
Coming back friday night at 6:00pm the wait was only 10 minutes.

It has been 6 years since I was on it, but other Nomads have used it since... It is a graded road and had a smooth surface (ie. no rocks)... It has a
couple of steep sections, but 2WD should be okay in dry weather.
The road leaves Valle de Trinidad from the far west side... there are many roads but they seem to all converge on the one heading to San Vicente...
