Los Barriles vs Loreto/La Paz

Planning our first trip to Baja in March:tumble: and trying to figure out if we should rent a beach house for a week in Los Barriles or if we should split time between La Paz and Loreto, staying in hotels and such. Any thoughts on Los Barriles in March? Price doesn't seem to be much of an option, only b/c the houses ($600-$800/week) seem similar to mid range hotels for the 4 of us.
Anyway, any thoughts on the two options would be much appreciated by us first timers.

only 1 week? then forget Lorghetto and hunker down in Los Barriles. March is a great time and La Paz only just over an hour away if you want a day in the city. Be warned ... Los Barriles is very addicting!! Have fun.

Don't bother stopping in Loreto for fuel when when you pass by to "hunker down" in your enclave down south. Just keep going.

tsk, tsk "newbie", k1w1! what do you think you're accomplishing? Deborah and I left Loreto cause it was not to our "particular" liking. Have you been mistreated in Loreto by its people, either Mexicano or American. If not, what is your problem?

It's a great town to a lot of my friends...including Phil C. Perhaps he was hasty in his comment for you not to not stop, but you, in your response, were simply rude.

Trust me, I am neither a prude nor unwelcoming to newbies. But I simply had to address your comment.

I think you'll find, on this board, that most of us are enthused about all of Baja and "localism" has yet to become part of it. I do take offense to your referral to a town in Baja that you probably haven't had the opportunity to get to know it yet. As for going south as an old man, been there done that as a young man. You've got a lot to learn.

If your into fishing and its not windy Los Barillies and a trip to La Paz, but first trip I would base in La Paz take the Cabo Loop 1-2 days, go north 2 days and explore,much more to see and do in the La Paz area.

ok chill. Just trying to get your old blood boiling and more importantly assist the OP as best I see fit.
So, with one week only, would anyone advise the OP (Baja rookie) to just hit Loreto? c'mon get real.

You are probably right in advising someone from far away to visit the more populated and easier to get to Cape area for a limited first time visit. Your unfortunate choice of words to describe Loreto got me (and I'm sure others) going. Hope things work out for you down there.

Based strictly on your question it is very difficult to provide an answer. You named 3 distinctly different areas. What are you looking for? Fishing, kayaking, diving, shopping or just kickin it in a hammock.

I have no idea what prompted a Lorghetto comment. I have visited all of these areas and each has it own personality and I enjoyed each one for it's specific personality. If you let us know more of what you hope to find there are certainly enough Baja experts on this board to help you find it.

Los Barriles is a great choice, there are some qualifications to spend time there.... you must be nice, not boistreous(sp?)read noisy... drive slowly... by a few Pacificos for the locals... fishing can be fantastic and you have a lot of choices... disclaimer: I am not an agent for Verdugo's... but they have a nice hotel/motel on the beach in the center of LB.. there are large rooms with kitchenettes and it is only a one block walk from the mercado... walk to most dining choices... swiminig pool and palapa bar... check out their website... martinverdugos.com(?) google it... I stayed there about 20 times before I made the plunge....

So the Lorghetto comment aside, it seems like we can't go wrong either way. Based on Oldjack and others' comments though, it sounds like we are a good fit for Los Barriles. Just looking to relax, sit on the beach, eat good food, drink cold beer and margaritas, and take a few side trips - fishing, maybe see the whales (possible to do in March in the Sea of Cortez, or would we have to go to the pacific?), snorkling, etc.

Whales: There are whales in the SOC in March, here and there, and maybe you could see one, maybe. But on the other side March is the primo month to get up close to mother/calf pairs of grey whales. You will likely get to touch one or more, and you will definately see many. Lopez Mateos on Mag Bay has a regular industry to take people whale watching. Unfortunately, it's a long drive from Los Barriles. It's much closer to Loreto, from which it's an easy day trip.

Just one of the many things to do for folks staying in Loreto.:biggrin:

I think you've gotten good information for what you want to do. The best bet for whales in March would be to go to Magdalena Bay some four or five hours north of the east cape region. Sorry you had to endure the in-house "disscusion" of gramatical points.

don't tell anyone but there is a frequent visitor of the whale species that tends to play around the beach area in Los Barriles... I have sat at the bar at Verdugo's and watched many times... I have a PHD in Baja Technology with several minors(beer, tacos, hammock, beach play) so you may take my comments as empirical... one hour from La Paz +/- and one hour down to the circus(CSL)... take your time and enjoy the drive.... be careful.........

If you want Mexican culture, go to Loreto or LaPaz. Los Barriles grew up around sport fishing & wind surfing and is more like Gringolandia.
