Puerto Escondido

Juan del Rio - 1-8-2007 at 09:45 PM

Just got back from twelve days in San Somewhere and was passin' thru Pt. Escondido on the way to Loreto and did a quick, drive-by photo re-con. Has this place changed in a year (much like the surrounding Loreto area).

Thought you all would like to see some photos. Looks like they plan a big boat repair business. Maybe some other Nomads have info on the future program here...

...ok, and how much did they pay for this design?

Juan del Rio - 1-8-2007 at 09:54 PM

I have to admit, it's a pretty cool looking building and design, but Skeet would never approve. The old, Port Captain's Building in Loreto worked just fine for most of us checking in. This is for the "Super Cruiser's" that will be docking in 2011. Yep, it's coming no matter how much we hate it...

It's about time they did something with this area..... come'on

"It's about time they did something with this area..... come'on"

Better that they let the cement dissolve away (yes, it WILL take a long time), restore that beautiful beach, rebuild the restaurant that sat on the hill that is now a usually empty parking lot, and let the people have their favorite Sunday place back.

...yeah, but what's going on?

Juan del Rio - 1-8-2007 at 10:33 PM

There has to be a master plan somewhere/or someone has to know what's going on! Everywhere you look, there are signs of huge/big time, boat business.

I didn't take a photo of them, but there are hundreds of plastic, "floats" that look like they are going to make slips with 'em. There is so much new stuff sitting around, it's amazing that they are not already selling the Condo's on the canal in the rear.! Seems like at this point it, they would be a better value than the ones in Loreto Bay...

Is it true that....

CasaManzana - 1-8-2007 at 10:35 PM

....great pix- if you look at your second pix...right hand side to see the yellow steel travel lifts about in the center-- rumor has it that because of power lines they cannot get this yacht lift to the ramp area and the project is stalled. What say you????..T or F

If I were to bet, I'd said "F"...

Juan del Rio - 1-8-2007 at 11:06 PM

...just because if they didnt have enough power for the lift, they'd bring it in with generators. This is a huge dollar/peso/whatever currency you want. Little "Loreto" is now, BIG LORETO.

I go down about every six to eight weeks, and the changes are dramatic each time. Just like going from TJ to Ensenada, the growth is incredible for just a few months at a time. This project at Pt. Escondido just seems like it's a huge deal and I'm surprised that there hasn't been more "chatter" on the board about it. I definitely was surprised by the rapid growth in this port yesterday!

Yes, that's going to happen :lol:. Given where they are, better to use the area than just let it rot away, call me crazy. I spoke to the Singlar people when I was there in November, and they were moving full steam ahead with a full-on dry storage facility with travelift, etc., and if they carry through (yes it IS part of the Escalera Nautica), this will become the prime boating area on the Cortez - airport and all. Folks, bury your head in the sand if you will, but look at San Carlos, Sonora, and it seems to me that is a good way to go.

I thought the area was a protected marine preserve. That doesn't mean just the water - it's an entire ecosystem, including shoreline habitat. So, gasoline, oil, boat maintenance chemicals, dredging for large ships, waste of all kinds, "super cruisers" docking - and offloading people who will zip around in zodiacs and jet skis, maybe rent a jeep and tear up the hills, spewing exhaust and piercing the quiet with the whine of rec vehicles. So much for sustainable development (see FONATUR site). Ignorance prevails.

"McCarthy believes that once completed, no less than 52,000 American boat owners will set sail to those destinations and a good number will permanently moor in the various marinas. Moreover he estimates that 76,400 boats will be cruising Baja coastlines by 2010 and that by 2014 there will be 5.4 million nautical tourists."

Hey, 76,400 boats three years from now. Love that kind of optimism.

Does anyone know if there is still accessible camping at Rattle Snake Beach??

Excellent Photos Juan! And Since you mentioned my Name, I will Come On in For a Dip.
Yes , most of the information that I have received from my Connections confirm that this is the Future Sailing City of the Cortez.
No Juan, I kinda like the Structure, especially the Port windows, you could sure use a good Weapon, in case the Fighting boils over to Baja!!
So far I am impressed by the Construction in and around Loreto, except for the Loreto Bay Villages- From the Land and the Sea and the Air, that is th Uglist Development I have ever Seen. Square Boxes that look like Outhouses.
I certainly hope one of the Newbies would buy the House I have for Sale in the North of Loreto, Ideal price and with all that is going on would make an excellent Place to Live .
Not much problem unless you get 10 to 20 Thousand People right at the Port-Then where will the Water come from?

In the Past I have Counted as many as 35 WaterFalls coming off the Mountians after a Good Rain. Someone will have to figure out How to Catch it and Hold it for Use.

Progress in and around the Sea of Cortez.

Ship Happens...?i

Interesting tidbit of info...

Last trip home from LTO, (1/2/07) I sat next to a young gent who had just spent a month on his family sailboat, moored at Puerto Escondido. The family had changed their own mooring line to all chain out of concern for the way they were built.... (ROPE on the lower portion, and then chain from the end of the rope to the mooring bouy..!!?!!)

Several days before his departure, a very large trimaran moored near them (slightly upwind) broke free from its mooring bouy.... the rope (again, down near the base) gave way, and the 50 something foot tri was blowing down on their single hull ~ and the lee shore.

Fortunately for the absent owners of the tri, the family on the single hull acted quickly to fend the tri off, get aboard, and deploy the anchor to keep it from crashing into other moored boats ~ or the lee shore.

Sounded to me like the mooring bouys were constructed poorly...?

Just a heads up for fellow sailors.... If you plan to leave a boat there (or in any anchorage), make sure that you have a properly constructed and maintained moorage...

As we all know... ship happens ~ especially when you're too far away to do anything about it.
