MEXICALI — A high-ranking city police commander and two Mexican state police officers have been arrested in connection with the Mexican government’s
new crackdown on drug cartels along the border.
The three were identified Wednesday as Mexicali city police Subcommander Juan Ponce Gonzalez and state officers Rafael Salvador Cruzaley Rojas and
Jorge Antonio Heredia Alvarez.
Both state police officers were assigned to Mexicali.
Mexican Attorney General’s Office officials said the three were arrested as part of Operation Tijuana, the government’s latest effort to stop drug
cartels, specifically in the Tijuana area. The effort does extend to Mexicali.
Officials allege the three were involved in giving information to those connected with the Arellano Felix drug cartel regarding the government’s
cartel crackdown.
The officers have been ordered held for 90 days as their alleged criminal activity is investigated.
Operation Tijuana involves the assigning of Mexican military and federal police in battling cartels along the border.
Bloodshed tied to infighting among cartels has been on the rise while the Arellano Felix Organization has seen its leadership crumble.
Cartels have been fighting for control of the Tijuana and Mexicali areas.
