Sunrise in the Cactus Garden

bajajudy - 1-14-2007 at 03:29 PM

I must admit that I scoffed at the idea of a cactus garden but the one here in San Jose has some beautiful varieties. We were there a few years back for a sunrise summer soltice and I took these.

The road to the Montevideo painted cliff passes through some of the finest Baja desert cactus gardens! Visit it and San Borja during your stay at L.A. Bay!

Thanks judy - I am a cacti lover - my favorit are the pink fuzzy balls - would love to get some for my collection. HOW are they called? Sientific name? >f<

bajajudy - 1-15-2007 at 10:02 AM

Hey, thanks!
I dont know the botanical names of any of these although there are a few that I can almost read the signs next to them.
Here are a couple more since everyone seems to be enjoying these. One of the reasons they are so nice is the early morning sun

After pressing the reply button, you will see a browse button at the bottom of the reply box.
Use that to find the pic on your computer and upload it.
Hope that helps.

These are not from the cactus garden
This is the flower of the Agria. They must open overnight because it is hard to find one open in the daytime.

I took this up by the garbage dump in San Ignacio. It really is over exposed but I like it anyway.:P

BigWooo - 1-17-2007 at 12:13 AM

Golden barrels ( Echinocactus grusonii) are some of my favorites, especially when planted in multiples like photo #5.

I thought I was really clever to spot some at the 99 cent store and I bought up their entire stock of the tiny 2" pot size. But they're growing so painfully slow, it'll be 99 years before they're nice big globes.

Even if you don't want to spend big bucks for large specimen barrels, don't cheap-out like i did and at least start with medium-size plants so you'll be able to see some growth during your lifetime.

Beautiful, windgirl!

This is about the only thing blooming in my garden.
Upon close inspection, I was amazed to see that the tips of these blooms are blue.
Que bonito
