Netto Lucero, a local fisherman from Ejido San Lucas, South of Santa Rosalia, was fishing with another man out of Mulege in the stormy weather, when
his boat overturned and Netto was caught up in the net and drowned. The other fisherman with him was reported as being OK.
For those who are aware of current weather, the wind and waves were terrible that night, but the market has been good for sierra and the catching
has been pretty good the last few days. It is a tough balance to decide when to go and when not to go.

My condolences to the family of the fisherman, Jim. You perfectly summed up the dichotomy of taking chances at sea while having to make a living.
Fishing seems to run in the blood of the Lucero family. They are literally everywhere on the peninsula. I would love to hear the story of how the
fishing Lucero's came to be such a part of the fishing industry in Baja.

Minor correction to this. The mans name is Jose Ernesto Romero Mayoral.
'Netto'. He is/was my son-in-laws brother.
A good man with a couple of small children and a loving family.

sad that he died while earning a living. Does his wife and the kids get any

We have two children from this family who are always at the cove helping all the fisherman with our odd jobs and various chores. Netto was their
uncle which makes this a real sad time for the people of San Lucas Cove.

I was at the San Bruno "marina"/ harbor yesterday at around 11am and they had a recovery operation going on. Policia and Ambulancia on site. Ran into
Mario and he indicated that a panga had capsized and dos pescadoreos muerto. Think this could be the same incident? Or another fatal accident?
Never have seen the soc so rough.....30kts +.

I believe the incident reported by Posada Bush Pilot is the same. However, only one person died. There was a water taxi that turned around when they
say the panga overturn and they saved one of the fishermen.
The funeral for the victim is being held this afternoon.

I hope you're right. I can't imagine that the taxis were operating it was so damn rough. But they must know what there doing.

Well, between my spanish and the stories that have gone around, I think I finally have the story straight. Netto, officially Jose Ernesto Romero
Mayoral, was fishing out of San Lucas Cove and they were headed south to San Bruno area to pick up the nets set the night before for Sierra. A really
large wave hit the boat and even though they were headed into the waves (coming from the north), the wave actually flipped the boat. As the boat
flipped, Netto was thrown from the boat and struck in the head by the falling panga. That blow to the head proved fatal. The other person riding in
the panga was ok and was rescued from the water by the San Bruno water taxi that goes to San Marcos Island. Netto and his ex-wife were divorced and
the children lived with their grandmother in the United States. Netto lived with his Mother and Father in the village of San Lucas and the wake was
held this afternoon and the burial tomorrow morning, Wednesday, when the rest of the family members have a chance to arrive.
Netto was an uncle to two boys who are always on the beach helping the residents of San Lucas Cove by the name of Oscar and Raul.
So it is truly a sad time and all are deeply touched by his passing.

Here is a C/P received from Bridget Myers. Many of us here in San Lucas remember her kindly.
I would like to forward this information to all. My name is Bridget and I was Jose Ernesto Romero Mayorals wife for many years up till 2000. We were
fortunate to Have three beautiful children together. Franco Ernesto Romero, Letisha Elisabeth Romero, and Maximo Abrahn Romero. Netto also had two
children from a previous marriage. They live with their family in Guymas, Sonora. He was one of thirteen children. I think it is important to say we
took a niece into our home and he raised her as a daughter. Her name is Lupita and with much effort from Nettos mother (a saint) and Netto, that young
girl has a High School diploma and a good job. This is quite a feat for a society where most young women marry young and sacrifice education. Netto
was a hard working honorable man and he will be sorely missed by all. Our eldest son, Franco had dreams of going to reunite with his father when he
was old enough, and this certainly will devastate him. I am moved by all who have contributed messages in Nettos behalf. If perhaps I might ask for
emails from people that knew my children's father, I would be most grateful. I will be making a trip to my mothers, where the children live, so I may
tell them in person. It gives me great sadness to know that my kids will have perhaps a few letters and photos to know what a wonderful man, and
incredible fisherman their father was. I know my mother in law, Donna Quata, is in great pain and in need of her community now more than ever. Thank
you to all for your affirmations on the man that Netto was. Prayers do help for all.

Sad very sad....
When I read the first post I suspected it was Bridget's husband, Netto.
My wife and I meet him on varrious occasions due to the establishment and long term involvement with the San Lucas educational system.
I vividly recall seeing Netto and his son Franco walking to the pangas many years ago. Reminded me of a Mexican version of Adny and Opie going
fishing. I silently said to my self; the best known universal apprentiship, a devoted father and a admiring son, walking hand in hand to work.
Mrs. Miller & I send our condolences to all, but espeically to Franco, Letisha and Maximo for they have lost the guiding light of their lives..

We did not go to work today(fishing) because the weather is forcasted to be very rough..I am greatful to have the recources and information available
to be able to make that decision..
A sad post to read...I have known several pangueros who have lost thier lives at sea, all brave Men who are sorely missed. It always hits home when a
fisherman loses his life at sea...An honorable but tragic way to go.

A very sad story. Although I did not know him, I have gotten to know many fishermen at Bahia Los Frailes and can relate to the conditions they must
make a living in. As a sportfisherman, I only choose to go out when it is safe, but if it were my livelyhood I would feel the pressure to be on the
water when the fishing is best. God bless his family.

would like to go in a way that we love. Netto I'm sure loved the Sea of Cortez. May he be remembered by all.
