Wood Variety Availability in BCS?

CP - 1-16-2007 at 03:21 PM

We have been using Pine and Bannak to do the finish work (furniture, doors, etc.) in our home. We like Pine and Bannak but it sure would be nice to find some some Mahagony, Teak, Oak, Maple and other niceties that we had notb. Is there any lumberyard between Loreto and La Paz that might have any such stuff in rough cut or dimensioned?
Gracias,
CP

Just wanted to share this pic of our recently completed Bannak bathroom vanity and matching kitty-litter box.

Good question...I am a Master Cabinetmaker and have ask around and have always been told "bring your own".
Hope you get a better answer..

CP very nice job...Your skill level is great. Not sure what is on that nice wood edge, but it is the number 1 thing I have to repair in my business. You should have 4+ coats of "Good Stuff" (name brand) and sand and re-coat at the slightest blemish. It is a easy wipe on.

Thank you for the edge protection suggestion, Al. Is that a product available between Loreto and La Paz? Or is there something similar down here?
Thanks again,
CP

Dami must be proud of that caja de gato, CP. Very nice .

Dami was entirely indifferent. Which, considering the source, might be interpreted as passionately gushing appreciation. Ah, cats...

Bannak availability???

CP, is that wood type available in northern Baja (Home Depot-Ensenada), or is it specific to the south???

Bajaguy,
Sorry that I cannot answer that question - I have never shopped up north. We just came across this wood available in Cd. C. and went with it.

CP:

You do beautiful work!!! Inappreciative as she may appear, you have one lucky cat!

The different types of wood stocked in La Paz is pretty much limited to pine & alder. They don't stock any hardwoods. I did have a cabinetmaker tell me he had some oak available, but he'd special ordered it for a customer who'd cancelled & his pricing even in alder was off the charts!! I don't know how the local carpenters come up with some of the doors & cabinets I've had made after looking through the dismal selection at the lumberyards!! It's predominently low quality and....Uhhhhh....very curvaceous, which isn't typically a quality you want in wood! Even the "clear" (knothole-free) cabinets I requested & for which the carpenter had to special order the wood, ended up looking suspiciously like knotty-pine wannabes!:tumble: But unless you started with exceptionally good quality wood, it looks like you have the ability to turn a sow's ear into a silk purse!

Good Stuff is an urethane gel (very thick). It design is for butcher block tops. It availability is not wide spread, because of it's limited uses...I am finding more and more. I cannot remember the manufacturer's name. I have always been able to buy it at:
Hardwood Resource
988 Howe Rd.
Martinez, CA
(925)372-8171

Your best bet is to get the yellow pages out and call specialty Hard stores in your area. I doubt that it is available in Baja???
Another product called wipe on Polyurethane in a consumer product and being so it is very time consuming and I won't state the end product(finish) is great quality, because of the very thin coats. I will say Good Stuff has a low sheen and sometimes I will use Polyurethane in a high gloss only to match on some repairs as the last coat only. Wood beauty is what your are after not paint beauty. When it is shiny every imperfection shows also. There are ways to make the wood shine without making the finish shine....
Oops rambling again...
