Guess Where? Geologic Formation

David K - 1-18-2007 at 03:05 PM

Most of you regulars who follow my trip reports will know this, so I am asking the newer Nomads if they wish to play...
Jack Swords and Wilderone know this place very well...

Baja has some unique geology... Tell me as much as you can about this site: It's name, what it is, what does it do, how often does it do 'it', what is it made of, where is it, have you been there, etc.?

More photos to follow... no cheating!;D

I read about it on one of your trip reports.....something about a monthly geyser?

Hi Whiz...

Here is what I am seeking:

Tell me as much as you can about this site: It's name, what it is, what does it do, how often does it do 'it', what is it made of, where is it, have you been there, etc.?

Winner gets a 'got baja?' sticker:bounce::lol:

Here I am on it...

David K - 1-18-2007 at 08:49 PM

Wiz, you were correct... Can anyone add more?

Here's Sarah (12 1/2 y.o.) at the very top... I am telling her wouldn't be great if the geyser erupted and I caught it on film!

She wasn't amused!!

Ummm ... El Volcan and the Onyx Domes? It's been awhile since I took geology. Onyx I think is a form of silicon dioxide (quartz) that's desolved in the erupting waters and deposted on the surface and hardens in colorful bands.

I'll need to add that place to my must visit list.

Much better!

Roadside Geology and Biography of Baja California by John Minch identifies the El Marmol onyx type as Travertine... He incorrectly says there are hot springs at El Marmol and that the springs at El Volcan are hot. They are not... just very mineralized and come out with bubbles (soda springs).

In Joseph Wood Krutch's excellent 1961 book, 'The Forgotten Peninsula' in Chapter 3 (page 35-45) he describes El Marmol, El Volcan and the kind of onyx found here in great detail.

I thought travertine was calcium carbonate. Big difference. Now I wonder which it is.

There are many types of onyx, not even related... This variety is called 'Onyx Marble' &/or 'Mexican Onyx'...

By the way, if you guys would have clicked on my 'Baja Notebook' (link below my posts): http://community-2.webtv.net/drdrip/notes , you would have seen a photo of El Volcan and a link to the trip page...

I update my notebook at least once a month and it contains links and sites not found in my main web site (vivabaja.com) that might be of interest to some of you crazy Baja nuts!
