El Rosario firewood?

Slowmad - 1-22-2007 at 12:50 PM

I recall seeing firewood stacked in front of a store of some kind in El Ros'o.
Does anyone know if there is a dependable source in town?
Thanks in advance.

I don't recall seeing bundles of firewood for sale (leņa) in town... However, BajaCactus would have an answer for you if he sees this post...

Here's my map of town (the part along Hwy. 1), if you recognize the name or location:

Slowmad...

Sometimes local stores at El Rosario have them... however they are not 100% reliable.

Local ranchers use "Mezquite" wood for firewood... it is great by the way... if you need some, I might be able to get you some... just let me know when you are passing through and I could try to have it ready for you at BajaCactus.

Thank you Baja Cactus.
I sent you a U2U.
Woody, not into Nagasaki flameball white man fires.
Just a small oak or mesquite flame for my arrachera.
As usual, Nomads comes thorugh.

Woody
Just don't get caught with a pickup load of firewood. It is just as illegal for non Mexicans to collect firewood as it is to harvest lobsters. A small bundle, you might get away with if stopped by Profepa agents, a truckload will get your truck confiscated. Even Mexicans are supposed to get a firewood permit (rarely enforced).

i'm just the photog. the locals were doing the hauling that day. we bring our own selection of sun dried 4"x8" headers cut into 24" pieces. neatly arranged as the first layer in the truck and all you need is a hatchet to make your kindling, etc...

but thanks for the heads up. had no idea it was illegal to harvest dead cactus.:?:

I'm sure that Bob knows what he's talking about, but I thought the prohibition was against possession of rare materials like Palo Fierro. (signs at some retenes) They have so much more value for carving etc. than for leņa. That said, when my buddy Chico invited us over for Christmas Eve, the 8 month old calf BBQ'd over Palo Fierro was Da Kine!

Logs ready...

Antonio, the mesquite was a welcome addition to our trip.
For those who don't know, it is a VERY dense and heavy wood.
You need to shave small pieces with a hatchet, then it burns hot and fragrant.
Our arracherra turned out perfectly thanks to the mesquite.
Even had the ospreys salivating.

Also, I have now stayed at Cactus three times.
(Try to hit one minus tide swing each month in the winter.)
I'll be back in three weeks, guaranteed.
Love the place.

Thanks for everything Antonio y Manuel.
