Fly in guest finds huge megaladon tooth in Asuncion

shari - 1-22-2007 at 03:54 PM

We were so happy to have our first fly in guests arrive....:bounce:..and they sure loved our airstrip...nearly a mile and smooth as a babies trasero. I took them hiking and Brian hiked up a mountain where he screamed...(we thought he was hurt) when he found an enourmous petrified megaladon tooth....the most beautiful one I've ever seen. He was a very happy man indeed. We look forward to seeing Jamie's new baja book about flying.

capt. mike - 1-23-2007 at 05:14 AM

i can't see the scale clearly - how long is it Shari?

are there more to be had regularly or is this find a 1st?
who's Bellanca Viking? or was it a Super Viking?

Hey Capt. George El Vikingo - you should get a Viking, fast planes, but fabric fuselage means hangar a must!

TMW - 1-23-2007 at 08:05 AM

Very nice find! I work as a paleontologist and have yet to find an extinct GW tooth.
Lots of other cool finds lie Saber tooth cats, Dire wolves, Sperm whale teeth, an almost complete giant ground sloth, many first occurrences of specific animals in the southern California in a specific time range…..But, I still want to say I have found a Meg….

Not quite that old David, only 1.8 to 5 million years ago for the Carcharocles megalodon (although some still believe that these 50 foot monsters still lurk in the deep sea....). Yes, sharks have been around since the dinosaurs (they went extinct 65 million years ago), and before, just not the giant Carcharocles megalodon.

Actually, these big teeth are put on the mantle or in a case. Who in their right mind would want to wear a several pound piece of jewelry around their neck???

Jewelers usually go with the smaller 1-2" teeth for the necklaces and the 1/8-1/4" ones for earrings.

And yes, good, large specimens are sold for $100's

Sounds like there is going to be a run on Asuncion.:yes:

That was one exciting find. :tumble::tumble:

I know some fossil hunters. They can be a ruthless, greedy bunch and if they find out about the existence of "virgin" beds little good will come from it. JMHO.

Miinnow, when I visited I found two arrowheads as I meandered down a path. One was of crystal, the other of obsidian. They were just lying in the road...and I was really excited with my find!

Next time I'm in the area and fall off my motorcycle I'll stay on the ground a little longer and look for arrowheads.

BOY...I get excited when I find a nice seashell or shiny rock. I'd probably wet myself from the excitement of finding one of those!!! It's such an interesting thing...how Nature has a way of revealing things. Rains, winds, waves, hurricanes, earthquakes, and more can have that effect.

On the beachs here in Carlsbad, or in Baja, or anywhere else...it's always very interesting to see how waves and tidal actions can change the look of them so drastically from one day to the next.

I'd like to be on a Florida beach after a hurricane and find some treasure, like others have.

:wow: Great find. For what its worth to those who look there have been several found not too far away at San Juanico in the cliffs by the shore. One person who lives there has incorporated them into his shower walls. The ones he found were black unless that is from a finish he applied when he implanted them.

Minnow - 1-24-2007 at 11:56 AM

The color isdependent on the type of elements present when the tooth was fossilized.

Black is the most common color

Minnow is right. Most M. Carcharocles found in this country come out of river sediments in N Carolina. The minerals there yield rich black and brown specimens. I have a few brown or tawny colored teeth but far and away most are black. My experience with these theeth shows me that the lighter the color, the more brittle they are, hence large complete intact specimens of this color are more rare.
Although may largest Meg tooth weighs in tad over 5.5" , I've seen a number over 6" that fetched considerably more than $300 usd. Their are many dealers and sellers around but buyer beware, many lower priced teeth are cheap for a reason. Usually cracks, chips and worn or missing serrations will lower the price substantially.

One contact I have in Fl sells broken or incomplete teeth by the pound. I love em, they are beautiful things of many colors shapes and sizes and represent a vast cross-section of the life in the area 1-30 million years ago. It's fun to give them away.
My favorite teeth are the early Great White teeth. They evolved from the megalodons some 3 million years ago. Their teeth have a smaller bicuspid on both sides of the tooth making it look like smaller teeth between them.
If ever at Sharks restauant look on the wall behind the bar and you'll see many teeth.

Wow sharks, awesome collection...I have a pretty nifty one too with several different kinds of teeth. A couple years bac I found a big megaladon tooth too, not quite as nice and shiny but a bit bigger...I hiked for several hours and didn't find diddley squat and then on my way back to the car it was lying on the path...Boy was I excited but this big ones are very rare now but I still enjoy getting into the arroyo to hike as you never know what you will find. there are also some awesome buried skeletens with rib bones showing etc....it's just a really neat area....and don't worry I'm not telling exactly where but there are miles of this arroyo where people find all kinds of cool stuff. Oh yeah, by the way behind our house is a site where obsidian arrowheads were worked and there are lots of chips and like Zoe said you can still find some intact ones....the gold nuggets I'm definately not telling you about!!
