"Men In Black" checkpoint at La Fonda

thebajarunner - 1-24-2007 at 09:20 AM

Monday we got stopped on the northbound libre, just short of the entrance to the cuota.
Very serious stuff! Pull over, turn off the engine, open all the door and trunk.
No smiles, not much comment.
Most interesting of all, they were all Mexican Navy, not Army.
I asked the guy if he was Navy (duhhh, the insignia looked a lot like mine when I served in the USN) and he just nodded and would not make further comment.

bajarunner: we saw those guys as we headed north on the toll about 1pm. wow. they looked serious. were you on your way to the border? which border crossing did you take? we came in through otay on friday, took the b2000 and on monday decided to go to san ysidro. could not get in line from any street for san ysidro. all closed by the police. made the run to otay, it was a 1hr,30minute wait. EVERYONE after us must have done the same because the line behind us grew to be very long, very quickly. it wasn't fun. next time we make a short trip like this we will cross san ysidro at 10pm on monday.

ahhhh, you just clarified the mystery of the border on Monday,
XM at noon said 30 minutes at Otay and 1 hr. 15 at San Ysidro, so we too took the new route- first time- and got to Otay and spent exactly 1 hr. 15 in that one.... very frustrating, when you expect a quicker trip.
Anyway, the new route is very interesting, but very long and tedious compared to the straight shot up from Rosarito to San Ysidro.
And, we had one car that went ahead earlier and crossed at SY but had to make a downtown detour to get to the line.
(and these were first time visitors, driving my Honda, with a hand drawn map as to "how simple can it get" to find the border gate)
But, they made it.

just read a post from brian on another forum. he crossed northbound at san ysidro monday at 2pm, his wait was 45minutes. i guess timing is everything.
i also told some friends the same thing about finding the border, no problem heres a map!!! they toured tijuana trying to get in line. they also made it and have come back twice.
