Is there room at the Inn?

rebrobin - 1-27-2007 at 08:23 AM

We have been planning a Baja trip since Dec. and finally are ready to go. Is there room in the campgrounds for motorhomes in and on the way to Mulege area? thanks for any help for Baja first-timers.

Maybe some more specific info so we can help?

When you say 'room for motorhomes', are you asking if the campgrounds are all full (no, not likely but which ones?),

or if your rig is too big for campgrounds (if it is, don't use it, the Baja highway is too narrow)?

Note the white line is the edge with no shoulder and usually a steep drop off!

every place has room...

don't worry about where to park once you get past ensenada.

take any size motorhome
i see the "bigest monsters" make it ALL the time

i think david is afraid of anything larger than a toyota:lol::lol:

Just drive slow
I even... sometimes stop when a "extra-large monster" passes
I really don't care what other drivers think...
they can pass

good luck

Rebrobin,
I know that we would not want to take a large motorhome or trailer down the Baja highway, but lots of people do it---some only once, but others do it over and over.

It really depends on how you feel about narrow roads with no shoulder. In some of the flat areas, it seems to keep getting narrower as the sides break off.

With that said, for finding campgrounds for your rig, I might suggest the Camping in Baja Book by Frank and Teri Church---not always up to date, but good for finding places for Motorhomes and trailers.

Have a Great Trip.

It was taken between El Rosario and San Agustin

I heard that AAA has a new travel book out on Baja. Anyone seen it yet? Anything about camping in it?

David K - 1-29-2007 at 07:46 PM

This is the 'new' guide, but it is 2 years old... c2004.

I would guess that a new map would come out first, and that hasn't happened yet... I don't think?

It is a very good guidebook... One of the best (but like most Baja guides it stays on paved and graded roads mostly).

Thanks for all the replies, we've got church's and Baja lonely planet guides. Our moho is 34' and I'm prepared for the narrow roads. I was worried about all campgrounds full and having to look for a boondock spot, which we don,t mind but not in Mex, based on most recommendations in this forum and others. We are looking forward to the adventure, B

The top photo looks like the curve just south of Colonet.

Nope, it's where the highway is narrower, south of El Rosario.... Near Hector's Monument...

Good Eye Opener David, Guess it'll be white knuckling time pulling a 31' trailor next Monday. May bump into SoCalAl at Daggetts.
Your photos with the trailors gives me a good idea - I'll shadow a trucker or another RV on my way south. Hope they don't pull over to let me through:fire:.

I hope you have a great time... Just take it easy with no schedule to stick to... When you cross the border, remove your watch and enjoy 'Mexican Time' (ie. whenever it happen, it happens) and 'Baja Time' (ie. eat when you are hungry and sleep when you are tired!)!!!:bounce::bounce:

Seems that the amount of RV's in conception area is noteably decreased from past years. Also, the type of campers has changed. Three years ago there was nary a generator at Requeson but this year it was a noisy mess with only 2/3 the campers. None of the small untended beaches are being used this year. No one at most of the gorilla camping spots either (we looked from the boat). Very different this year.
Also slow in Mulege.
I went to the Lavamatica twice while we were there and did not have to wait for a washer or dryer at all !! That is a first !! Only one or two other gringos in the place at all !!
Santispec has changed with the burning of the restaurant and the demolition and yard sale of many of the palapas. People were buying solar panels and propane refrig's and palapa roofs etc.... looked like a post huricane looting !
