Tres Virgenes

zforbes - 2-1-2007 at 02:01 PM

I've been curious to know more about who the three virgins were/are. Can anyone tell me more about how the name came about?

It's a great question... and I cannot find an answer (yet)!

I checked several of my books and the Internet...

Here is a 360 degree pan cam of the volcano: http://virtualguidebooks.com/Baja/BajaSur/EastOfSanIgnacio/V...

Thanks, David

I tried googling the answer, but no luck. I'm sure someone knows...but if not you...WHO?

Sounds like a Christian/mission derived name(Virgin Mary, Virgin of Guadalupe).

Yeah, now that accounts for two but not the third one.

I have received an email back from the author of Baja Legends, Greg Niemann... Unfortunately, he never discovered the origin of the name.

Probably Spanish explorers in the gulf who saw three volcanic peaks, and they wanted to find a land full of virgins!

I like the old padres story

and I wonder who those three special virgins were. Are there any other folk and/or religious references to three virgins?

I think Spanish explorers/sailors put map names on the things they saw from ships (like Calafia, the mountain ridge above Loreto that looks like a women in repose). I'll do some research but it looks like the first to see the area from ships would be Ulloa, Ximenez or Alarcon --- Alarcon was the first guy who went up to the Colorado delta and he's the likely suspect.

Hmmm cool question, I'll send off an e-mail to my Wifes uncle, Hes written quite a few great books on the cave paintings and history of Baja. I imagine if anybody knows then Harry would know, or at least point me in the right direction. I think hes coming out with a new book soon or maybe its already out...

Where did you find this? It sounds like a great story with more to it.

And that is as much as I could research right now, because I have an appointment with a hammock.

Aha...a much different take on the word virgin...and what will you be dreaming of during your siesta?

Sisters
