FARASHA - 2-3-2007 at 09:34 AM

celebrate VALENTINES DAY IN BAJA?.
With all the advertising starting here, I wondered - do you OR not.
Is it custom in Mexico? AND how do all the Nomad's enjoy this day? What goodies, OR SPECIAL TREATS, beside flowers is your sweetheart getting?

I have not had the pleasure yet of spending Valentines Day in Mexico. St Valentine was a Roman Noble who is said to have refused to denounce her faith in Christ and was devoured by lions. I have had my share of devouring by lionesses, but no Mexican Valentine stories yet. I'll let you know after the great day!

I see lots of preparations taking place for this day. Hearts, flowers, candies, the works. I have yet to find good chocolate in Mexico, save for that used in the chocolate drink used for breakfast here. That is delicious!!

I have not yet experienced Valentine Day Amore but did have some really good somores the other night, does that count?

Love!!! What a great thing to devote a day to, maybe we should consider prolonging the holiday to at least a week.

Party hearty Serina

HI Sirenita - so you PARTY? Big Dance events, you say! Hope you get lots of Sweet, and a have a great time!!!

I agree with IFLYFISH - it should be celebrated not only for 1 day, better a day per week!

SHARKS - Sees chocolate? that a special brand?

In México (you know how we are) we celebrate the entire month of February, it is called "El Mes del Amor y la Amistad", the month of love and friendship, Feb. 14 Dia de San Valentin is called Dia del Amor y la Amistad, so everyone showes theire signs of love and affection that day not just sweethearts, even though it is special for those in love or those under said influence. Those that are anywere in México this month can see the stores are dressed with red hearts and decorations, the radio does'nt stop advertising something to the effect. As for the question of chocolates, there are plenty and incredibly good, Sees IMHMO is far behind some of them http://www.cacaochocolate.com/
This one is close to our home and Mrs. ferna loves it.
And how is this

Hey Youflyfish

You are right.

Some experts state that it originated from St. Valentine, a Roman who was martyred for refusing to give up Christianity. He died on February 14, 269 A.D., the same day that had been devoted to love lotteries. Legend also says that St. Valentine left a farewell note for the jailer's daughter, who had become his friend, and signed it "From Your Valentine". Other aspects of the story say that Saint Valentine served as a priest at the temple during the reign of Emperor Claudius. Claudius then had Valentine jailed for defying him. In 496 A.D. Pope Gelasius set aside February 14 to honour St. Valentine.

Gradually, February 14 became the date for exchanging love messages

I recall the story from the perspective of the girl, whose love was lost in the tragedy of this story.

There goes the long term memory. Adios, you were a good friend.

Now, given that there are indeed good Chocolates in Mexico, we may have to prolonge our stay.

By the way. I see now cafe's and coffe bars in various towns. I had a cup in La Paz as good as anything I have tasted in the Pacific Northwest, and that's saying a lot.

I was wondering if any of these places made Moca with Mexican Chololate. You know, the kind kids drink for breakfast. The one with cinnamon and Sugar. I love Chocolate and coffee, I don't know if they have it down here and if so what I might call it?

Sorry for hogging your post here.

I er, hmmm, want to give my valentine a nice coffee with Mexican Chocolate

El Dia de Amistad Y Amor is muy special for my husband and I as it is our anniversary too...sort of, it's when we changed from being friends to lovers! It is a truly wonderful holiday here as everyone hugs everyone they see all day... so even thoes who don't have sweethearts still cash in! by the way, it's usually a "hug and a handshake" here...that's why after the hug they stick their hand out.

bajabound2005 - 2-4-2007 at 07:09 PM

Okay, Nomads, I need your help here! I was HOPING Valentine's was celebrated here. We teach English in a rural elementary school. We only do it once week but it does give these kids a head start (we hope!). I was thinking next week we'd do a "craft" project of making a Valentine for someone you love. All your advice and suggestions are welcome - just remember we are teaching English! I tend to speak in Spanish to the kids which pretty much undermines everything I'm trying to do in the classroom! But, we'd love to hear your ideas -- oh, we are talking about 3rd graders by the way! Sireneta?? Are you there?

FARASHA - 2-4-2007 at 11:54 PM

bajabound! -NOW that is a great idea, can't figure really the age of 3rd Graders ( different schoolsystem here in Austria) - so tell me age and I could come up with some ideas ( have 2 nephews and 2 little nieces).

Skeet/Loreto - 2-5-2007 at 07:53 AM

Farsha: The Care Asada at El Nido is Special- Domingo uses Sonoran Beef, it is done just right. The Best I have ever Had !

Phil S - 2-5-2007 at 08:24 AM

Farsha. For years my cousin who loved El Nido steaks would bring down for the winter, many two dollar bills, and each time he would go to El Nido's to eat, he'd walk into the kitchen hand the "big guy" (can't remember the name) a two dollar bill and say, "I'd like the best T bone you've got". And he always felt he did get it. Actually over the past 15 years of eating there, I haven't had anything I'd consider just o.k. Skeets right when he said, "it's done just right"!!! And back to the subject of Valentines Day. I always hide a 'neat' valentines card in my suitcase, and put it on Wendys bedsite table early in the morning of the "special day". I usually fix her breakfast in bed (if I can get downstairs quick enough to do it before she gets up) and for dinner, she gets her choice of whatever restaurant in Loreto she would like. Which is either Mita's or El Nido or Mexico Linda's. She also likes The Gallery on the Malecon. We've been experiencing that one now for about two years that it's been open. No disappointments yet. Happy Valentines Day. Viva la mujer's

FARASHA - 2-6-2007 at 12:55 AM

That sounds like a really nice Valentines Day PhilS.
Thanks for Info on the Restaurants - will give it a try next time in Loreto.
And will take up on the Dollar Bills -, I'm a spoiled Brat, when it comes to food ( like - rather nothing then to be sorry), and it's amazing that this Bakshish thing works almost everywhere!

My Valentines day will probably look like this: up at 5:30am, drive to work, after a 12hours shift - driving back home, shower, supper, hit the sack!
Let's see if it runs different  >f<

Farasha: I think they are like 8; so far I've come up with a Valentine's Bingo Game...not sure how that's going to go; talking about family members (names like mother, father, grandfather, etc); have them make a Valentine in ENGLISH for a beloved family member...30 3rd graders makes you want to run out of class at 12:30 and have a serious martini!

FARASHA - 2-7-2007 at 11:06 AM

bajabound - How about that - kids can collect shells and flat small pebbles from beach (and whatever they find there and is small and flat enough)
Then you let them create collages on a small board ( could be anything just firm enough- ie cardboard ) creating artistic pictures ( could be hung on the wall then) maybe leave small areas free - for gluing photos in it, or make combinations with drawings. It could be made like a competition - best PIC earns prices, good for creative and bigger kids.
Or glue it on small picture frames, Or on top of any small boxes ( filled with sweet afterwards) - thats for the rather restless or smaller kids good, which have a shorter attention span.
Kids loved it when I introduced them to collages - free creativity - anything goes!
With shells they could also make wind chimes - or mobiles mixed with other materials.
I know it is not EASY with having control over so many kids - it is like to keep a bunch of fleas in order and under control. Worked for couple years in an orphanage!
But you seem to enjoy this - otherwise you wouldn't bother -right??!! Keep me updated how it goes! >f<
