This is probably a stupid question but can we bring extra fuel (in jerry cans 15-20 gal.) without a problem at the border or should we wait and fill
them up after we cross the border?

fill um later...lots of stations
avoid any conflict
gas weighs 8# a gallon
20 gallons = 160 pounds

Legally your allowed to bring one 5 gallon can. I've had two at times and never been questioned but I have had friends who were told to get rid of it.
Best to fill them up after crossing and it is also cheaper.

I've had them tell me even ONE 5 galloner is not legal.
When I had a gas boat, I used this ruse. I'd carry about 6 cans down and fill 4 of them and put them in the center of the bed so that you had to climb
in the bed to touch them. When asked if they were full, I'd lift the two empty ones and say, "sin gasolina". It worked both times.
Nowadays, with the price of gas in Mexico about the same or cheaper (and of much better quality that in the past), it isnt really worth the effort.
That wont stop me from complaining about the ridiculousness of the rule, of course.
