Birds and windows

In the last few weeks we have multiple birds fly into our windows. Mainly doves, of which there seems to be a large number this year. They hit the windows with such force, that their crop kind of explodes and leaves moisture and gravel all over. And needless to say ,also kills them. The opposite wall to those windows is an inside wall with no windows, so they can't have the notion to fly through. Anybody has any idea what could cause such destructive behavior ?? Very much more so then in years gone by.:?::?:

We also have 2 fountains which of course attracts many birds. But we also have these for years.

I use to have this problem with my daughter. I solved it by putting stickers on my sliding door. Not pretty but it prevents a broken nose. Sorry I can't help you with the birds.

Hang some kind of attractive ornament in the window, there are some nice stained glass ones in the shape of hummingbirds, flowers etc. Even some transparent decals that look like stained glass. Or my best method: Never wash the windows.;D

That's sad. Why do they do that? Must be some kind of detractant which would work. Let us know what you come up with.

We've had the problem in a carport. The birds thought they could fly straight through. My wife took Hobby paints and painted flowers on the two problem windows. No problem since.

At one time, there were translucent decorative decals available in the variety stores, but I haven't seen any in years and nobody I talk to remembers them. If anyone knows where they're available, I'm interested.

I always thought it had to do with spring and mating season because it seems to happen more often then? Maybe that's where the phrase "bird brain" come from!

bird bash

Guesses as to the reasons for the crashes abound; reflection, pass through, light, dark, etc. Birds are hard to interview when sound, harder yet when smashed.

The decals on the glass do work!

Don Alley - 2-7-2007 at 09:34 AM

We've had a fatal crash or two into the large back kitchen window. But more often they fly in through the door. Paula says it's not nice to turn on the overhead fans when they perch on them.

I've managed to remove them without any harm. Small birds, recently a dove, a cardinal once, hummingbirds. I'm waiting for a buzzard to fly in someday.:o:lol:

Here's a visitor that came in through the back door, then out the front doors to the enclosed front porch where he wants to come back in. He wants to ride on the fans.

While on the subject of birds...

Does anyone in Baja put out feeders for hummingbirds?

Oso - 2-8-2007 at 06:16 PM

We're not technically in Baja, but we can see it from here. We maintain 7 feeders around the house, use up about 10# of sugar per week in the winter when the migratory ones are here, maybe half that in the summer. We add a few drops of red food coloring. Not really necessary, but helps attract them, is harmless, and helps us see when the feeders are empty. Right now we see hundreds of the little boogers every day, maybe a dozen varieties.

backninedan - 2-8-2007 at 06:17 PM

We put out two feeders here in Loreto. There are times when you can count up to 20 hummers.

vgabndo - 2-8-2007 at 10:13 PM

I guess its on topic...

I still LMAO at the Windex commercial with the two Ravens closing the sliding glass door and smashing the human's nose.

One tactic that has proved very effective to stop birds of all species from flying into house sides, large glass doors and windows etc., etc. is to buy those blown up bright silver hearts and ballon type objects at these nic-nac party stores and put them on a short teather and tape or tack them to your surface. The birds will notice their own reflection and veer off. It has proved 100% effective.:light:
