Baja orphanages

marla - 2-6-2007 at 03:53 PM

I'm going in a few weeks down to El Faro orphanage in Tijuana with an organization called Corazon de Vida based in Irvine. I plan on doing a story about orphanages in Baja and the thousands of children who live on street there. Apparently this charity helps support 14 orphanages. If anyone has anything to share on this topic I would be interested in hearing it! Also if anyone is aware of any academic research being done on this issue. Thanks!

Marla,
I don't know about that organization....but a well known off-roader, Malcolm Smith, is also involved in establishing an orphanage in Valle de Trinidad....and might broaden the scope of such programs which are not "administration-heavy"...

This organization is A-One!!!
It was started by some of 'my kids' that were raised at the Door of Faith Orphanage in La Mision and now want to give back something for what they received.
One of the founders, Hilda, is the sister of one of the four boys that grew up with our family here in Central California, and Hilda and all the kids spent a lot of holidays and vacations with us.
I am so proud of what they have accomplished!
If I can be of assistance let me know.
We are currently working with Rancho Santa Marta, at San Vicente, a relationship that goes back over 30 years, and with the little Agua Viva in rural Maneadero, a relationship that we started just last year.

We have just recieved the info on this but the Scorpions Off Road Search & Rescue Group are looking into working with this group in the future to try to give them some support.
I'm sure they would also be very happy to get any good PR they can also.

Is this Oasis not the same one that Sundog posted the links to videos that Channel 10 news is Investigating for child abuse? Amongst other things? Sounded to me like it is pretty bad setup and ad things going on there.

David K - 2-8-2007 at 10:21 AM

The place Malcolm supports is near San Matias, east of Valle de Trinidad on Hwy. 3.

I don't think Ch. 10 would drive 150 miles in Mexico, for any report.

Watch 'Dust to Glory' to see the place...

marla - 2-8-2007 at 12:36 PM

Thanks! I'll check it out. I am going down there Feb. 17 on a bus from Orange County. This organization Corazon de Vida runs bus trips to the various orphanages it supports twice a month that the general public can take, from LA, Riverside, OC and San Diego. People go down, play with the kids and bring food and diapers. After I do my story, if all is well, I'm thinking I will bring my own kids down and let them help the kids down there.

David K - 2-8-2007 at 05:55 PM

Marla, that is a really neat thing to do... I would love to read about it... I hope your article is available online, or that you could post it here for us?!

Minnow, stop calling me names!!

"Softy"???
Minnow, if word gets out that the old Baja Runner is a 'softy'- well, that just ain' t fair, is it?

Anyway, yep, that is indeed the place that JR endorsed.
I went there at his suggestion, and was immediately hooked.
The place is clean, kids are very happy, and they need help,
what more do we need to hear?

Anyway, if the "Corazon de Vida" recommends, you can be sure that the place is legit!

("Softy"?!?!? Indeed!!!)

Baja-or-Bust - 2-9-2007 at 11:34 AM

Marla, I live here in Jamul (San Diego area). I've been involved with an orphanage down in San Vicente called Rancho Santa Marta. It was founded by Bill and Kay Lawrence (Americans). It is the only facility south of Ensenada that double also as a "Special Education School." Feel free to call me and I'll gladly give you more information. I'm planning a trip down there, April 8th through the 13th to serve them. Steve (619)993-2257

Rancho Santa Marta- an excellent place!

Rancho Santa Marta gets my Gold Seal of Approval!
I have known Bill and Kaye (with an 'e') since they ran the place down in Colonio Guerrero about 30 years ago.
They do, indeed, have a school for special needs kids and they take excellent care of all who reside, or study there.

Through the generosity of The Burchell Nursery here in Oakdale we have been able to help them develop a 14 acre fruit orchard, which we are now in the process of improving and updating. The Modesto Rotary Club is assisting in this effort.

Great people too!

Give them my regards, I was in there a couple weeks ago.

(our church has made an annual visit for 20 years in the Summer)

marla - 2-9-2007 at 07:40 PM

Great thanks for sharing all your info! I'll be in touch after I go down there on the 17th.

Well, David I think CH 10 did as it was an interview with Dr Lane Scott as seen outside near the gates to the orphanage. I will see later on if I can still find it?

Hello everyone,

I'm Daniel Ixcot, Development Director for El Oasis orphange, located near Valle de Trinidad and sponsored by Malcolm Smith and other organizations and serious donors.

Regarding the videos from Channel 10 you saw online, I would like to comment this.
1- Lane Scott lied and twisted the truth. Apparently his real intentions were to administrate the orphanage, as he told this to several kids.
2- The court dropped off the case started by Lane against the administrators of the orphanage. After 3 investigations made by 3 different state and federal government agencies, there was no evidence to sustain the false accusations made by Lane.
3- DIF (government agency in charge of all our kids) decided to temporarily relocate some of our kids and their siblings. The reason, Lane was talking with them, giving them money and gifts to convince them and testify against the administrators of the orphanage. DIF officially prohibited Lane to be closer to our kids, even in the School. (By the way, here is another lie. Our kids attend school in Valle de Trinidad, so they are not “Locked up behind barbed wire and locked fences” as described in the videos). DIF was concern about Lane trying to “run away” with some of teen girls he gave money and gifts in the school. So DIF was not going to revel to Channel 10 nor Lane, where they take some of the “missing kids” to protect them from Lane.

The orphanage has many needs to care about our kids, that we DON’T HAVE and even if we would have it, CAN’T WAIST MONEY and TIME to “Sue for Defamation” to Channel 10 or Lane Scott. We rather to keep helping and taking care of our kids. We explained this to our donors and supporters, but most of them KNEW this was a false accusation, because they constantly visit the orphanage and are friends of many of our kids, and know if something like this would be happening, they would know it.

Just a quick example: A house father was cooking and some kids playing inside the house, got too close the kitchen and one of them got burned in a hand. This is an ACCIDENT not a kid TORTURED or ABUSED by the staff.

The videos tell different stories about the same issue. In one video they said the police told channel 10 they had to take some kids away from the orphanage. In a different video, they said “no one says anything about the missing kids nor where they were taken”.

To be honest, our older kids saw this videos online at the school and got very angry with Lane for the false accusations. Girls said “Our friends in school now are asking us if we were rapped” and this is so embarrassing for us because is not true.

If anyone has more question, please feel free to contact me, any time.

Does anyone have any current information about the El Oasis Orphanage outside of Valle de Trinidad?

wilderone - 5-1-2008 at 10:16 AM

Marla, if you've succeeded in writing a story on the orphanages, could you share with us here?
Just curious - why are there so many orphans? It's not like this is a war-ravaged country, or AIDS-ridden, and usually plenty of extended family support. ?????

Perhaps because there's nomadic indigenous people who just can't care for them. That may be part of the reason.

These kids' parents, by and large, are not deceased.
They just cannot (or will not) take care of the kids.
So, they end up in the street, or with DIF and if they are lucky they get into a well run, so-called "orphanage."

Referenced in this thread last year was the foundation started by some of "my kids" which is really a reliable source of info on the subject,

check it out.

marla - 5-2-2008 at 01:33 PM

Sorry I just found this thread from February. Here is the story I wrote if you're interested in reading it. The government in Mexico provides no financial support for the orphanages. So they exist only because kind-hearted people support them. Most of the "orphans" I visited actually have been abandoned by their parents due to drug addiction, severe poverty or other reasons. Unlike the U.S. Mexico does not have a tradition of adoption so these kids will never be adopted like my children, Michael and Sandy, who I adopted as foster children because their mom could not get off drugs. The people at Corazon are very worried what is going to happen to their contributions once you need a passport to cross the border. Fyi, there's also a cool slideshow on the righthand side of the photo. http://www.ocregister.com/ocregister/news/local/irvine/artic...
