Your Favorite Baja Bar

tripledigitken - 2-6-2007 at 09:05 PM

The few of you Nomads that like to down an adult beverage, must have a favorite establishment to share.

Here is one of mine. I bet there is a Nomad that might even know the customers here, and surely the bar.

Ken

(Pelican Reef Bar...Mulege)

Mine used to be Club Bar Miramar back in the 80s. We had too many good times there. Haven't been back since. There used to be another on the south end of the beach that we called the Popeye bar. Not sure if that was it's real name though.

La Potranca ------ Calle Miramar, Ensenada
Can't begin to tell you how much fun that place can be. Not here, anyway.

Bars? Favorites? :?:Been barred from one or two, tosed out of more than one, and bumped across several.:bounce::)

Hook - 2-7-2007 at 01:28 PM

Not in Baja, but I sure like Edgar's in Mazatlan. Couple blocks south of the downtown mercado.

I spent some time in the Miramar in SF, too, in the 70s-80s. Fun place; had a good jukebox. Rosita's next door had good food for cheap. Havent been back in 15-20 years.

In Baja, probably the Pelican now.

La Salina's pretty cool. Interesting criteria for specials. Walk down onto the beach with drinks, play volleyball in the back. Great selection of books for trade. Easy parking even if towing something monstrous. Good mexican combo on weekends.

I keep hearing Virgins is pretty good......but probably wont be finding out any time soon.

I seem to drink in camp, mostly. Is that a sign of alcoholism? Or just being cheap-AZZ.......

Second hand ciggy smoke is starting to get to me these days.....gawd awful in some bars at times. Oh well, it's Mexico.

[Edited on 2-7-2007 by Hook]

bajabass - 2-7-2007 at 01:51 PM

Bahia Cantilles, behind Virgin's. Tequila's in Ensenada, next to Anthony's. The bar at Magana's in La Mision, next to the bridge on the free road.Tomatoes and Beer, San Quintin. Just a few that have a lot of my money!!!

Martyman - 2-7-2007 at 01:56 PM

Ho wabout the birthplace of the margarita...Hussongs!

bajabass - 2-7-2007 at 02:02 PM

Great, except when overrun by cruise ship people!! Great place to meet the local chicas!!Oh, almost forgot Hurachas in San Quintin, met my doctora bonita, wife to be, again, great place to meet nice locals!

doradodan - 2-7-2007 at 06:04 PM

El Toro Bravo in Cabo, seems like there are always alot of girls there.

DEVEAU - 2-7-2007 at 06:06 PM

The bar at Mike's! Learned most of what I know about Baja there.

Sorry I probably have a picture somewhere.

Oso - 2-7-2007 at 06:24 PM

Miramar in San Felipe... NOT!
Used to be good place to get together with local gringos.
Last time there with friends from NC, they wanted to try some quality tequila. I ordered shots of a high end reposado- 5 bucks a shot. Scum-sucking thieves had refilled the bottle with some cheap (clear) crap. Luckily my friends didn't really know the difference, but I did. I hear it's been bought out and will become something else. Good riddance.

rpleger - 2-7-2007 at 07:16 PM

Ken is right on.....

Pelican Reef Bar...Mulege is the best.

The last one I visited, I guess....

Mexray - 2-7-2007 at 07:55 PM

...However, ...Hussongs can be a blast when it's stuffed with locals and a Mariachi Band blaring in the background! A smile and a friendly 'hola' will earn you many new friends, there!

Celito Lindo's bar has been a great place over the years...their killer margaritas have helped set the mood for fun there! Haven't been there lately since the ownership's changed...so don't know if it's still the same.

I think we should try and talk Antonio of Baja Cactus in El Rosario to build a cantina. The 'Baja Cactus Bar' could become 'Baja Famous' as THE place to stop for a cool drink and a friendly chat to swap lies with fellow Baja travelers. It gets my vote.

Cantilles is pretty fun, always filled with characters, and great Margis! La Salina is ok, but the Magis kinda suck...sorry Bernie. When in Ensenada we love Rincon del Sol, upstairs above the hotdog stand across the street from El Rey Sol.Tell Junior we sent you!!

Hussongs

rogerj1 - 2-8-2007 at 12:29 AM

I had a great night in Hussongs my last trip to Ensenada. I met Roberto and Moises that night. Moises owns a gift shop nearby. Moises was buying Mariachi songs all night, he couldn't stop himself! What a buzz it is having a Mariachi band playing right in front of you. Arriba!

Toro Bravo in Cabo? Ha!

My vote would go to Hussongs of old--

When Walter was alive and a small trio played Viennese waltzes, maggies were huge served from the blender and very few tourist.

But that was another time in another century,

Now you take me back to my youth. A typical friday night in the late 60's..............

Hotel Nelson (rum & coke), then a few doors to the Long Bar (beers), then off to New Mikes's bar (entertainment). By then we would be hungry.

(We allways thought that the Blue Fox was an urban myth, with it's Circus type entertainment.):tumble:

I remember the taco stand at the top of the stairs that lead to La Especial retaurant. The same block that the Woolworths occupied. Taco's with carrot and one green onion $.25 each.

How we crossed back over the border and got home safe countless times I ponder to this day. :wow:

Bajalero - 2-8-2007 at 12:23 PM

That's what the sign read at Bill Alvarados' bar in his hotel at P. Chivato and believe me , it was true .

There was nothing better than pulling in there years ago , after a long hot drive and surviving what was then definately a sixpack and a half washboard dirt road, that wound it's way from Palo Verde through the cardon forest, out towards SanMarcos Tierra and then southeast to Chivato.

Sitting in the bar in the afternoon, after a hard , hot day fishing (is that possible?) looking across the expanse of water at the mouth of conception or being there closing the place down playing liars dice with Pedro , Raul ,Chuy , Jesus and later Saul ( who now has the palapa in Mulege) it was a great place at a great time.

Thanks Bill

All gone now and built up and infested with all the sorts I thought I was avoiding when I went to Baja

Hook - 2-8-2007 at 12:33 PM

How could I forget the bar at Chivato? Still the best view of any bar I've been to in Baja.

I remember the doubles were HUGE and 3.00, before the ejido sold out. And it didnt matter what tequila you wanted; it was still 3.00. I think I fell in love with Hornitos in that bar.

THAT was my favorite Baja bar of all time.

Bernie, how are you getting back now that the road is shut? I live in the ejido in La Mision and they won't let us use the toll road exit to get in. Have to exit at La Fonda and take the old road around. Can you get thru on the dirt road all the way to La Salina? Quicker to launch "Mi Sancha" at the marina. All the building in front of the ejido is a real pain.I think I may sell my lot and look further south. I have plenty of snotty millionaire neighbors here in O.C. !!! I will look you up the next time I am in La Salina on a Friday night with all my friends in the ejido. I am sure you know a few of them.

Finally, a question I am positive that I have the correct answer for...

All of them are my favorite!

BornFisher - 2-8-2007 at 09:46 PM

Bahia Cantiles, espically when that fine gentleman and expert fisherman (some guy named Bill), brings in his fresh caught yellowtail!! Senor Bill will ask Nick for a beer to settle his hands, then from his cooler produce the filet of Yellowtail. With hands settled, he takes his knife, thin slices the fish, puts some soy and wasabi on a paper plate, and passes it on to JC!!! Once JC aproves, the fish is passed around the bar for all to enjoy! So if you go into BC, and see a guy named Bill, buy him a beer!!!!

David K - 2-8-2007 at 10:09 PM

Hmmm... Is this confession time?

The first bar I went into (legally) was the Club Bar Miramar in San Felipe... 1975 (age 18)... It was probably during the First Score Baja 1000.

The bar I got most blitzed in would be Cielito Lindo in April, 2001... trip with Amo Pescar... Again in June, 2001 for M's first BBBB party!

Between those two trips in '01, I think Bedman and/ or Mexray were seeing how much 'Baja' I could handle! Thanks guys!!!:P:rolleyes:

Oh, and how about Desert Bull's gasoline blender tequila contest at BBBB-1? That was special!!!:spingrin::spingrin:

Anyway, great memories were made... Not so much to the drinking, but much more to the wonderful friends I have met in Baja!!!:light::tumble:

Baja&Back - 2-9-2007 at 08:20 AM

How's this for "old time"?:

Chuy's beach bar in Cabo - 1975.
He owned the hotspring where Hotel Hacienda is now. All us freaks camped around the spring, sat in the "hot tub" and he would serve us bucket beer (Carta Blancas, I think), buckets of boiled camarones & roll fatties for us all!!! Cost maybe $10 / day for everything :bounce:

He also had a beach palapa in the sand if you wanted to bake. The visiting yachties would come ashore & party, too.

Those were the days, My Friend ...

DENNIS - 2-9-2007 at 08:51 AM

Seems like the old days had a lot of bars called Chuys. Downtown Ensenada, Chuys Bar. Years past, it was out by the Propane plant.
Gone now but not forgotten. It was THE hangout for the expats in the 70s and 80s.
Chuy Arce........ A gentleman, for sure. DEP

Ahhhhhh! Punta Chivato Hotel circa late 80's

I did not have a picture of Bill's piece of heaven otherwise I would have chosen it also.

I agree with you both of course. My first exposure to the Mulege area was camping up the beach from the hotel. Drinks around the pool watching the sunset, a perfect moment. Do you guys remember the manx cat that was a regular there back in those days? I still have one of Bill's tee-shirts.

Very sad what it has become. The locals don't even go there now, as the owners don't make them welcome.

Mike ; That bad road is part of what made it a great place but it was/ is murder on vehicles . But you got to know everyone working out there because you always had to stop and help someone broke down and needing a ride to town or a tow. Hope they never pave it . Hell the neuvo riche in their shacks on shell beach can't wait to pave it and b-tch about it all the time . I've gotten to where I just speed up and dust em instead of stopping to help and have to listen to the incessant whineing about the condition of the road and no electricity. The way some of them act it's as if someone dropped them off in the middle of nowhere and said you have to build a house here. I think 95% of them have done so simply because their friends did so., not because they really appreciate the(somewhat) remoteness and primativeness of the area. Hell , some out there are even starting HOA b.s. Can you believe that! Can't wait! Ye Hah! yippee- ky- yay bring it on p i n c h e grringos!

anyway, end of that rant:saint:

Re: the hotel , you ought to be there sometime when the Sicilianitas show up. Just don't leave the duct tape at home

TDKen ; Yep , Bill loved his cats. I had fun going out with the guys and road hunting liebres with a 22 to feed the darn things. With the winds of change knocking at the door in just about every nook and cranny in Baja, I don't think that ambiance that was created there is possible anymore . I mean , can you really relax now? The time when you found a favorite place and could go back to it again, pretty much as it was, is over.

aquaholic - 2-9-2007 at 10:57 AM

This is not exactly Chivato a bar story, but "pre-bar" memories...during the years when Bill was working hard to get the Pta Chivato Hotel open, we'd frequently stay at the 'Big House' with Bill and Doc Lyons. Having drinks on the patio in front of the house and throwing the catch of the day on the barbeque was a true piece of heaven. Not many went out there in those days, except a few who camped on the beach northeast of the hotel. I'd anchor my boat next to the old pier, and we'd dive and fish San Marcos, the small islands, and the north side of the point...that was before it all got "found". In those days there were lobsters in the rocks in front of the Hotel...days long gone by...the tail-less cats were there, though...
