Buying fine Guadalupe Valley wines in Ensenada

BajaVida - 2-9-2007 at 08:52 PM

We are heading down next month and I need to respond to a friend's doubt that Baja wines are good. Can anyone suggest a place to buy the wine? We are just passing through Ensenada and would like something not too far off the main drag.

Thanks

im no wine snob......

Theres plenty of good wines, and many of my best customers prefer Mexican reds to anything from France or California. Good Mexican wine its expensive, and in my opinion, Mexico needs to offer more middle of the road wines. Wine here is either mediocre, or really good.

just drive thru the valle and taste at the rooms - they have a bunch of great stuff!!!!!!!

Best spot is in the building at the Northeast corner of 6th and Miramar. Also at the upscale market next door and to the East.

As you hit the port area, Miramar is the second (short) stoplight. Left turn and app 5 blocks. If you see restaurant "La Embotelladora Vieja" then you've gone one block too far.

The Valle de Guadalupe is not even 20 minutes east of Ensenada. I agree with Capt Mike, go taste for yourself. If you don't want to do that you can pick from a decent selection at Comercial Mexicana and Costco. There are also a couple of wine bars in Ensenada where you could do some sampling

Burned my wine tastebuds out on "Cold Duck" and "MD-20-20" a few years ago,was fun.:tumble: Have been "wine-challenged" ever since.:tumble::D.

fine Mexican wine

Vino de Santo Tomas is my #1 choice. Get a map of Ensenada and find their tasting room. I understand they're in partnership now with Vinisterra located in the village of San Antonio de las Monas at km. 94.5 on the Ensenada-Tecate Hwy. 3, 646-178-3350. Check 'em out!

I visited some of the GV wineries last summer

We are just looking for a place to buy a few bottles and hit the road. My reputaion is on the line. I have a friend who claims Baja is too south to produce fine wines. I need to prove him wrong, but not sure I will buy a $40 bottle to prove my point. I know I am right anyway.

MAD DOG 20/20???

the wino's of today have it soooooo good. 2 buck chuck is not a bad choice, for the lesser wine challenged among us (myself included)....

Vino de Baja continuada...

Mulegena - 2-10-2007 at 05:09 PM

La Bodega de Santo Tomas is located at Miramar #666 between 6th & 7th St. Phone # 52-617-833333 ex. 22. You can taste and purchase exquisite wines at very reasonable prices that won't bust your wallet. ooH... mouth-watering... Baja Nectar... mmmmm....

Oh, excuse my reverie. If you miss the Bodega in Ensenada you can find Santo Tomas wines at the nice roadstop/picnic area/gas station on Hwy. 1 south of town in the Valle de Santo Tomas or see my post above to find the winery itself.

Another cono-sewer

Isn't it curious?!?!

thebajarunner - 2-10-2007 at 08:48 PM

Ask a reasonable question (and surely, BV asked a reasonable question)

Receive several reasonable, well thought out replies.

Then, brace yourself for some pretty lame (dare I say retarded) responses.

Sad commentary, ain't it???

Yes, indeed.

Pardon the irreverence but, I thought the discussion was about wine.

They have it right.

IF you cannot contribute because of lack of substance, highjacking the thread is unfortunate.

Now back to the question:
Adobe Guadalupe has some white wines of interest.

Stopped in at L.A Cetto and have had some good wine well below the $40 (or even $20) range

Stopped in at Chateau Camou for the first as an appetizer to our Valentine's lunch at Laja. They offer up some excellent wines at decent prices. Their 2001 Zin is particular good. We ended up coming home with a case of wine from there! Oh, and Laja was perfect as always.

JESSE - 2-15-2007 at 02:07 AM

I Tried the 2001"Gran Ricardo" from Monte Xanic tonight, it was very good in the style of top quality French clarets.

psmith - 2-15-2007 at 07:55 AM

Are there any decent Mexican table wines like Two Buck Chuck for $5 or less?

best, paul

PS> Years ago (before Two Buck Chuck) I was shopping for wine at Beverages & More in Oakland. I stopped the store manager and said, "You folks turned me on the cheap white wine. What do you recommend?" He replied, "WE turned you on to cheap white wine? What were we thinking?"

bajabound2005 - 2-15-2007 at 08:09 AM

The government taxes the heck out of wine as a "luxury" so finding something under $5 that is drinkable is unlikely.
