We all obviously waste time at the computer. How many Nomads play Free Cell?

vgabndo - 2-10-2007 at 12:11 PM

My wife and I justify the time spent "problem solving" by claiming that we are fighting-off Alzheimer's Disease! Will anyone else "cop" to some form of Free Cell addiction?

Capt. George - 2-10-2007 at 12:14 PM

Scrabble yes Free Cell??

oxxo - 2-10-2007 at 12:22 PM

Yes, I am a FreeCell as well as Spyder solitaire aficionado. However, I have graduated to Su Doku where I am a Black Belt. I also like the Mensa site to clear my mind. Finally I am trying constantly to improve my spelling and grammar. Take this test: http://www.sentex.net/~mmcadams/spelling.html

Mexitron - 2-10-2007 at 12:38 PM

Free Cell addiction--guilty! But now I limit it to three games per day.

vgabndo - 2-10-2007 at 12:47 PM

I KNEW it! Started at zero and just solved 3659. Most recent to kick my butt: 3637. An all new record for losses in a row!!!

Mensa I am not. Densa perhaps! I can't get above a 78% win average and 51 in a row is my current best.:(

Good mental exercise though.

bajabound2005 - 2-10-2007 at 01:08 PM

yes, far too much Freecell so here's a way to make yourself quit --
when you are losing just press: shift, control, F10 all at the same time. Instant win. Takes the fun out of playing.

vgabndo - 2-10-2007 at 01:50 PM

BajaBound...I didn't want to hear that! I have always wanted to be able to back out of a game, where I haven't made a move, without getting a loss.

Because I don't start the next draw til I've won the last, I hate it when I pull up a draw I've already won and then have to win it AGAIN.

Densa!

DENNIS - 2-10-2007 at 02:20 PM

What's freecell?

comitan - 2-10-2007 at 02:25 PM

As much as I want when I want 66% 21 in a row, also Spades, & Tripeaks.

vgabndo - 2-10-2007 at 02:33 PM

Dennis: We're PCs you may be a Mac. Free Cell is a sort of up-side-down solitare. You can see all your options before you start moving cards. On Windows XP there are now one million different draws. I understand that there is still one draw that cannot be solved. You'll find it in your start menu under games. The rules couldn't be much simpler. Start playing at your own risk.

DENNIS - 2-10-2007 at 02:37 PM

Thanks Vag ----
I'll try it, on my PC.

KenS - 2-10-2007 at 03:27 PM

Now you've done it! I hadn't played free cell in years and couldn't even remember what it was, now I'm not sure when I'll sleep tonight.

It's pretty silly that such a simple game can be so addictive.

bajabound2005 - 2-10-2007 at 03:46 PM

Oh, Dennis! Don't start or you'll NEVER finish your house. Don't say I didn't tell you so!!!

Mexitron - 2-10-2007 at 04:08 PM

My record is winning 426 games in a row but that was a couple years ago...

missed 20

i guess that's better than missing 21, no?

vgabndo - 2-10-2007 at 04:31 PM

Crap...fiffteen rong out of fiffty...a C at best.

So much for making choices based on appearances...

Hell...I didn't spell FreeCell correctly when I started this!!!!

DianaT - 2-10-2007 at 04:42 PM

FreeCell---dang it. I also had forgotten about that game---now it is on my mind----:no:

Spelling? Any class in college that did not allow the use of a dictionary was dropped---gave my history students bonus points for every one of my spelling errors they found. Missed 17. :P

vgabndo - 2-10-2007 at 05:16 PM

Diane: I got a chuckle there. I had a really contentious relationship with a prof. in a Survey of World Religions class.
I corrected the spelling on his final, and he gave me a B even though I ACED his test.

I'm a "micro-historian", what did you teach?

Sallysouth - 2-10-2007 at 05:23 PM

Hey Vag, maybe take xoox's test! And here I thought I was a pretty good speller! Missed 14!! Dang. Now on to the Freecell....oh boy, here we go!!

Ah, the egos of many Social Science Professors---(sorry if that offends any one, and there are REAL exceptions). I also used to teach my high school students some of the practical sides of getting through college. Example, all Social Science Professors have a "point of view", some conservative, some liberal, and while they say they will accept opposing views, don't buy it--most of them really want scarf and barf on their tests---their egos get in the way.

Even though I became a teacher 'late in life' , I have taught a number of things in a number of places. But one of my favorites, and most difficult, was teaching Advanced Placement U.S. History to students in Calexico where about 98% spoke English as a second or third language.

Besides not being able to spell, I also have 0 artistic ability, so the first day of class, I would draw a stick figure on the board and tell them, that was it---they took pitty and would volunteer when I needed something illustrated.

Now, back to that dang FreeCell game! :fire:

"I try to walk away, and they just keep sucking me back in"

#3637 solved.

I used to run above 90% when I was in my prime and played a couple dozen games a day and stayed away from T.V. Not that good any more, brain is full of intestinal gas and intestines full of brains. I guess I've been watching too much Faux News.

vgabndo - 2-10-2007 at 05:57 PM

Oxxo:

Go ahead and tell me you did 3637 on the first try.

My previous string was 5 in a row, that punk somehow stunned me eleven times!!! But then I'm just a mid-70%er.

FARASHA - 2-11-2007 at 10:42 AM

YEAH - FreeCell, Golf.Exe, and for a change to train reaction time and multiple motoric skills - PINBALL. For solution thinking - PEGGED. Keeps my mind off, from things bothering me.>f< And I'm bothered a LOT :lol:
Okay - will now try this NEW Link - something to be bothered about now

edited for another thing I love to do - TICKLE- tests on web.tickle.com/tests - tells me about state of brain

I thought I had kicked the habit, but it just keeps dragging me back.

I have the new Vista operating system. Vista allows you to "undo" moves all the way back to the beginning of the game. I am now up to 500 games without a loss using this feature. Kind of takes the fun out of it.

Wasting time equals wasting a life.

CaboRon - 8-24-2008 at 09:09 AM

Never heard of Freecell ....

I usually play on Party Poker .... Texas holdem' , I enjoy playing with real people.

Welcome back Dennis.

lingililingili - 8-24-2008 at 09:13 AM

Oxxo: I do not know if "undoing" all the way back to the beginning is lucky or cheating! Personally I really enjoy freecell but my latest bad habit is Jewel Quest, talk about addicting!

vandenberg - 8-24-2008 at 09:22 AM

Making "Freecell" more interesting, try having the finished columns in a pre determined space. Either all in the center or two on each end or every other space. Makes it a little more challenging. I have seen a version in Canada somewhere, where you could only move one card at the time. Challenging!

rpleger - 8-24-2008 at 10:05 AM

Every day to keep the brain cell going...avg 69-70...

I love it and hate it at the same time...

Phil S - 8-24-2008 at 10:11 AM

Ah yes!!!!!!!!!!! Brain Stimulation. Much better than just addicted!!! Also too much time doing the "E Games" disk. Didn't know there was a millliion ways to do solitaire until I stumbled onto this disk!!!! Add Hearts, MJWIN, Bridge, Backgammon (now doing it also on the wide wide world of the internet with other players) and Minesweeper. I should have a very sharp mind by the time I reach 100. However, I don't think any of my 'organs" will live that long.

bajaguy - 8-24-2008 at 10:13 AM

OK, try this one:

Rich plays poker for hours!

losfrailes - 8-24-2008 at 10:58 AM

Party Poker. Fine site. Lots of options. With good connection, lots of fun.

If on a US connection, can only play with play money.

That just does not seem right to be able to go all the way back. Just think if you could play poker that way.:yes:

Our biggest addiction is Scrabble---learning the Scrabble dictionary lots of strange 2 letter words.

Baja&Back - 8-24-2008 at 12:09 PM

Spider Solitaire, maybe - Freecell, NEVER!

Rots yer braine ...

rhintransit - 8-24-2008 at 12:31 PM

busted. do I get some days off my addiction time if I've moved on to double Freecell? I would play Roof Rats and/or Scrabble but can't find good versions for the MAC. and now it's the daily crossword puzzle that Yahoo does. any other simple game suggestions, MAC friendly? these are my morning tea after email time wasters...but, hey, it's hot out there.

Wingnut - 8-25-2008 at 02:26 PM

FreeCell is for wimps, Spider Solitaire, all four suits, now that's a man-size challenge. Try it, you'll be hooked.....

Perhaps Too Much Disclosure

Gypsy Jan - 8-25-2008 at 03:05 PM

I had a stroke that affected my vision and my neurologist says that Freecell (and other games requiring logic and strategy) helps to build alternate routes and recovery in my brain paths.

The Growling Gabacho would disagree, he thinks that I have just been mental from the start. :fire::P
