Brian Parkhouse receives first Class 1 start as over 350 entries expected in March 10 desert race in Mexico

LOS ANGELES—Las Vegas’ Tim Herbst and Southern California’s Chris Blais received the pole positions for four-wheel and two-wheel vehicles in the computerized drawing for starting positions held Friday for the upcoming 21st Annual Tecate SCORE San Felipe 250. Herbst races in the featured SCORE Trophy-Truck division while Blais competes in Class 22.
Round 2 of the six-race 2007 SCORE Desert Series will be held March 10 in the tiny fishing village of San Felipe, Baja California, Mexico.
With over 350 entries expected to compete in 27 Pro and 6 Sportsman classes, the green flag will drop at 6 a.m. on Saturday, March 10, for the motorcycle and ATV classes, followed by the car and truck classes two hours later at approximately 8:30 a.m. The start and finish line area for the course will once again be the landmark San Felipe arches on Highway 5 on the outskirts of San Felipe.
Following January’s season-opening SCORE Laughlin Desert Challenge, America’s Foremost Desert Racing Series will visit Mexico for the first of three races in 2007.
Drawing the first starting slot for the unlimited Class 1 open-wheel desert race cars was Brian Parkhouse, of Bell Gardens, Calif. Riding the first ATV off the line will be San Diego’s Jovany Pimentel.
Herbst, 43, who will drive solo while his older brother Ed continues his rehabilitation from neck surgery he had last November, has four class wins including three overalls in San Felipe in the No. 19 Terrible Herbst Motorsports Ford F-150 SCORE Trophy-Truck.
With a race-record 35 entries so far in the class for 800 horsepower, unlimited production trucks, Steele and Stout will lead a strong field in SCORE Trophy-Truck that features many of the world’s top desert racers.
Blais, 26, who led the overall motorcycle championship team in San Felipe in 2005, will split riding time this year with David Pearson, 23, of Las Vegas, on the 2x Red Bull KTM 525XC. Blais became the first American to finish on the podium in January when he finished third on a KTM in the challenging Dakar Rally.
In Friday’s computerized drawing, Class 1 had the most entries with 38, followed by SCORE Trophy-Truck with 35, Class 1-2/1600 with 25, SCORE Lite with 20 and Class 10 with 17. With late registration accepted up until race morning, a race-record total of 306 vehicles officially entered in time for the drawing.
Among the Pro Motorcycle classes, both Class 22 (open) and Class 30 (riders 30 years and over), both had 14 entries. Leading the Pro ATV entries in the drawing was Class 25 (open) with 10.
Parkhouse, 47, will split driving time with another SCORE veteran, Tom Ridings, 52, Long Beach, Calif., in the No. 101 Parkhouse Motorsports Chevy-powered Jimco open-wheel desert race car in Class 1.
Helping Pimental, 22, lead the ATV entries off the line in a Yamaha YFZ450 will be riding mates Christian Vargas, 18, San Diego, Roberto Ulloa, 26, Chula Vista, Calif., and Rafael Guzman, 24, National City, Calif.
Besides Herbst, who with his brother Ed won the overall and SCORE Trophy-Truck titles in San Felipe in 1999, 2000 and 2001, the record SCORE Trophy-Truck field includes last year’s overall and SCORE Trophy-Truck winner Garron Cadiente, Mesa, Ariz., in the No. 38 G&R Racing Ford F-150. The 2004 SCORE Trophy-Truck race and overall San Felipe winner Mark Post, San Juan Capistrano returns in his No. 3 Riviera Racing Ford F-150 with new teammate, Rob MacCachren, of Las Vegas, who won this race in 2003 with Gus Vildosola. Vildosola, Mexicali, Mexico, will split driving time this year with his son Gus Vildosola Jr., in the No. 4 Vildosola Racing Ford F-150.
“We’ve had a bad run in recent start draws so this is a major improvement, especially in a race we have done so very well in over the years,” said Herbst, who with his brother Ed make up the winningest All-Time SCORE Trophy-Truck team with 11 career race wins and four season point championships in the 13-year history of the marquee SCORE racing division. “It won’t be the same without Ed doing some of the driving, but we have a great team and together we have a lot of confidence that we can make up for his absence behind the wheel. Our biggest hope is that he has full recovery from his surgery and is able to rejoin us behind the wheel this season.”
Cameron Steele, 38, an ESPN action-sports announcer from San Clemente, Calif., has entered in three classes for San Felipe. Steele drives the Desert Assassins No. 16 Ford F-150 in SCORE Trophy-Truck.
Steele, whose wife Heidi Steele is a SCORE regular in Class 7SX in a Ford Ranger, will ride a Suzuki DRZ450 in Class 22 and a Desert Assassin-VW in SCORE Lite.
Among the other racers to draw first starting position in their respective classes were: Steven Eugenio, El Centro, Calif. (Class 1-2/1600, Lothringer-VW), Ricardo Malo, Mexicali, Mexico. (SCORE Lite, Curry/BRP-VW) and the Las Vegas husband and wife team of Adam and Bekki Wik (Class 10, Jimco-Honda).

Fresh from a season-opening class 1 win at the 13th SCORE Laughlin Desert Challenge, John Herder, Tucson, Ariz., finds himself in the Overall SCORE Desert Series point lead after one of six-races. Herder, who drives a Chevy-powered Jimco open-wheel desert race car, has 70 points after picking up his second career win in the popular SCORE Laughlin Desert Challenge.
Las Vegas’ Rob MacCachren, who won Class 1-2/1600 in a 1600cc VW-powered Fraley is second with 68 points but is not expected to run the full season in the limited open-wheel class as his primary driving responsibility is as the second driver for Mark Post’s No. 3 Riviera Racing Ford F-150 in SCORE Trophy-Truck.
A total of just 19 points separate the top 22 overall point leaders after January’s season-opening SCORE Laughlin Desert Challenge.
Third in overall points with 65 after winning the featured SCORE Trophy-Truck division for high-tech, 800 horsepower unlimited production trucks for the second straight year is Las Vegas’ B.J. Baldwin in the Baldwin Motorsports No. 1 Chevy Silverado. Baldwin’s truck is prepped and the crew provided by Collins Motorsports of Las Vegas.
Fourth in overall points with 64 is Las Vegas’ B.J. Richardson, who is second in Class 1 in a Bunderson-Chevy, while fifth is Matt Gumz, Barstow, Calif., who is second in Class 1-2/1600 with 62 points in a Lothringer-VW.
Just four points separate the next five drivers in SCORE Overall points, led by Ronny Wilson, Long Beach, Calif., who is sixth overall and third in Class 1 with 60 points in another Jimco-Chevy. Garron Cadiente, Mesa, Ariz., is seventh overall and second in SCORE Trophy-Truck just one point behind Wilson in his G&R Racing Ford F-150.
Eighth overall and third in Class 1-2/1600, just one point behind Cadiente with 58 is Las Vegas’ Aaron Hawley, who drives a Sea Grove-VW.
Just one more point back with 57 each, tied for ninth overall after Laughlin are the team of Stan Potter, San Marcos, Calif./Dan Worley, Encinitas, Calif., who lead SCORE Lite in a Jimco-VW and Josh Baldwin, Newport Beach, Calif., who is fourth in Class 1 in a Jimco-Chevy.
Baldwin is a regular in SCORE Trophy-Truck in the No. 86 Baldwin Racing Ford F-150, and isn’t expected to run the full SCORE season in Class 1. Baldwin is sixth in SCORE Trophy-Truck points after Laughlin.
SCORE points are determined both on final finishing position and number of vehicles that started the race within the individual class.
Pre-race festivities at the Tecate SCORE San Felipe 250 will include the colorful SCORE Midway and tech inspection on the Malecon beachfront in downtown alongside the azure waters of the Sea of Cortez from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. on Friday (March 9).
At 9 p.m. on Saturday (March 10), the awards celebration will be held in front of The Beachcomber Night Club on the Malecon.
The 2007 SCORE Desert Series also includes the chase for the $75,000 Kartek Off-Road contingency bonus to be awarded to several 2007 SCORE Class point champions along with the run for the $12,000 Toyota True Grit and Toyota Milestone Awards.

I noticed a couple of things. Jim O'Neal is racing class 30 and 50, maybe 40 is just too tough, just kidding. Glad to see class 20 coming back to life. What is the deal with Cameron Steele, he's again in a Thophy Truck, buggy and MC. He must really like to get beat up. Also nice to see Joey Lane running class 21. David Pearson, 23, of Las Vegas is a really good desert racer. I have the feeling the Honda dominance may be near the end, especially if Mike Childress is part of the KTM effort.

DEVEAU - 2-12-2007 at 12:12 PM

I show a different result in Class 40, only noticed because I'mm 407X?

CLASS 40:
401x CURT INSLEY
402x PAUL NEEDELS
403x DAVE SIMPSON
404x KENT PERKINS
405x BILL BOYER
406x JOHN CONNOLLY
407x RICHARD DEVEAU
408x BRETT HELM
409x STEVE DOWNEY

I copied my list from the SCORE press release and it must have been corrected when it was posted to the SF250 display site.

Good luck in the race, have fun.
