For those who are interested in the historical origins of the Baja California missions in central Mexico, here is a shot of the 16th century fortress-convent located in Tochimilco, Puebla. This site is literally located at the base of the volcano Popocatepetl, at the end of a mountain road that, although paved, caused even me some angst.

Stone set in mortar. They did not produce burned brick there in the 16th century, nor were there any brick structures in the small town today.
