Amigos de Baja and Nomads

zforbes - 2-23-2007 at 01:52 PM

Fairly often I see references to the old Amigos group, usually accompanied by fond memories and regrets about the groups demise. I am curious to know more about Amigos, since it seems like many of that group now are Nomads. Let me be clear that I am not interested in gossip or the blame game. I want to hear how Amigos got started and a little about their history and their legacy to current Baja afficionados. Can someone fill in the newbies (self included) about Amigos? Thanks, Zoe

David K - 2-23-2007 at 02:16 PM

Hi Zoe,

Like here on Nomad, I was a big poster on Amigos de Baja (www.bajanet.com) ... I add that old url because the forums at Baja Quest took the name 'Amigos de Baja' (in bad taste I feel) and use it now for their forums.

Amigos, like Nomad allowed conversations about Baja and between the people on Amigos who love Baja... Amigos means friends and the hosts of that forum really enjoyed that we on the Internet actually became personal friends via the organized parties and group camps... They were Eric, Trish and Earle (who is als a Baja Nomad member)... and they attended my Viva Baja events and M's BBBB parties...

As Amigos got more popular, some the the old timers thought the newer members changed the site from a fishing and trip report forum to a party line of sorts and often ragged on M for her BBBB party invites or me for whatever.

However, Eric told me in person he really liked that we were making friends with Amigos de Baja!

They retired the forum in 2003 as it was just too time consuming and Doug (also an Amigo de Baja member) had upgraded his Escapist.com forum in 2002 to the style you see here now and was the natural new home for the Amigos... However a few may have gone to the other forums, or visit them all... Doug's Baja Nomad forums is by far the most active and complete forum on Baja... and the most fair to everyone.

Here's a photo of Eric and Trish at Viva Baja #2 (Doug is in the background with his daughter on his knee):

Here's Earle (Eric's dad)...

Hook - 2-23-2007 at 02:42 PM

To me, the memories are somewhat bittersweet. While I appreciate all the effort that Earl and Co. put into it on the Amigos board, the old style software was very prone to being monopolized by a single cause. It was similar to the software on Metcalf's site, but I believe it did have some archival capabilities. Maybe not.

But for a long time, it was the ONLY real source for what was going on down there for working stiffs like me. That generally made it worthwhile, except at times when it was being monopolized.

As far as the personalities go, I think most of us have mellowed since then.........or, we're better at sitting on our hands.

With a single exception, the Nomad experience is much better, IMO. That's all I'll say about that.........

Duck and cover might be in order, though.

fdt - 2-23-2007 at 02:57 PM

Freds = Preschool
Amigos = Elementary
Nomad = somewere between junior high or high school
Some will go on to college/university, some will drop out and just go to Baja. I still don't know what I want to be when I grow up. :bounce:

zforbes - 2-23-2007 at 03:34 PM

Thank you all for the history and personal insights. Yes, I had picked up on some mixed feelings, which I now understand a little better, but the overall legacy seems pretty positive to an outsider.

I waited for David to answer because he has the most knowledge of the Amigo's board. He is the guy who introduced me to that board and he is the one who brought most of us over to Doug's Place.

I have very much enjoyed both boards and apparently did not appreciate the divisions that some felt existed on the Amigo site..................In fact I wrote a poem about the loss of that 'home'...............I'll try to dig it up and send it to you.

zforbes - 2-23-2007 at 04:47 PM

Thanks, Bernie, I'll look forward to it.

Bajaboy - 2-23-2007 at 05:14 PM

I think there were many positives to AdB. I especially enjoyed the weekly fishing reports on Amigos. I also met some really cool people along the way. The Matomi Adventure comes to mind.

Unfortunately, there were too many egos involved at times. It still amazes me how people will hijack a post instead of simply answering the question.

Oh well-

As you apparently have I have come to expect a few to hijack posts and in a few cases not even know they are doing it...........I just end up staying away from their posts and that seems to work.

Still the positives far outweigh the negatives...........What is that old song about 'accent the positive and eliminate the negative and latch onto......................

The Sculpin - 2-23-2007 at 05:52 PM

Against my better judgement, I will weigh in here.
I first stumbled into Amigos around 95 or 96...at the time it had been up and running about a year or so. The people on that board really knew about traveling, living, and playing in baja, and the typical "new kid" seemed to come to the site with lot's of experience. Because of that, alot of the banter was either fairly detailed, full of baja jargon, or had a sense to it that you really didn't have to describe too much of what you were talking about because most had already been there or knew about it. I remember a thread that dealt with a particular nasty stretch of dirt road from Conejo to Pastora. Who the hell goes on that road!?!?! Well, we had a great discussion, and I haven't seen a word about it since! I think that's the first time I really talked to Cornell.
I digress....when "the new crew" came on, there were some that felt that the tone of the discussion was less about baja, and more about creating opportunities to meet in baja - kinda like a travel/social club. That's why M caught so much grief about those damn BBBB's (oops!), and , well DavidK? Bless his heart it was a train wreck waiting to happen! I mean, fisherman don't talk about fish spots, and surfers don't talk about surf spots, and back then, there just wasn't much written about either! That's why Eric's reports were so great. It was a great little secret.
Anyway, change has to happen or else you die. The internet has chnaged, baja has changed, and, well, you get the point. I mean, to actually use an internet chat site to arrange events in a place you love, well, that was unimagineable! Looking back, it all seems pretty silly.

However, I still prefer to be a crumudgeon........especially in baja....

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!

Hahaha.

Heh.

Good one, Hook.

Anyway, I agree with the curmudgeon, er, Sculpin. Things change. You remember the guy (Duncan, maybe?) who posted about a secret surf spot in Bahia Soledad? He refused to disclose the location, but did say that he'd found a huge white shark carcass there.

;D

That sort of b.s. was what the Amigos board fun.

Here is a poem (?) that I wrote with the demise of Amigo's Board

Baja Bernie - 2-23-2007 at 06:14 PM

Amigo’s de Baja

People with a shared dream
But with many facets
Lovers of the Ocean and Sea
Those who would find Missions
Or the cold and cruel deserts
Tonight you freeze
Tomorrow your blood boils
Those who take off
Down seldom used trails
Boots an hats
Scuffing the sand
Temperatures rising
A land apart
Comfortable at the ocean
The desert barely endurable
Mountains cold and pure
Amigos de Baja
A home that captures people
And makes them friends
Baja Ladies and Gents
People
Sharing the oceans
The missions and deserts
Struggling upon the mountains
Sharing
Bahia de Los Angeles
Mulege
San Ignacio
San Felipe
And TJ too
Here was home all safe and secure
A place to go when tired and blue
Make ready for a trip
Stop and refill your tank
Find a new pal
Share his thoughts and feelings
Amigos de Baja
A place that welded us together
So that we cared for each other
Even though we had separate
And different needs
Somehow in this safe and happy haven
We all found a way to fulfill ourselves
Our home has been destroyed
We are exposed and hurting
There is a need to reach out
To touch each other
To hold hands
And share our needs
We desperately need to find a way

Bernie Swaim
September, 2003

The way was provided by Doug Means and his BajaNomad Board soon after I wrote this piece.

Things seem to get a bit rocky every now and again but most of us still share a common love of Baja and its people. Hopefully that love for this wonderful land will allow us to work together, to understand our differences and build on those areas where we share a common desire.

Perhaps in this way we will not have to go looking for another new home any time soon.

Santiago - 2-23-2007 at 06:33 PM

Thursdays were very special back then: 1) I'ld find my copy of WON in the mailbox, go grab a beer and read Fred Hoctor's column. 2). Open Amigos and read the fishing report - every last word of it. 3) Go over to the board and read everyone's response to the week's report and catch up on all the news and trip reports.
God - I still remember the report of someone hooking a dodo that dove under the boat and came up the other side and then jumped over the boat - fishperson (whomever it was) did the only thing he could - with rod in hand, jumped in the water, swam under the boat coming up on the other side, climbed in and kept reeling.

Thursdays just aren't the same..........
:(

Great stories and pictures

That really personalizes the Amigos for me. When was that group picture of taken? Can any of you identify yourselves? You look like a happy lot.

I still have copies of Baja HaHa and a CD of 'Fishin' with Fred' that I sell for his widow.................Heck I have to because he helped me with my first book and I owe him.

Paulina - 2-23-2007 at 07:31 PM

Jim,

I think I remember that same dorado post. I wondered how he was able to keep his tension tight. Those were the days. Doc Abraham used to fax me the fish report from town, then I would in turn fax it to Earle for him to post on the board.

I might be bold enough to suggest the reason we all 'got along' in the beginning was because we really didn't know each other back then. Everyone played nice for a while...

Evolution happens.

Skipjack Joe - 2-23-2007 at 07:53 PM

Although I didn't post a great deal I visited Amigos almost from it's inception. I stayed away from the politics and wasn't really aware of much of it. I loved that website. I had a really hard time understanding and accepting it's shutdown. Bajanomads never seemed as good to me for a long time. I liked the joke of the week that was published every Thursday. The webmasters actually put a great deal of effort every week into that website. They had contests every week based upon pictures of remote locations you were supposed to identify. Rather than wait for posts about baja news the webmasters themselves published it. It wasn't just a discussion forum. Not all the members migrated to bajanomads (David Eidell) and I miss their intelligent input.

I have grown to like bajanomads now as much as amigos. The ability to download pictures is a big deal for me. The landscape is so beautiful how did we ever get by just talking about it all those years.

Santiago - 2-23-2007 at 07:56 PM

Paulina: you're right of course.
We still yell "There's Baja Nana's" as we round the red hill first time coming to camp.

Bedman - 2-23-2007 at 08:46 PM

The Amigos picture was taken 5:01 pm June 30th 2001. I can identify most all the people.

David Eidell moved to Mainland Mexico. I used get a note from him every so often but haven't heard from him in almost a year.

Neal Johns - 2-24-2007 at 08:07 AM

I enjoyed the Amigos board because it was the first one I found that was not 'motorhome' oriented. It was fairly easy to stay out of the personal and political rants.:lol:
and, in person, the people were quite friendly.

Skeet/Loreto - 2-24-2007 at 08:17 AM

The Amigos Board reflected the "Ole Baja" that we at that time knew.
Most of us had spent lots of time just doing Baja, then as times change, the New Generation came on Board, and as reflection of the times, brought in the Politics of the time.

The present Culture of California seem to transfer into the experiences of the New Baja Guests, The Druggies, Nudies, could not understand, and still do not understand the Mexicano, they just seem to think the Mexican should change to their Idea of a Lifestyle. The old aganist the New???

******, ****, ******, ******* *******. etc.

After 35 years in Baja Sur, I could see that many "Ugly Americans" had invaded my Beloved Baja. I chose to Leave as others have done.

On the Board Amigos and Nomads I tried to use my Experiences to help others to enjoy Baja as I knew it. Worked sometimes.
The Attacks on Religion by many reflected the Culture of California- I forgave those Attacks- Not the Stupidy of them.

I beleive that Doug has done a Great Job!

God Bless all of you

Another question...

zforbes - 2-24-2007 at 09:57 AM

I see that the Amigos board closed in 2003, but I am unclear when Amigos started coming together. If someone already mentioned it, I missed it, sorry.

flyfishinPam - 2-24-2007 at 10:51 AM

Earl and Eric started amigos de baja about the same time bajabigfish.com came into existence (1996). It was the dot com era. I met them several times throughout the Baja and in So Cal, USA and very early on they asked permission to post our fish reports. I liked seeing the message board and contributed when people had questions about the town I live in (Loreto) if I knew the anwer. I preferred the big thread (like Metcalf has) to the individual subjects format. When the format changed and you had to make a membership I guess I lost interest. Also one poster put up lots of unrelated posts and I understand the off topic in nomad was created partly because of this poster and the others it generated. Is this one better? Apples vs. oranges.

This was M's first Boojum Buddies Baja Bash (BBBB) party at Cielito Lindo and it coincided with the first stop on the trip in Viva Baja Tours (Amo Pescar & David K) 4WD van, a week adventure through Baja with friends from Amigos de Baja (David K, El Camote, David Eidell, Debra aka 'travelpearl', Desert Rat, my kids, and joining us most of the way Miguelito Humfreville). Mike and Mary Ann Humfreville followed us in their P.O.T truck...

It was a great trip, El Camote made a video of the BBBB party and trip... We hoped to set up a 4WD tour business and this was an opportunity for feedback from friends to work out any details for a future business venture Amo and I hoped to have.

9-11 came and the tour business idea was shelved... But, we had three van trips and the photos are in my web site...

http://vivabaja.com/cabras (Punta Cabras trip)

In the photo are so many of us! I am in the center holding the corner of the big sign... Paulina is on one side of me and jeans is on the other.. in front in cammies is my son, Chris...

BajaNomad - 2-24-2007 at 04:26 PM

In late '94 / early '95 about the only way to get information in this new fledgling (sp?) medium of the Internet in regards to Baja California was through USENET - a bulletin board "of sorts" defined by specific topic area. Baja was a topic for a number of the travel areas.

There was no website with Baja California info at the time - at least one that was in English and well-known in any sense.

There was a professor at UC Riverside, Fred Metcalf, who had something called an "FTP" site with text-files having information you could download and read - meant for travelers.

Fred's FTP site at the time was called the "Baja California Travel Information Files" and located (I believe) at:
ftp://ucrmath.ucr.edu/ftm/baja.calif/

Fred later expanded this to a website - and created the bulletin board he currently has (I've forgotten exactly when this transition took place). You can read more about how Fred came about to first post the FTP, then HTTP sites here:
http://math.ucr.edu/ftm/bajaPages/About.html

Side note: although the domain names "baja.com" & "baja.net" (etc) were already registered/reserved by others ahead of this, there was little to no original content on those sites at the time - they were awaiting what was later to come for them and the directions they've now taken.

I was active on USENET myself about this time. Very active. But with Fred's inspiration with this "website stuff" I saw that as the way to go in even answering questions for people - and if nobody else was doing this, well, then I needed just go ahead and do it myself somehow. Somewhere in there at almost the exact same time, I think the Robitaille's had a similar idea (and in the same city none-the-less, as I lived in Huntington Beach at the time). With their fishing interests, they created THE BEST place to go online for fishing information from Baja. The original site was located here beginning in 1995:
http://www.geocities.com/TheTropics/4888/

Earle announced this "new" site on USENET (rec.outdoors.fishing.saltwater) in June of '96:
http://tinyurl.com/ywursz

Somewhere along the way I was experimenting with FrontPage software from Microsoft - which included bulletin board software - and at a Fred Hall Fishing show in Long Beach one year had a discussion with Eric about it - details of this I do not remember however - but somehow recollect Eric shortly thereafter using the FrontPage software for their bulletin board.

I played with this bulletin board software myself here:
http://bb.escapist.com/baja

Frankly, I did not at all like all the work it took to maintain a bulletin board that used the FrontPage software (this new forum software is super-easy in comparison) - and I really had to hand it to Trish and Eric for all the work they put in to keep the Amigos bulletin board areas somewhat organized and available for as long as they did - and archiving them, etc.

Here's what their bulletin board looked like for much of the time it was active:
http://tinyurl.com/2e5e6v

By 2003, they had updated the look of the site, and updated to the more current forum-type software. The front of the site in 2003 appeared as such:
http://tinyurl.com/yqraw8

And the forums in 2003:
http://tinyurl.com/ynvgkd

Unfortunately, from what I know - due to a number of personal reasons - the Robitailles retired the site. Visitors were greeted with a message on the forums along these lines:
http://tinyurl.com/2fng88

..and later with a different error message until the site hosting and domain name expired.

There was a lot of work involved in getting the information they did out of Baja and regularly onto the Web - as well as maintaining such a busy site as they did... and the expense involved of doing so.

Let me tell you - the hard costs (computer processing, hard drives, RAM, bandwidth) of hosting such an active website today are MUCH LOWER than they were when the Robitailles were doing it. They gave a lot of themselves, and I certainly wish to recognize how much they gave to the community. My thank you page from 2003 doesn't nearly say enough:
http://www.bajanomad.com/bajanet

More information was written about the site - and the Amigos de Baja - by Marla Jo Fisher here:

Thanks for the trip down memory lane with the glimpse of the circa 1998 Amigos board.

My first post ever was about 3 months prior to that time period. I had just purchased my first 4WD in 22 years and was looking for Baja friends. I had signed up for a San Diego Natural History Museum trip to Tajo Canyon and had posted a question about the area.

My only response was from Neal Johns, trying to lure me to his group, Desert Explorers...

The first time any of us met in person was Feb. 2000 at Discover Baja Travel Club for a Graham Macintosh presentation. I had suggested that we meet for pizza before the talk.

Back in '03 I heard about Amigos, went there, liked it, made a post, and it did not appear.
Scratched my head for a couple days, kept checking, nada!
Same guy that told me about it said "I hear they went out of business two days ago" and sure enough, they had.
So, I have often wondered,
Was it my post that sent Amigos into never-never land?
Just wondering.
It may have been the last one sent in >>> or the first one lapsed.
Quien sabe??

Minnow - 2-26-2007 at 09:05 AM

Bajaboy Zac, and myself are the only two posters left from the original page of Amigo's, since Mike H died. I agree with hooks response. Lots of great fishing stories then, as Earl was a fisherman and took time with the fish reports. There seemed to be a much freer exchange of knowledge then. Here on nomad people log on for the first time and start posting like crazy even though they have limited baja experience. They comment on everything. Oh well things change.

DK and his crew came along and changed things a bit around 1999. David will always be a newbie to me. At the time I thought it was a good thing, and even went to a couple of their get togethers, until I realized that most of these folks were a couple of generations removed from myself and our baja interests were not really the same. Oh well!

There is still plenty of good information here, and for the record, I MISS JR! RIP buddy.

Knew and hoped that would happen!

marla - 3-1-2007 at 01:52 PM

NOW, JUST A DARN MINUTE!!!!

Hook - 3-1-2007 at 03:13 PM

I vociferously protest the whole direction this thread is taking as a complete affront to men's sexuality, worldwide!!!!

To use a man such as Neal Johns in such a cavalier fashion, clearly for prurient interests, cannot and will not be condoned by the gruffer sex!!!!! We may have our faults, but we also have our honor!!

I insist that, in the interest of fairness and egalidad, a similarly comely WOMAN be made available for a husband-in-waiting for the rest of Nomankind that has had to suffer through this, unrequitted.

And dont try and base this choice purely on physical appearance. Oh no, we men are not so shallow as to fall for that one! Your representative should have abilities in more important skills......like cleaning fish, driving back to camp at 2am on Saturday night, making bait at dawn the next day and GLADLY making beer runs at ANY hour.

I needn't mention that she should have NEVER OUTFISHED ANY MEN SHE HAS CONSORTED WITH in the past!

Ladies of the Nomads board, send forth your appointed representative, or face a thousand nights of celibacy at the hands of us menfolk.

Uh, my place in line will not be revealed until I see your offering.

Dare I ask...

zforbes - 3-1-2007 at 04:08 PM

-- with tongue in cheek -- if there are upper and lower age limits? Or is that peripheral to the above cited qualities.

The age of consent is all that is necessary.

Consent to willingly engaging in these activities, of course.......

Speak for yourself. I would nominate somebody, but I would probably get in trouble.

You mean there are some Nomad HOTTIES out there??? Do tell!

The Sculpin - 3-1-2007 at 04:44 PM

Seems to me you're looking for an aussie sheilah, mate!!!
:P

How would 'Husbands in Waiting' handle this?

David K - 3-1-2007 at 04:45 PM

It is a well known fact that females try to be #1!

Here are a pair of Neal Johns' Wives in Waiting fighting for a lower WiW number!

Thanks M and jeans for the show...

Guys would probably just compare their (fishing) poles for dominance!!

Baja Bernie - 3-1-2007 at 06:30 PM

Not being a fisherman and being hard of hearing I really don't understand your comment...............although something pleasant nags at the back of my mind.
Could you........of course not this is a family rated board.:lol::lol:

Hook - 3-1-2007 at 06:57 PM

Bernie, I think he's referring to the catfight pic above, where the women appear to be measuring each other's ears.

Still no nominations, ladies?????

I understand completely. These are uncommon skills.

Still, justice must be served.......

David K - 3-1-2007 at 07:05 PM

Thanks Hook for clearing that up... I had alway heard women measure hands on men:lol: It wasn't men's ears she was taling about!

bajalera - 3-1-2007 at 07:22 PM

Thanks for all that info, everybody! I liked the old Amigos site, was disappointed when it suddenly tanked, and always wondered what had happened.

It was a happy day when I came across the Nomad board to take its place..

Well, how 'bout if you agree to never outfish the prospective hubby in the future? Relationships are all about compromise.

I think I'm starting to get a sense of the burden that Neal has born all these years.:(

That poor man............

Paulina - 3-1-2007 at 09:21 PM

Hook,

Well, maybe if you agree to always provide with the necessary equipment, the 6 B's, one might be persuaded to pass the biggest fish off to her HIW...

Boat
Bait
Beer
Buffet
Bikini
Baja

P<*)))><

Hmmm....??

Bedman - 3-1-2007 at 09:46 PM

Did somebody say " Bikini?"

hehehehe...

LADIES>LAdies, ladies....

M - 3-3-2007 at 03:05 PM

HONESTLY! Your numeric fantasies, are just that. Fantasies. I have been holding the #A1 W.I.W title for almost 6 years AND untill that ol scarob bites the Baja dust, I will remain there UNLESS any of you gals want to climb into the 'sac' with him also.
IN ADDITION......
I humbly offer my eligability to take on a sidewing H.I.W. but there will be no guarentees that if given the opportunity, I won't outfish them.
Hugs,
M

Baja Bernie - 3-3-2007 at 07:17 PM

From all I know I will will take odds on 'M' out fishing any guy here! The other stuff I will leave alone...................But I do thank her for inviting me to a BBBB so long ago.
