recovering Kodak Easy Share photos

Phil S - 2-26-2007 at 08:46 PM

Jerry isn't the only one that thinks he's inept with computers. I just lost 55 important photos when I deleted what I thought was a duplicate file, and ended up loosing the pictures in both the files AND the original photos by date taken????? Anyone with the procedure of recovering from the recycling bin????? I've read all the help steps and found NOTHING!!! It's like they don't want you to know how to recover any of the deleted items. But this is in the Kodak Easy Share software. I think this would be a "restore" step somewhere. But I haven't a clue.
Any help is appreciated. I'm wondering if this happens to anyone else and if they were able to resolve it or not.
Thanks in advance. Phil S in Loreto/Nopolo

Phil,
I just recently deleted some inferior picutres so I clicked on the recycle bin and there were lots of Kodak files. When I double-clicked on a folder, it gave me the option to restore, which I did and the folder disappeared. However, the system would not let me look in the folders to see which picture it was, nor do I know where it was restored to.

Another thought....are you sure the pictures were removed from the camera? Unless you state that you want them removed when you transfer them to the computer, they remain in the camera.

Good luck!

jeans. The photos in the "camera" as I know it are erased after I transfer the disk to the laptop. I'll give Hose A's suggestion a look & see.
Thanks to you both.

Hose A. Tried that of the "tools" and the recover pic's and it required a file name, and since it went to recycle bin, that step didn't help me. But thanks for the suggestion.
Software geniuses out there. Got any suggestions? I've heard that recovering anything from recycle bin is most difficult even if it isn't in the'Easy Share software.

Thanks

Click on the "recycle bin" on the desktop. Once it is open you will see all the files you have “deleted”. Highlight the photos you want, right-click with the mouse on those highlighted photos, a pop-up will appear and one option is “Restore”. Left click with the mouse on “restore” and they will go back to their original folder on the computer.

If the photos are not in the recycle bin…your chances of getting them back are slim. The location where they were on the hard drive may have been written over by other data. Sometimes when a program deletes files the file is deleted without going to the recycle bin, hopefully that did not happen with you.

Have you tried restoring your computer to a date before you deleted theses pictures?

Sigh of relief..other users on board

When I loaded my easyshare software, my computer went berserk so I promptly removed easyshare. I take it that none of you have had trouble loading it? I need to try loading it again.

Kodak Easy Share has the photos on their server on line, nor on your desktop so they can't end up in your Recycle Bin on your computer. Just tried online and see nothing about un-deleting.

But you uploaded them from your computer I suppose, so their should be some copy hidden away unless you deleted them from the computer after uploading.

My IT guy say's (emphatically) "DO NOT LOAD KODAK SOFTWARE! IF YOU HAVE, UNINSTALL IT. Seems it can screw up other programs and has a lot of bugs.

Another Vote against Kodak

Last year, I worked on a neighbor's laptop (WXP) who was having ongoing problems using the Kodak Software that came with her Kodak camera. After struggling with it for awhile, I advised her to dump it and use some other Photo Program such as Paint Shop Pro. Since buying a Pentax Digital camera, I came to like the ACDSee program that came with the Pentax. It seems to do everything well, including resizing which sometimes gets ragged with PSP.

Rather than let the photos default into the Kodak software when downloading, I create a folder under Docs/Pics and copy/move the files there.

I've had the Kodak software and years it for years without problems. I never delete the uploaded photos from my hard drive though.

Just to clarify my post about using Kodak, that was for uploads and online storage only. I don't use any camera manufacturers software for getting them from the camera or manipulating in my computer.

Unless you emptied the Recycle Bin since this occured, whatever items that got deleted should still be in there. To view the contents of the Bin, do the following:

1. Locate the Recycle Bin icon on your desktop.
2. RIGHT-click on the icon.
3. Select "EXPLORE"

A window will open showing you all the items in the recycle bin. Look through it carefully for the folder(s) that got deleted. To restore them to their original location (most likely the "My Pictures folder):

1.RIGHT click on the file/folder you wish to restore.
2.Select "RESTORE".

You can also view the properties of each file in there by RIGHT clicking and then selecting PROPERTIES. This will give list the type of file, it's original location, when it was created, and when it was deleted. That will help you also.

Hope this is of help. By default, deleted items go to the Recycle Bin where they are "held" until you empty it. Just in case.

My wife takes a lot of photos (7 gig. a year) and is very happy with her Kodak camera. The first time I downloaded the Kodak program it assumed control of all our pictures. I erased the program and keep the pictures on a hard drive where I can work with when I want. We download the disk on a card reader/writer. Photo shop wants to control the pictures but I can bypass that program when needed.

The Hazy Fog of Time

MrBillM - 2-27-2007 at 12:31 PM

As I think about my experience with the Kodak software, I remember that the "Album" created by the software with each download is not where the photos are actually stored so that, when you delete from that album, you're only affecting the album's compostion and not actually removing the photo. Therefore, it would not be in the recycle bin. Or so I remember.

Take the name of one of the photos you can't locate and use the "find" on the start menu to look for the location of that file name.

Phil,

Have you tried doing a SEARCH for ALL photos. Windows XP lets you hunt for ALL photos by simply clicking a box under Search. First time I ever tried that, I was amazed at all the pics it found. It found some I had forgotten about and some which I didn't know were stored on my hard drive.

Phil S - 2-28-2007 at 04:32 PM

AMoPescar. Thanks. For a minute I thought I was thrown out of the "loop".
I'll try this suggestion. If it works out, I'll get back with the results.

Really easy. Never knew one could do that.

THANX!:o

Phil S - 3-1-2007 at 10:31 AM

AmoPescar. I tried the search. Didn't bring up the folder where they "used to be"?????? I'm going to try the recycle bin search again. There are tons of thrown away pics, and since I don't label my photos when they end up in the general file folder, or the "date" folder and with 2,100+ photo's this will be a time consuming feat. But what the heck. Six months in Loreto/Nopolo, and nothing else to do, it can be done.
Thanks to all who responded. Guess the one who has "been there, done that" hasn't read the plea for help yet!!!!!!

Taco de Baja - 3-1-2007 at 10:36 AM

You can also do a search by "date created" or "date modified"
And you can enter a range too; say 1/01/2007 to 2/14/2007....It's in the "Advanced Search" option of the search function.

Recycle bin...

bahiamia - 3-1-2007 at 10:41 AM

When exploring the contents of the Recycle Bin, you can change the View to show the date each file/folder was deleted. This will help narrow it down if you know approx the date when the files were deleted. Click VIEW, then select DETAILS:

By clicking DATE DELETED you can arrange the files in ascending or descending order.
