El Taco de Huitzilopochtli: Nomad get together 3/11/07

Minnow - 2-27-2007 at 03:24 PM

I and a few other nomads will be dining at
El Taco de Huitzilopochtli

Sunday March 11 , 2007 from 2 till closing.

I would like to see as many of you as can make it to this gem of a dining establishment. You will not regret it. This is the place made famous by David Edell on Amigo's de Baja.

We can't wait to see you all there.

Here is a link to a thread years ago from David K, and a nice picture.

http://forums.bajanomad.com/viewthread.php?tid=11708#pid9294...

Like he says in the caption. A truly awesome experience. I hope to see you all there.

DENNIS - 2-27-2007 at 04:05 PM

I will be there. This will be a great opportunity for all of us in the area to get to know each other.
Hose A, Sylens, BB and Vince, Bigboy, Bigmike, Rich'nLinda, Iflyfish, Bajaguy, Fred who had the best bar at the Buf, and I just ran out of memory.

This could be fun. Let's do it.

David K - 2-27-2007 at 04:07 PM

From my Baja GPS web page (waypoint is at Map Datum NAD27 Mexico): El Taco de Huitzilipotchtli restaurant: 31°53.10'/ 116°36.28'

Unique dining... food prepared like in Oaxaca, Pueblo, and Aztec kitchens! Finish your meal with their awesome flan and a glass of Pulque/ Mezcal

DENNIS - 2-27-2007 at 04:10 PM

Hey David ---

Why dont you join us?

DENNIS - 2-27-2007 at 04:20 PM

You too Bernie........ and Dave

My memory is piecieng itself together.

David K - 2-27-2007 at 04:25 PM

I am not going south for the race, which is in Ensenada that weekend, and I already have a dinner planned with my Norwegian (Viking) Fish Club the 10th... If not for that, I would love to be there...

I have told Baja Angel about the place and I highly recommend any Nomad in the mood for a unique and inexpensive dining experience to join you guys!

The photo shown in the link above was taken in 2001 when I went there with Fishin' Rich, elgatoloco & BajaBarb, and David Eidell... here's more from that day: http://vivabaja.com/cabras/page3.html

fdt - 2-27-2007 at 04:32 PM

I'll be there just for eating 2 to close :wow:

DENNIS - 2-27-2007 at 04:48 PM

Hey Minnow ---

This is our party.... Take over on the organization.

Paulina - 2-27-2007 at 05:23 PM

Dennis,
Sounds like you've got the liar's club moving in on the taco joint! I didn't know you old farts could stay up that late!

P<*)))><

DENNIS - 2-27-2007 at 06:33 PM

Paulina ---

Well, ya know, we're all kids before sun-set.

Oh gosh, it's getting dark. I'd better get in my coffin.

Bajafun777 - 2-27-2007 at 07:37 PM

I would like to meet up with you Nomads and tip, oh I mean drink a few with you. The food will just be the thing to do in between drinking, right?? If I can find a hotel that still has some rooms left for sure I will link up. I have been wanting to ride my motorcycle down from Tecate to Ensenada, so this just might be my excuse to do so. I have stayed at a number of hotels in Ensenada over the years. Now,the only thing that has really changed with Ensenada is me as I seem to have gotten older in appearance than some of the hotels I have stayed in:lol:. Last year I stayed with a few of my friends and son in the San Nicolas hotel down. We just went down to get some fish and back out. I hear that the Mision Santa Isabel is also good but cost more. What hotels are by this El Taco de Huitzilopochtli?? bajafun777

DENNIS - 2-27-2007 at 07:44 PM

B- 777

No accomodations in that corner of town.
Minnow should be getting back with us soon on his fine invitation. It seems to have stirred lots of interest.

Minnow - 2-28-2007 at 09:50 AM

El Taco de Huitzilopochtli is only open from 10 till 4 or 5 on Sundays. I believe they do rent the place out for parties on Saturdays. It is only open Saturdays and Sundays.

The food is authentic Aztec hence the name. It is far from a taco stand. They slow cook Barbacoa, and Birria for days in advance. They have all sorts of native squashes and other vegies made into things that the average person never gets to try. All of it is delicious.

Dennis, I think this is all the organization we need. All Nomads and guests feel free to stop by and say hi, get there early though or my wife might have eaten all the food.

Saludos

El Taco de Huitzilopochtli is located in the Valle Verde district of Ensenada, the far north east corner. This is a Segundo area, so after we eat we can walk off the food by checking out the Second hand stores. Lots of interesting finds there.

I will post directions later.

we'll be there

sylens - 2-28-2007 at 11:35 AM

looking forward to meeting everybody. hope there will be room!!:bounce:

bajaguy - 2-28-2007 at 02:43 PM

OK, gonna try........I need directions with landmarks , as I am geographically challenged

[Edited on 2-28-2007 by bajaguy]

bigboy - 2-28-2007 at 05:15 PM

Wish I could make it but I have family obligations for that weekend. I've never been there but I plan on eating there very soon.

Minnow - 2-28-2007 at 09:52 PM

Directions;

Reforma/ Mex 1 (they are the same) North to Ambar...There will be a new AM/Pm on the far right corner

Take a right onto Ambar to the end. This is Paseo de Valle Verde

Left on Valle Verde two blocks then take another left on Rosa.

It is just down on the left hand side.

Here is a link to a good map of ensenada.

elgatoloco - 2-28-2007 at 11:43 PM

When you are scraping the tender leaves of the Huauzontles off the stem, think of me.

I am sorry to miss out on the fine food and festivities!

Have a shot or two of the 'house' mezcal for me as well.

It is great 'for the digestion'.

David K - 3-1-2007 at 01:22 AM

Tom, are your directions for northbound (Punta Banda) Nomads?

If entering Ensenada southbound (from the north), use the inland route where Hwy. 1 splits.

Correct me, but I recall making a left (east) turn at the first Pemex station after the highway becomes a city street... then taking that street or whatever it merges into to keep heading east all the way across town to the far east side... to a T intersection (at the base of a hill), turn left (north) and go about three blocks (?)... the restaurant is on a left (west) side street, on the left (south) side, midblock.

I really would enjoy the taste treat... You guys have fun! See if my Viva Baja sticker is still on the fridge!

bajaguy - 3-1-2007 at 08:43 PM

Minnow Instuctor: Free self medicating seminars.

Iflyfish - 3-7-2007 at 08:53 AM

Great map Minnow. I look forward to meeting you too.

I am sorry, but I am having a hard time figuring out where this is. We are loving Ensenada, however I find that driving our 24' motor home in this town can be challenging.

Life is good in Ensenada. Ask me over dinner about the lady from Oregon who settled in Ensenada, saw our Oregon plate and started talking with me about The Vagina Dialogues, a play she was in this last week end in Ensenada. That dialogue was a hoot!

We are at Estero, would someone please send me u2u directions from Estero.

Hate to be so map challenged, but it is what it is and we are where we are. This place looks wonderful.

I look forward to putting faces with posts.

Corn fungus and Bierria sound like great self medication to me!

Thanks for putting this together,

Iflyfish and Msfish

Minnow - 3-7-2007 at 09:11 AM

Can anyone coming from the south give Mr. and Mrs. Fly a ride? It might be a little tough for them to park their Moho on those narrow streets.:light:

David K - 3-7-2007 at 10:29 AM

Here is the overall area. The three streets Minnow named are circled on the map... El Taco de H. is the dot at the end of the arrow, on Rosas.

Minnow - 3-7-2007 at 07:41 PM

Bajaguy, we need to get a hold of Lizard Lips. Any word if he is in Ensenada? I will try and reach him tomorrow.

Lizard Lips

bajaguy - 3-7-2007 at 07:48 PM

He is out of town, will return on Saturday. I already e-mailed him. Also sent a u2u to IflyFish (when I'm not drinking Pacifico) but have not heard from him. I am leaving to drive south either late tomorrow (Thursday) nite or early Friday morning. Also e-mailed Bajabound 2005 and Doc (Dockery)

Mr and Mrs Fish: It's Vagina MONOLOGUES not dialogues and why weren't you there since Barb (who I think is who you met!) invited you!? It was a riot!!!! You missed the opportunity of a lifetime!

Iflyfish - 3-8-2007 at 01:17 AM

I did indeed meet Barb, what a hoot. Lovely lady, had me laughing my can off. I did miss the show, however, our discussion will live in my memory forever.

You are right about the Vagina Monologues, the only ones I have ever had have been dialogues. I have enjoyed them all.

I too am sorry that I missed that great play. Just couldn't make it. I was surprised to see such a sophisiticated play was being produced in Ensenada. I hope it was well attended.

I hope you and Barb can make it to the fete on Sunday, I enjoyed talking with her and look forward to meeting you.

Iflyfish - 3-8-2007 at 11:17 AM

We just got the news that we need to head north tomorrow for Oregon.

We will miss the tacos, beer and Nomads on Sunday. I am certain all will have a good time.

Our trip to the Baja has been an amazing and wonderful experience, it is hard to leave.

Abrazos Forte to those we have met and avia bien to all.

Lindalou - 3-13-2007 at 03:18 AM

Tell us about the turnout the food and everything else that went on!:yes:

Minnow - 3-13-2007 at 06:26 AM

We all agreed that what happens at El Taco de Huitzilopochtli, stays at El Taco de Huitzilopochtli.

Suffice it to say a great time was had by all. It was like a group of old friends getting together.

Dia de Reyes toy drive , Jan 06 2008, Buy your toys early and save.

Minnow - 3-13-2007 at 08:35 AM

Hey fdt. Great cause. Where can we drop them off during the year. Pyramid? Keri? Do they have to be brand new or is gently used OK?

Bajafun777 - 3-13-2007 at 10:54 AM

I really wanted to get down there for my first visit at the El Taco de Huitzilopochtli but could not find a hotel room due to the race down there. I am booking early for the Book Signing and not waiting for possible no room thing again. I did not want to have fun and then have to drive off to somewhere else, as we all know drinking and driving just does not mix. Later and I look forward to the May Book Signing should be interesting and I am really enjoying meeting other Nomads out there. Bajafun777

Hey, Minnow...I was looking forward to the details...at least say more about the food - you know, like who ate the most and which dish(es) were the best. Anything else you care to add, like who laughed the longest over which shenanigans, will be kept in strictest confidence. Zoe

Thanks, Don't have drop off points yetfor the bnext toy drive but as soon as I do I wil post it here. As for used toys, that is perfectly ok, we gave away a few good used ones this past toy drive, specialy used bikes, just make sure they are safe.
