Whale Watching in Late March or Early April

kitjv - 3-1-2007 at 07:24 PM

First a THANK YOU for everyone for the helpful responses to my various queries over the past couple of months. It's been about 30 years since my last trip to Baja. So, our month-long motorcycle trip scheduled for later this month will be a "reunion" for me.

Question: Any personal recommendations on whale watching during the last week of March & the first half of April? We'd prefer to be on a panga rather than a larger tour boat.

As usual....THANK YOU!

With some luck that part of the year can produce many "friendly" encounters. Most of the males have left the lagoons and the female/calf pairs that are still around are often very curious. Try Laguna San Ignacio, more remote and difficult to get to than the other two major lagoons (Ojo de Liebre and Magdalena Bay), but worth it IMHO, and no "tour boats".

So when, exactly, are the dates that the Scammons road is open for the "season"?
Shari - do you know?
PS: all the boats that go out are pangas

Ojo de Liebre (Scammons lagoon) is open from Dec.15-May 15 BUT by the last week of March there are few whales and the viewing is not very good, you will see whales but all the ones who resided in the lagoon all year and became pals with the panga drivers will have headed north by then. San Ignacio and Mag Bay are much better places this time of year. There is a constant parade passing our house every day all day...the last week we have seen so many breaching whales just in front of our patio...usually at happy hour! Lots of cheering and WOWing.
