International Women's Day

zforbes - 3-5-2007 at 03:02 PM

March 8 is International Women's Day, and I wonder if this is commemorated in Baja. Zoe

Zoe
I will keep my eyes and ears open but will be very surprised if anything is done here.

It is at my house.

fdt - 3-6-2007 at 09:17 AM

Yes, very popular all over México, 8 de Marzo Dia Internacional de la Mujer, schools always have something going on, also in the streets you see a mujer and you say felicidades.

bajajudy - 3-6-2007 at 09:46 AM

Thanks, fdt
I will look for that.
I am glad to hear that we are celebrated here too!

It's the V word = Viejas

Viejas?

zforbes - 3-6-2007 at 01:14 PM

The old ladies? That would be me, but uh...what about the young ones like Shari? I am missing something here. Can you say more about viejas, fdt?

bajajudy - 3-6-2007 at 03:54 PM

Zoe
I believe that viejas is the equivalent of "old lady" as in biker's old lady. Not politically correct in the US(thin skinned people that they have become) but not derogatory here, I dont believe. FDT, am I correct?

It all becomes clear...

zforbes - 3-6-2007 at 04:28 PM

someone's old lady...yup, I get it.

Those girls that work for Mercury Insurance must feel slighted.

Love your signature and my flower would be the California Poppy because it waits out the tough weather and blooms in the winds...........My wife and I cast seeds in our back yard every year and love to see them bending to the wind of the vehicles passing them on the freeways.........Somehow they reminds me of the lady's in my life............resilient, strong, smiling, caring, and some other stuff.

Oh! us men are blessed enough so that we don't need an International day.

I rather doubt that a Nomad needs to question how we are blessed.

bajabound2005 - 3-6-2007 at 09:20 PM

Well, the kids in Punta Banda have the day off from school for some reason...we were told it's a holiday (we teach English on Thursdays in the primary school). Sorry, but it doesn't seem like a viable reason for schools to close! They sure have a lot of holidays when it comes to schooling

LaRibereña - 3-7-2007 at 07:18 AM

This Saturday in our little town of La Ribera, there will be a big party at the concha for all the women of town. Food, music and lots of dancing (all gratis, of course). We will crown a queen (usually an honored older woman of the town). The local dignitaries will come and open the party with short speeches and then leave the party to the women. There are free raffle tickets for all for some grand prizes; refrigerators, washing machines, coffee makers, etc., etc. Quite a day. Yes, it is an important day in Mexico.

No offense meant, we call our mom "Mi jefa". Dads are often Mi Jefe, kids Mis Morros, wife Mi Vieja.:saint:
