Story of this Cardon???

This cardon on the road from Hwy 1 to the San Borja mission must be about 30 feet tall. The picture was taken quickly while still in the truck, but on top of the cardon there is what looks like a metal tag of some type.

Can't imagine anyone climbing a cardon, and they don't grow very fast. So does anyone know the story behind this cactus?

Maybe it was tagged when it was much shorter. Maybe it was the guy who wrote the Plant Guide for Baja. I don't have the book with me. But it's the one whose wife is standing in front of that 60 footer.

Don't think the tag would grow with the cactus...Norman's cactus was I think 86 feet high so this probably wasn't the one.

In 11 years, the cordons in my yard have grown less than a foot, and they are small ones - larger grow slower, I'm told.

I am not a botanist, but I think that if the object had been implanted many years ago there would have been no further upward growth on that arm of the cactus.
Growth is simply that- it grows, it does not lift something that is attached.
It probably would have branched out at that point and formed a 'Y' and the item would still be at close to ground zero...
just my uneducated observation.

(there was a great Far Side cartoon years ago of a swing hanging from a limb about 25 feet in the air, and the couple looking up were being wistful about how it was the swing they used when they were little.... not very scientific, but certainly funny... same theory applies here)

Conclusion, I think that the ancient Aztecs were involved...

My guess is that the guys who ran that fiberoptic cable all the way south a few years ago were having a little fun on break time with their high-lift bucket and stuck a broken piece of telcom gear in the top of that poor cactus. I know that's not very fanciful of me, but it sounds plausible in my little mind.

A plausible answer, except this cardon is several miles in from Hwy 1 on the road to San Borja---middle of nowhere.

I've got an explanation.

Remember Carlos Castenada's Don Juan? Come on you children of the 60's?................

It was Don Juan jumping from rock to rock planting the pole in the top of the cactus for fun.
