Mexican Beer!

chino - 3-10-2007 at 09:03 PM

Is it just me or is Mexican beer great?
I spent 2 weeks in July on a small sailboat in the Midriff Islands without ice or a refer., we got back to Bahia de Kino and stumbled upon some refridgerated Mexican beer and it was pure bliss. Now I'm hooked and wont settle for less. Now dont' get me wrong, cuz' I hate Budweiser, but what would have happened if the first cold beer off of the boat that fateful day would have been Bud??!!
PS Isn't Bud import beer in Mexico???
Help me!,

BirdDog - 3-10-2007 at 10:02 PM

Probably would have had a bad case of the beer s**ts.

David K - 3-11-2007 at 10:19 AM

Yes it is... designed by German brewmasters!

Favorites include: Pacifico, XX (Dos Equis), Mexicali, Tijuana, Tecate (in Baja, not the import here in U.S.), Bohemia, Carta Blanca, Modelo, Sol... Most of them EXCEPT Corona.

[Edited on 3-11-2007 by David K]

To add to David's list--------NEGRA MODELO!!!

Negra Modelo---two votes---tis the best!

Mexitron - 3-11-2007 at 10:40 AM

I'll add the Corona in the deposito bottles...much better than the imported stuff in the US. There also used to be "Corona de Barrile" but I haven't seen that in years.

Halboo - 3-11-2007 at 10:47 AM

Many years ago I was on a surfari in the pacific mainland and to this day I still remember how much I liked the taste of

I haven't had it since and they don't export it.:(

----I cannot quite make out what the beer is in the pic------what is the name????

Oso - 3-11-2007 at 11:23 AM

That's Victoria, traditionally the cheapest beer in Mexico. I can remember drinking it at 50 centavos ea. when that was 4 cents USDL. Not usually thought of as equal to those others, but STILL better than Bud. Here along the border, the favorite of many, if not most Mexicans is Bud Light (& yes, in Mexico it's "imported") Go figure :?:

Barry A. - 3-11-2007 at 11:37 AM

Thanks, Oso.

My first ever taste of multi-beers was at San Carlos Bay, Sonora, in 1954 (I was 15) when there was zero development or habitation there. We walked down the beach from our camp and found a bunch of very young Mexican vaqueros having a celebration, and they sold us CARTA BLANCA for .19 cents USD-------that is still a vivid memory, and boy did we have a great time with those guys that day. I have loved CARTA BLANCA ever since (but there are better beers, like you say)

Those vaqueros were so great----------every day we were there in camp (14 days) they came over early in the morning to our camp and staked out saddled horses for our use for the day. They would come by in the evening to pick them up-----never asked for, or would they accept, and payment. None could speak a word of English, as I remember.

Fantastic people!!!

Halboo - 3-11-2007 at 12:09 PM

Now that I think of it, it wasn't Victoria; it was Indio that I remembered .
Anybody else had it?

I can't get over how many Mexicans drink Bud!
Even clear bottle corona's better then Bud.
It must be the foxy Latina Bud Girls.

I really liked those "En Barril" bottles with the opener in the bottom. No need for a church key!

bancoduo - 3-11-2007 at 01:05 PM

The new micro-brewed Mexicali tastes nothing like the original, which was my favorite beer.

Barry A. - 3-11-2007 at 01:25 PM

That's funny-----------my friends and I always referred to the original "MEXICALI BEER" as "pure panther p--s"---------makes me shutter to even think about it.

But then I love CORONA, so that tells you something about MY taste in beer. :tumble:

bancoduo - 3-11-2007 at 01:30 PM

Where can I buy a bottle of "pure panther p--s"?:O

vandenberg - 3-11-2007 at 01:32 PM

On a trip to Guadalajara a few years ago, I found Dos Equis amber, a really great dark colored beer. Asked for it here in Baja, but never have been able to find it. Anybody familiar with that particular beer ?

Barry A. - 3-11-2007 at 01:36 PM

Banco-----

I will check amongst the cobwebs in my garage-------maybe, just maybe, there is one lurking????

bancoduo - 3-11-2007 at 01:59 PM

"CORONA" sold in the US smells like swamp water.

That doesn't mean I wouldn't take one if offered. So much for TASTE.

[Edited on 3-11-2007 by bancoduo]

Barry A. - 3-11-2007 at 02:16 PM

MEXICAN Corona, not "imported" Corona------I NEVER drink imported Corona. Yuck!!!!

I looked, but no MEXICALI'S------I did find a couple of dusty "CHIHUAHUA" beers tho, but there were strange things floating around inside them????? Is this good???

:?:

bancoduo - 3-11-2007 at 02:23 PM

Ya got any 40yr old tequila hidden in the cobwebs? Could be worth something.

Oso - 3-11-2007 at 02:44 PM

The ORIGINAL Dos Equis was amber, the green bottles came later. Way back when Dos Equis was one of the very first quality Mexican beers to be imported, a well-known (except I forget who) food critic described the flavor as "Delightful as the laughter of a maiden being chased by her lover on a warm summer night."

As much as I love good Mexican, German and well, good imported beer period, I have found few to equal a home-grown SoCal microbrew: Arrogant Bastard Ale.

Bob and Susan - 3-11-2007 at 02:56 PM

i JUST had a conversation with my builder...

americans like me perfer pacifico but ALL the local mexican guys here like tecate

i should ONLY buy tecate for the boys!!!:P

YOU LEFT OUT NEGRA MODELO, DK?

Well my wife actually thinks I'm white trash for liking Tecate in the cans, but I just cant' help it, that and considering that she's a Chicana and doesn't even drink beer, let alone Mexican beer I think I'll be OK

Bob and Susan - 3-11-2007 at 04:17 PM

doesn't drinking beer out of cans cause cancer???

Paulina - 3-11-2007 at 04:45 PM

I loved those bottles with the built in openers in the bottom. In San Felipe in 1980, if we bought a case of them the market would give us a free barril glass. We wanted a set of six so beers flowed on that weekend trip. I still have a few glasses left.

Bud. :O my only comment... I call it Buttwiper. At least that's what it tastes like to me.

Dern was smart. He left for the Score 250, leaving his Buttwipers in the fridge, knowing they would be there when he got back. Couldn't say the same if he left TKT, the flower of Baja.

Tecate - Good German Beer

MrBillM - 3-11-2007 at 05:11 PM

I have a German Friend whose favorite Mex Beer is Tecate and he points out that it has to be the greatest because the Tecate Brewery was founded by a German Brewmeister who immigrated to Mexico.

Not my favorite, though.

Bob & Susan-----

Barry A. - 3-11-2007 at 05:15 PM

Negra Modelo IS THE BEST, and occasionally you can get a "deal" on a case at TRADER JOE'S.

Yes, it's good!!!!

Yep! Carta Blanca. I figured any beer company that was considerate enough to open my beer for me had my vote.

Now I pretty much stick with Pacificos. Never cared for Corona. It always smelled like skunk water to me. I figure if you have to add lime to make it drinkable is really isn't worth drinking.

David K - 3-11-2007 at 09:24 PM

I have not been a fan of most dark beer since I drank way too much Negra Modelo in 1979 the night before I was in the Baja 1000!

You see Negra Modelo was the official sponsor of the '79 1000, so like good SCORE racers, we drank it, and drank more, and more... This was at the Bahia Hotel... race headquarters then.

Anyway, after we got back to Ensenada from racing (and breaking down) all the Negra Modelo came out... from the same portal it got in!

Anyway, not much dark beer ever since!

The Tijuana dark beer is excellent, however!

MY MEXICAN BEER FAVORITES...and some information for lovers of good Beer...

When in Baja, I always drink PACIFICO. A really COLD one goes down so fast sometimes!!!

When I'm looking for something with more taste, DOS EQUIS AMBER is one of my favorites, especially when you drInk it from a frosty beer glass. Really great with good Mexican food!!

NEGRO MODELO is certainly a good beer too! and again best from a cold glass!!

AND...I agree with Oso... ARROGANT BASTARD ALE is a fantastic beer!!! It's brewed by STONE BREWING here in San Diego County. They're a smaller brewery that has enjoyed great success and are growing larger. Their beers have won many medals at beer festivals. They recently moved into a new brewery which they built in Escondido. They have a retail store and restaurant on site as well. Stone Beers are being distributed in many states across the U.S. now. Another of my favorites fron them is their STONE PALE ALE.

If your heading south on I-5 on your way to Baja and can find the time for a couple of beers, there's another GREAT Micro Brewery here in Carlsbad. It's called Port Brewing and their beers are brewed and served at their PIZZA PORT restaurant on Carlsbad Village Drive, about 1/2 mile from the freeway. Their Beers have also won many Gold and Silver medals in national beer festivals. Their Pizza is good too!

Hoisting a cold one to you...:tumble:  :wow:

woody with a view - 3-12-2007 at 05:46 AM

not to digress, but!

ballast point makes a great line of microo's also. yellowtail pale ale being my alltime favorite beer!!! they have there brewery at the foot of USD near the police station on linda vista road.

osoflojo - 3-12-2007 at 07:36 AM

BajaVida, Superior is still made but not widely distributed. Also an excellent brew...............

Packoderm - 3-12-2007 at 08:09 AM

After so many years of seeing signs advertising Superior beer on bars in Mexico, I finally tried some last winter. I was surprised how good it was.

Oso - 3-12-2007 at 08:18 AM

Where is Baja Spellchecker?

It's Negra Modelo and Nochebuena (one word)

Possibly the only brewery in Mexico founded by Germans that kept a German name is Kloster's in Monterrey. I've never seen it in cans or bottles. It was available on draft in Mexico City, Monterrey and other cities in Eastern and Central Mexico.

BTW, I sure wish some adventurous braumeister with a few bucks would come and reopen the Monarch's Rest brewpub on Main St. in Yuma. A Brit named Ian built and opened it a few years ago but went belly up. Such a pity. He had great wheat beer and a mean Scottish style stout he called Kilt Tilter. It's been sitting there empty, all the vat's etc. ready to go again, waiting for the right investor...

movinguy - 3-12-2007 at 09:05 AM

Four Peaks Brewing in Tempe has "Kilt Lifter" Scottish ale - killer stuff. And lots of cute AZ State girls - but I digress . . . ;D

bajalera - 3-12-2007 at 09:47 AM

Is Bohemia still around? I liked that one.

If beers were judged by their commercials, the top spot would have to go to Corona--beautiful beaches, no talk, waves swishing in, ambience that says "Mexico" [ except, of course, that there's no too-loud music]. Too bad the brew doesn't measure up to the ads.

Cypress - 3-12-2007 at 10:00 AM

bajalera, Bohemia is still around..:bounce:

No Respect.

MrBillM - 3-12-2007 at 10:03 AM

Poor Corona Extra. Nobody likes it. I guess they'll just have to settle for being the biggest seller. You have to wonder why a beer that's so unappreciated sells so well.

This is another chance for the Elitists to show how much more perceptive they are. Their taste is SO much better than the commoners.

The best beer is the one that "You" like. There have been periods in my life when my favorite was Budweiser, Coors and Heineken. Right now it's MGD in El Norte and Corona Extra in Baja, but I haven't found a Mex Beer I Wouldn't drink.

I think the BEST Beer I ever tasted (from Anywhere) was Dortmunder Union.

Packoderm - 3-12-2007 at 11:22 AM

Not sure of the status right now but I'll look into it. I know Ian had a development loan from the City before he filed for bankruptcy. I guess the numbers didn't work before but with the new Pivot Point Riverfront development and remake of Main St., things could pick up in the near future.

Kilt Tilter is available at Pike's Brewing Co in Seattle

Get it fresh...

Mexray - 3-12-2007 at 09:14 PM

...Most brews don't age well...There's really nothing like the taste of new batch of your favorite micro brew...

... Or perhaps the wonderful liquid that's sold at the take-out window of the Pacifico Brewery in Mazatlan! If you're ever in Mazatlan, get over there and pick up a fresh-brewed case...toss a few well-worn bottles in a five gallon bucket of ice, let the ice do it's job...uncap a long-neck and ENJOY the feeling as that icy elixir trickles down your parched throat on a moisture laden evening as you watch the sun drop from view!

...could be argued it's better than sex, and lasts longer, too!:O

bajalera - 3-12-2007 at 11:52 PM

Why Corona sells well?

Thought I made that clear: those super commercials. That goes for Bud too.

Oso - 3-13-2007 at 07:14 AM

From the movie "Beer" with the McKenzie Bros:

Brewery owner: "You know vot makes a grrreat bier?"

McKenzies: "The hops?" "The best barley?"

Owner: "Nein, nein. Iss all chust pee-colored vater. Marketink! Marketink, dot's vot makes a grrreat bier!"

David K - 3-13-2007 at 07:16 AM

Oso, "Strange Brew", eh?

But....................

MrBillM - 3-13-2007 at 09:38 AM

While there is no doubt that Good Marketing will result in a higher rate of Initial sales, it would seem unlikely that a disappointed customer would Continue to purchase a product when so many others are available.

Perhaps my mind isn't aged or simplistic enough to grasp the concept.

Update on Monarch's Rest... It is now owned by the Quechan (They have a casino across the river). They have not as yet announced plans to reopen, maybe they are looking for a brewmaster. It is also said that Chretine's is negotiating to buy it as their present location sucks almost as much as their food. For non-Yumans, Chretine's has the absolute worst so-called "Mexican Food" West of the Mississippi. This would be tantamount to a sacrilege. Even worse if someone pulled out the brewery equipment for a "regular" restaurant.

Convenience Store Beer

MrBillM - 3-13-2007 at 05:29 PM

You've got me there. I probably haven't bought a six-pack of beer in a convenience store in the last Ten Years and rarely before that. The outrageous price they charged really peeed me off.

Nowadays, I'm usually only in the U.S. for a week or so each month so an 18-pack of MGD from Vons lasts for months

Now, of course, I'll look the next time I'm at the 7-11.

I congratulate you on your apparent lack of need for a beer NOW!

The working man's summer end of day ritual here in 115 degree Yuma is to pick up a six of "Boodlait" and a small can of Clamato at the convenience store, pour the first one over one's head, take a deep slug of the second, then add clamato for a "Border Mary".

beercan - 3-13-2007 at 07:16 PM

Although it's not the worst that we have tried, it ranks up there !!

We were in Laughlin a couple months ago and needed to get outa the Casino. A ride into "Bullhead City" was our downfall.

We stopped at a nice looking Mexican Rest. and almost died getting outa there. Another one at the top of imitation Mexican food chain .

Oso...I've never been able to get into...

Mexray - 3-13-2007 at 07:58 PM

...that 'Clamato' thing! Why screw up some perfectly good tomato juice with some bivalves that belong in a good chowder?

I enjoy all three ingredients, but not together - YUK! Beer isn't beer when you start 'cutting' it with other nefarious ingredients!

Keep it pure out there!

BTW, how's things in Yuma these days? We've got some Oregon Amigos, Rick & Leslie, that have a place out 95, around the 'bend' where it turns to the north...Rick pumps septic tanks while they winter there, to keep busy...they also have a palapa next to us down at Naranjos on Concepción - good people.

When it's the City doing it? Apparently a really long time. The first block, where the movie theater and Monarch's Rest are, is finished. But the next one, in front of Lute's & up to the fountain, not quite. It's "almost" done. Maybe next month. Yuma is expanding exponentially, claims to be fastest growing area in the nation.

I agree about not adding anything to GOOD beer. But with "Butt Wipe" I don't think it matters WHAT you put in it. I sometimes put lemon juice and salt on the rim of a TKT can. This started when they were the first Mex beer in cans- steel cans. It helped kill the metallic taste. I never put a slice of lime or lemon in the neck of a beer bottle. Filthy habit. I always look first before chugging a Mexican bottled beer. Got one once with a nice moldy blue slice of lemon peel inside.:barf:

Cypress - 3-14-2007 at 02:29 PM

Mango - 3-14-2007 at 06:50 PM

I love Pacifico and drink it up north a lot; but, tend to drink Tecate more often than not when down south and often at home. I reluctanly tried a Tecate Light (when there was no other choice) and was pleasantly surprized.

My opinions/memories.

Best (crafted) beer in Mexico is Negra Modelo - is a great beer; but, a little dark and heavy for more than one or two.

Best beer memory in Mexcio: Drinking Carta Blancas while standing on the rear platform of the train from Puebla to Oaxaca. It was a 10 hour ride with spectacular scenery. I was the only gringo on the train, great trip, great trackside food, and great locals. (Train was shut down for good only months later.)

Cheapest beer bought in Mexico: Pacifico in Mazatlan for 3 pesos each(1996). Great little place across the beach, next to my cheapie hotel, near the bus station.
